If I had to choose just one 'Fairport Convention' album it would be 'What we did on our Holidays'- all the bandmembers' interests and inputs are there. Fantastic! Denny is dazzling.
Philo, have you ever come across Sandy Denny's 'The BBC Sessions 1971-73'. It was only ever available for a few months,so there can't be many around. It's solo Denny - rough around the edges, but brilliant.

On their demo recording they covered 'Story of Isaac'.
Also, I have just discovered that they are appearing together in a 'surprise, unadvertised gig on Halloween Night at Scott's in Dun Laoghaire'!
You've talked me into it.....Spotlight is now on my Xmas list :D

Can't imagine what their cover of Story of Isaac sounds like..I wouldn't have guessed that one.

Is Dun Laoghaire anywhere near Matlock???

Phil, what do you think of Might Rearranger??

Look what Plant is up to now:
Robert Plant has been spotted out and about in Nashville recently, but he's not on vacation. According to the Tenneseean newspaper, the LED ZEPPELIN singer is working on a duets project with country and bluegrass star Alison Krauss.
All the old rockers are going country these days. Should be interesting to hear the result of their collabaration.

Pete   . What will you and David do once your next birthdays arrive? It will be very confusing for you both.

OK, here is my list. This was the music of my youth:

Billy Joel
Bruce Springsteen
Queen
Dire Straits
Beethoven
Pink Floyd
Marillion
ACDC
Leonard Cohen
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Doors
Led Zep
Abba
Eric Clapton
Bad Company
Rush
Rainbow
Deep Purple
Meatloaf/Jim Steinman
Joe Cocker
Jon and Vangelis
Yes
The Doors
Genesis
Jimi Hendrix
Pat Benatar
Nazareth
Jethro Tull
James Taylor
The Moody Blues
ELO
Ian Dury and the Blockheads
Joni Mitchell
James Taylor
David Bowie
Alice Cooper
Neil Young
Joe Walsh
Joan Baez
Roxy Music
Kris Kristofferson (one solitary lp I had, played it a lot)
Joan Armatrading
Moody Blues
The Who
Steve Harley
Tina Turner
Simon and Garfunkel
Ian Hunter and M the H
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown
Hawkwind

I was going to add Guns n Roses, but they came a bit later than "my time".

See you later,

borntobewild63

diane - wasnt jim morrison just drop dead gorgeous? have you seen the doors movie which was supposedly a portrait of his life? apparently not an official version, as the band members did not approve of how morrison was portrayed. - would have been fab to see jim and his infamous lizard playing live. he really was outrageous and pushed the boundaries in so many ways, as did a number of his contemporaries. the music was wonderfully trippy, psychedelic stuff, think i'll go and dig a couple of cds out, dust them and then give them a spin....

Good to see Jon and Vangelis in your list. I only put Vangelis in mine but on reflection I should have added Jon.
I just love Short Stories and Friends of Mr Cairo and Private Collection and that's where they should have stopped. Page of Life was a disappointment.

The song 'State of Independence' is the definitive version. It was wrong for others to even try to copy it :-)

My LP version of Mr Cairo did not have their hit single on (Find my way home). They put this song on later and changed the cover. I guess my LP is quite collectable.

Hawkwind.....As my brother had all their records I never needed to buy any but I did have my own copy of 'Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters' by Robert Calvert (RIP). I also have the cd version and listening to it with ear phones through my walkman (no ipods for me!!!) whilst washing the car was awesome. I don't know if you have heard this album but Arthur Brown guests on it and the range of his voice is tremendous.
Have you heard Journey by Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come. I think it's his best work. I didn't really get into Galactic Zoo Dossier but do have an LP called 'Dance' by Arthur Brown which has many cover songs on it. His voice adds so much.

I could go on but it's past my bed time...us classic rockers need our beauty sleep.

diane - two more things - alice cooper presents planet rocks early morning show, he has a wry wit which frequently sets me up nicely for the day.

secondly, i have always been curious about jim steinmans music as i shared the same surname with him before i married. although i have only ever seen one album by him.

off to covet in the halls of consumerism - particularly the music ones. yum 8)

Hi Phil,

I'm afraid I don't agree about Jim Morrison being good looking. In all his photos, he had that kind of crazy look in his eyes which might make someone interesting, but certainly doesn't make them attractive. But that's just me. No I haven't seen The Doors movie, but I read JM's biog, No-one Here Gets Out Alive, many moons ago. I rarely listen these days, although if any Doors comes on the radio I'm right back there... I sold most of my old LPs :( , only have the Doors on tape these days, and those tapes are in the attic :) .

I saw Alice Cooper last year, rather good he was too.

Yes, Jim Steinman only had out one album in his own name - Bad for Good. It is well worth having, has some ace tracks on it, although not quite as good as Bat out of Hell, for example. (Jim Steinman was a long-time collaborator of Meat Loaf's, and wrote his best stuff as you prob know).

btw, I see Roger Waters is playing Earls Court 11th May next year...

Pete,

Yes, I love Short Stories and Friends of Mr Cairo. I agree, what was that terrible disco version of State of Independence? Sacrelige!

I have Vangelis' Odyssey (the definitive collection) on cd which I enjoy every once in a while. It has I'll Find My Way Home and State of Independence as bonus tracks too.

I imagine you have a few collectible LPs. Mine are all long-since sold. Robert Calvert was brilliant! (I recommend you get an ipod btw; the sound quality is superior to that of a walkman, it really is.)

Arthur Brown's voice! Yes, his vocal range is a phenomenon! I saw him (he was support to Robert Plant) a couple of years ago in Cardiff, and he was just amazing. I would go so far as to say he has the most amazing voice of anyone I have seen live. Brilliant.
have an LP called 'Dance' by Arthur Brown which has many cover songs on it. His voice adds so much.

I have Dance on tape - somewhere in the attic  . Next weekend I might venture up there and sweep away the cobwebs from the carrier-bags full of tapes that reside up there. Actually, haven't they just discovered the biggest cave in England up your way, Pete? Please let me know if they find any of my old LPs in it.

See you later,

Diane

Roger Waters in town??? In the flesh? Is he appearing in Matlock? If so, I think I'll pop along. Since Roger Waters and Pink Floyd went their separate ways I've followed the Roger Waters track. I love his 3 albums...Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking, radio Kaos and Amused to Death. I can never decide which of these three is my favourite. If push came to shove it would be Pros and Cons.

Vangelis!!! Some great albums over the years. I think I have all his studio albums on cd now (and some soundtracks) except for the one you mention at the end of your post :) ...'See you later'..... Have it on LP but I search for the cd at a reasonable price.

Yes...we have the biggest cave in Debyshire. Your LPs are not there..I checked just before tea.

Is your attic as big as our cave? If so, you'll probably find them there..just shine your torch into the far recesses.

See you later

On BBC 4 last night they showed Supertramp. It was the 30 min show from their 'Sight and Sound' series way back in the 70's.
Next Friday it is Procul Harum.
