Dear Leonard,

It is wonderful to be contemplating the day you were born into the world.

That brilliant little orb drifts on "the sea so deep and blind". Yet off our shores, the deep gave rise to the precious bubble of sentience.

And it is "the mind " which blackens your pages which has enriched my life as that of no other poet, composer, writer or artist.

As we celebrate the day of your birth, it is fitting that peace too will be celebrated around the world - in keeping with your message that "love's the only engine of survival".

Some will gather today near a steep bank, where a bronze of Leo Tolstoy overlooks the confluence of the Kootenay and the Columbia rivers. Stephen Lewis will inaugurate a new place of peace there. A place in the mountains where the "Unified Heart" can throb and thrive.

Your meme of the two entwined hearts reminds that, if one wishes peace for nations, then one will want to be a member of an order which cultivates the landscape of the interior.

Symbols of love, songs of hope, and words of peace. Prophecy, pain, passion, compassion, melody, beauty, spirit, and the sensual. Naked books, naked art, and naked songs. Strong words, powerful poems and the rhythms of a gentle heart.

So many gifts from you over so many years!

Thank you for your generosity and for your work.

If I could take everything you deem wonderful, delicious and beautiful and wrap it up into a big, bright bouquet then I would send it to you on this day.

Happy Birthday Leonard
And Blessed Be.

The director, actors, musicians and the crew of the theatrical performance Tonight Will Be Fine – Songs of Leonard Cohen congratulate maestro Cohen with admiration and love. The show has been great success and has got excellent reviews.
Somehow we the crew feel that we are under your special protection in translating your beautiful, wise and hilarious work to Finnish audiences. All of us are deeply moved by your music and lyrics and consider it to be a great honor to perform in your name.
Long may you reign,
on behalf of Hämeenlinna City Theatre, Finland

Dear Leonard!

Thank you for those precious moments we were able to spend with you in Warsaw.
For all those 35+ years spent with your songs.
For sharing your wisdom with us.

I am sure that if you turn around you'd be able to see the bunch of beautiful losers
following your footprints (or rather - mindprints, I should say).
You go your way, we go your way, too...

Happy 73rd birthday, Leonard.
LeChaim - To life!

Greetings from Mirek and his daughter Anna - Poznan, Poland

...I learned to know about mr. Cohen, at the gymnasium.
Once I saw him live, at Borgholm 1984. He made a great
performance, although it was blowing and raining into that
old ruin.

Since then my life has been full of ups and downs.
There were times when few months passed between listening
to his songs, but I always came back to him, and I cannot say
that about any other artist, although I listen to all kind of music.

For the moment my life is pretty much down.
But, mr. Cohen, your music and great personality - which set an
example for other artists - is one of those things that keeps me going,
and makes the life worth to live.

I wish you health, and many years of happiness.
Cheers from Linköping, Sweden! ;-)

P.S. Some hour ago I went by mistake to the Chat Forum, instead of this one.
I met there an american girl, who just recently learned to know about your songs.
She was quite impressed by I'm Your Man, but didn't know so much besides this.
I gave her some hints and I think you just got a new fan! :D

MANY HAPPY SOLAR RETURNS, LEONARD!

Hope you have a very happy birthday, and a wonderful year ahead. It was great to meet you and Anjani at The Richard Gallery, and good to re-connect you with Julie Felix (I'm sure that she would want me to convey her greetings, too). Looking forward to your appearance at the Barbican, and hopefully to further events in the coming year.

With very best wishes, John Etherington

Happy Birthday, Leonard!

Best wishes from the USA. I am a 21 year old writer, and I have to say that though you would humbly deny these claims; you are the best song writer this world has known and when I listen to your exalted words and read your pondered poems I can only hope to be a writer half as good! I'm eagerly awaiting your new album. Thank you for all the words, music, inspiration, and grace. My best wishes to Anjani as well, she is a beautiful person and a beautiful extension of your poetry. I hope to see you on the next tour.

in friendship,
Jake

Hear the bird
It's singing for you
See this butterfly flying by
Its colours are painted for you
Look at the stars this night
Their lights are shining for you
Open the window, smell the wind
This perfume is all yours.

Happy birthday Mr Cohen
