Hallo Lizzytysh

I know, I'm lazy, I thought I'd ask to save me searching for myself - however I did a quick search and was quite surprised to see pages and pages of Dory Previn info. In the quick scan of it that I did I don't think that she performs any more or at least hasn't done so recently. There is a fairly recentish CD that looks as if it contains material from her fist four albums but nothing new. I must go back sometime and look through it all properly.
I didn't know that Laura Nyro had passed on. She is someone else that I haven't listened to for years although I do have a copy of New York Tendaberry lurking in the depths of my LP collection. I should really get them out and play them - there's a lot of good music in there.
Also recently started listening to Joni Mitchell again - must be on some sort of nostalgia trip!!!

Yes, I also have my share of Joni Mitchell albums. I want to say that it was ovarian [maybe breast? but I think ovarian] cancer that Laura died from. The nostalgia that come with these women's songs......ahhhhh

. I also got a huge burst of it when I listened to the cd that was distributed through the newspaper recently in Britain [and sent to me by a friend from here ~ the Forum ~ as an early Christmas present]. Along with Leonard's "Suzanne" ~ rather oddly placed in the mix of songs on the cd ~ came "Just Like A Woman" by Bob Dylan. Not sure what all is attached in my memory bank with that song, but the nostalgia nearly wiped me out

I'm glad you were able to find the info on Dory. I'm guessing she must still be alive, or you'd have seen otherwise, even in a cursory glance of the site.

Hi Rock Rose ~

The Dory Previn albums I have are: "We're Children of Coincidence and Harpo Marx;" "Reflections in a Mud Puddle;" and "In Concert LIVE At Carnegie Hall." I bought them all in 1976, apparently when I first discovered Dory. I was thinking that I had "Mythical Kings and Iguanas," but I guess that came from there being six from it on the Carnegie Hall album. The dancing for her father song[s] that I like so much are "Taps Tremors and Time Steps [One Last Dance for My Father]" and "I Dance and Dance and Smile and Smile" ~ a very poignant song.

Did you ever tune into Chi Coltrane by any chance? She's from Chicago, named after the city, and personal friends with the [former] owner of the [former] Quiet Knight, the small, quaint club in Chicago [no longer in existence], where Leonard performed. She wrote, sang, played, and basically handled all aspects of getting her music onto record. Some great songs and very high energy, as well as the soft and slow. I think you'd enjoy her.

I think my favourite Dory song is The Lady With The Braid - very moving.
There are really so many talented people on this earth aren't there? It is so good to know about them and discover new ones from discussion in places like this forum.

I must admit to never having heard of Chi Coltrane (Chi - thats a lovely name do you know if it is the same 'chi' as in the 'life force' ?). I will be getting on to google and doing a search to find out more! Thank you for the recommendation

I've been thinking about other female singers from a ways back - how about Judy Collins? As you probably know she was very much instrumental in discovering Leonard. I remember seeing her on a British documentary on him years back and she recounted how she had heard Leonard singing and invited him to sing at one of her concerts. Apparently he had been very nervous but came out on stage and sang Suzanne and the audience went wild - the rest is history as they say.
Leonard also gives tribute to Jennifer Warnes acknowledging her as 'a true friend' because she really revived his career at a time when those in the music industry just didn't want to know him. She insisted on bringing out the album of Leonard's songs, Famous Blue Raincoat. Maybe this illustrates the old adage about there being a woman behind every successful man!

I am familiar with the 'freebie' CD you mention. I thought the inclusion of the Andy Williams song Music To Watch Girls By a wee bit strange - but maybe that's just me!

I checked and, unfortunately, it's as I thought. I do not have the song "The Lady with the Braid" on any of my Dory albums. She knows how to write very moving songs. I would like to hear this one. Which album is it on?

Yes, Chi is lovely name, isn't it. It's pronounced softly, as in "shy." When I first learned of and started listening to her, I wasn't aware of chi, as in the life force, or I'd have thought the same. I did her no favours in my initial pronunciation of her name

, pronouncing it "chai." Not that there's anything wrong with chai, of course, I love it

~ but as a name, "shy" certainly sounds nicer.

