those who were on the st.pietersplein get a nice way of explaining to those who were not there, how special these moments are.
i would have liked to tell you this and much more, on saturday night at de gruut, but the place is "not very friendly" for people on wheels, so when passing there, late friday afternoon, with my wife, we could not get in, and everyone was gone already ; on saturday night, at one o'clock, nobody was outside, and i did not want to leave my friend-on-wheels alone, so i just popped in for a quick glance at everyone, and got back home.
if you go to lille, next month, i'll try to meet you there, and then bring you our local stout, as dark and warm as leonard's voice (but less expensive than his concert tickets)

Pe: I thoroughly sympathize with your experience and the situation of your friend-on-wheels. I walk with two canes, having limited mobility and I found all four cities I visited in Europe on this LC adventure were not accessible friendly. Although my situation does not present as many barriers as for your friend-on-wheels, I did find that were many kindnesses shown and many were from strangers. I do want you to know that volunteer organizers always try their best but available facilities do not always pan out. As a North American, I found Europe a difficult place for the less abled. I am sorry we all could not meet and enjoy our common passion of appreciating the genius of Leonard Cohen.
Perhaps, if you contact the Lille organizers ahead of time, they may be able to find an accessible friendly meet-up place. I look forward to reading your Lille report on the forum.

I was touched by Quirijn's confession (page 3 of this thread) - he wants to share his doubt and his dissapointment with us. I think I can understand it, I have experienced the concerts also less intensive. Everything was going smoothly, almost perfect... I have always preferred authenticity to perfection....
But above all I want to say - please let's keep the forum nice and safe place, also open for criticism... Faith without doubt is blind....
To all,
Thank you for all the reactions I received on this forum and in private mails about my experience on the saturday concert.I didnot mean to attack someone, I was just sharing an unexspected feeling.I am glad that other people enjoyed everything even for three nights.
And Khayya:I agree that every concert is perfect,I even think that life is perfect. It is my view or attitude that makes it ugly or beautiful. But after living with Parkinson's disease for 7 years there are sometimes holes in my trusting the world.
I felt like a king in Ghent when I rode downhill with my scooter(step) after the soundcheck back to the GRUUT.But when I'm typing these words (my medicins do not work yet) I feel like an old man.I used to say to my children when they were young:"It is not the point what you meet in life, it's how you handle it.Now they are saying it to me!
At last I will mention you my highlight of saturday:during the soundcheck I went to the parking-garage(below the St.Pieters square) and to my surprise I suddenly saw the stage above me and I heard Leonard singing only accompanied by a guitar.Although I couldnot see hem it felt like a private concert for 5 minutes.
Thank you for this forum and have a good day

It was Maries birthday (along with jarkko's) on Sunday and I know for her, it was a very special weekend. She had a big smile on her face for the entire weekend....and if she's happy then I'm happy too.! A big thanks to Astrid (Tinkie)for arranging the very nice cakes for after the concert. ( I hope i'm not leaving anyone out) they were a nice touch in celebrating the dual birtyhdays.

Oh neat.

That was my birthday, too---- Although I am pretty sure I didn't have as good a birthday as Marie and Jarkko.

Well we're back in hot and humid Texas after a wonderful weekend in Ghent. I've been reading the comments with interest, particularly those about the setlists. Those who were at the meetup on Saturday evening after the concert may remember that I was hesitating about going again on the Sunday, although I couldn't put my finger on why. After reading others' remarks, I think that subconsciously I was afraid the second concert would be disappointing - I've never been to two concerts in a row before. However, we bought the tickets (thank you Astrid!) and I can honestly say that I don't regret the decision one iota. It was fascinating to be able to spot the little differences between each evening, and knowing what was was coming next actually added to the excitement. Also, the crowd had a different "feel", and we were sitting in completely different areas of the square, so the total experience was also different, and certainly for me, not boring or disappointing. In fact I enjoyed the second concert more. I think it's also important to remember that at every concert there will be people who've never seen Leonard before - they are just as important as those of us who've been to several (or many!) and they want to hear live what they've been catching glimpses of on YouTube, etc. It was fantastic to see Leonard in such good form, and I thought he seemed very happy and relaxed, if a little tired at times. It was so lovely to meet everyone - it was a really special weekend for me and Mark.
Astrid - thank you for the tickets!
Ingrid - it was lovely to meet you and we really enjoyed talking to you on both evenings.
Maarten - thanks for everything you did to make the weekend such a success.
Maarten's Mum & Dad - thanks for making us so welcome at the meetup on Saturday afternoon.
Arlene - it was lovely to see you again, and I hope you had a good trip home - I can see you've been very busy since your return!
Marie & Albert - really great to meet you both, we really enjoyed your company walking back & forth to the concerts.
Wendy & Tony - lovely to meet you again Wendy, and to meet another slightly reluctant husband (although I don't think either of them is really as reluctant as he makes out!)
Wybe and Willy - hey there sister and brother! Remember Houston is on the way to a desert oasis.
Jarkko and Eija - lovely to meet you both at last, and thanks for everything you do for us all.
Blonde German lady and husband from Berlin - I'm sorry I can't remember your names, but we enjoyed chatting with you on Sunday evening!
Lady from England who'd lived in all the same places as me - sorry I can't remember your name either, but it was good to chat to you too.
We plan to be at the "last" concerts in December, so we'll see many of you there!
Love to everyone,
Joy

arlene,
thanks for your sympathy, words like that always feel good.
my reactions were -as usual- much stronger than necessary, i especially did not want to offend all those people, who were very helpfull, on both evenings, or maarten & co, who organised the meet-up ; as you say : infrastructure often causes some problems (cobblestones, toilets without light), but people are mostly very kind, so there is no real ground for complaining, especially not, as i am the one who's making some noise, but my wife does not, nor my friend who was with me on the second night.
as for future meet-up in lille, i saw somewhere that some members plan to do something in their hotel-lobby, perhaps we'll join them there, or maybe i'll go to find some place in lille, myself -it's only one hours' drive away from home-, or maybe i can find some place with a little help from the french leonard cohen forum, i do not know yet, i'll find something, i guess.
anyway, as a way of saying thanks, to the people from "intro", + as i usually look at things from a different angle, i would like to give this photo of some volunteers,
thanks again

- bedankt, intro
pe

Thank you Al!!
1:27: It seems that
everything is "fragrant" - not only the "summer night."
And then LC is getting (quite rightfully) amused at himself at 4:52.
Am I alone in LOVING moments like these??
