I'm the same age that Maggie claimed to be in Bob Dylan's Maggies' Farm. (Maggie was actually '68'. )

Well i turn 70 monday. I oringinally saw leonard on Austin city limits on PBS i was facinated.
I rememered that his song Suzanne was recorded by Noel Harrrison who was on a tv show called "Girl from Uncle" back in the late 60s
I just go crazy with the lyrics. Can't help but try to rewrite when i listen and follow the written ones to fit my mood.
Some of the references are not clear to me
like Boogie Street and White man dancing. I usually think ther is some deep secret meaning here. Perhaps it's the time (year) when they were writen and what was "cool" at that time.
(sorta like some of Bob Dillons work) Would enjoy any comments.

Really enjoying this site. Like some I don't find many who are familure with L C
but have always been interested in his lyrics.

My daughter once said to me that "white men past 40 rarely dance with dignity".
And I think Leonard uses the term "white man dancing" as the ultimate description of human ineptitude.

Well, some ideological analysis of that song in which I was recently involved shows that "the white men are dancing" while all this stuff are going in the world of The Future (did this future come?). It seems like great post-colonial metaphor, really great - maybe the best line in the whole song. Namely:
There’ll be the breaking
of the ancient western code
Your private life will suddenly explode
There’ll be phantoms
there’ll be fires on the road
and the white man dancing
You’ll see your woman
hanging upside down
her features covered by her fallen gown
and all the lousy little poets
coming round
trying to sound like Charlie Manson

Well depending on which version you listen to Maggie has claimed at different points to be different ages. In 1965 she claimed to be 54 in spite of actually being 68. By 1976 her claims became more outrageous, reducing her age to 24!