I hope you like her. I've only heard her first two albums. Wasn't even aware of there being more until sometime within the last six months, when I mentioned her, and then decided to look her up via Google. The two albums I have are simply, "Chi Coltrane" and "Thunder and Lightning."

As to that freebie cd, the "Music to Watch Girls By" was very odd to me at the time! Much less this many years later, and in a retrospective of this nature and with this particular selection of artists! Go figger

I would not find anybody to compare to Leonard.

That is not to say that I did not listen to anything else, but I would not like him to drown in a sea of other musicians (as I would not like others, either).

Jacques Brel is a poet and singer, whose variety and depth to my mind are quite close to Leonard's. He does not have Leonard's Jewish wit, though.

! I know your name from the other thread. I agree with you on there being no true comparison to Leonard, unique unto himself. Does not every artist wish to have said about them, "He/she sounds just like [him/her self]!"

That's got to be the highest compliment. Unless, of course, they're a mimic performer.

For me, Jacques had his own form of wit, much of it visible in his body language. I have a documentary given to me by a friend that proves Jacques to be very witty.....just quite different from Leonard.

Amongst many other languages, I don't know German

. What is the meaning of your signature? I recognize the word "Also"

, however, I suspect it may not mean the same as in English

. If so, well, I'm on may way to figuring out those lines. My choices? Find a German-English dictionary, or consult you. Guess which one I'm going for ~ for starters

Of course, "Jacky" is very witty, in his own way. I love his irony, the images he invents... but what makes Cohen unique is that (to my mind) typically Jewish way (Heine for example also had it) of switching between - or should I rather say 'combining'? - laughter and despair.

The passage I cite is from "Princess Sabbath". Heinrich parodizes Schiller's "Ode to joy" by replacing "joy" by "shalet" (a dish eaten on Sabbath, view http://www.jewish-food.org/recipes/shalet.htm for example) and says, that Schiller would have celebrated Shalet, if he had ever tasted it, instead of Joy. I'm not aware of "Jewish humour," enough to have accounted Leonard's to that. However, he definitely does combine laughter with despair ~ something I've always appreciated with him, but had no idea I could possibly have viewed it in an "ethnic" context. Do you see this as a survivalistic trait that has developed/evolved through the years out of the historical persecution of Jews? If you can't find some humour in it somewhere, you'll never survive, as you'll be consumed by the despair?

The lady with the braids is on mythical kings and iguanas the only Dory Previn CD I possess - I love her. She was married to Andre Previn the conductor who was married to Mia Farrow afterwards. They mix and match in the celeb world don't they

Has anyone heard of the group Love I recently bought their CD which has been remixed from the 60's what an awesome sound

, mix-and-match is an understatement to the max in the world of celebrity. No, I sure haven't heard of Love [that I know of], though there was a group that I think had Love in it.....I'm probably way off on it, though. I'll check the album I have in mind when I get home.

Bryce I was pleased to see you like Steeleye Span and Maddy Prior. The only CD I have of theirs is "All around my hat" her voice is beautiful.

I know when I finally pop my clogs there is gonna be a lot of fighting over my CD collection. And the weakest of the bunch is gonna get the lot whether they like it or not

I have a Val Doonigan CD can ANYONE top that. It has "Patrick McGinty's Goat" on it

Can't comment on any of the artists listed in your last post, as I've never heard of them [apparently a good sign]. Maybe it's cuz I'm not British, though?

Remembered the name of the Love group, but seriously doubt it's it. This was Love Unlimited, but it was from the 70s and even though it has a pleasant sound, it was more like floating-about-at-the-disco sound. It's a black group, I think three.

Did you know that the song Lemon Haired Ladies allegedly refers to Mia Farrow?

I have heard of Love - I remember their song called Alone Again Or which is probably on your CD. I think somebody did a cover version of it fairly recently. If I remember correctly I think they were an American band but I'm not sure.

Did you buy your Val Doonican or did someone give you it thinking you were a fan - OR are you a fan?!!!
