The tree would be a great location for a bronze plaque or sculpture, UrPal...

As a small element of celebrations I suggest a special issue car sticker. I lost my "warning driver under the influence of Leonard Cohen" sticker when I changed car and would really love another one....proceedings could go to something worthwhile.

An unusual célébration is needed ... Among Others... Why not a worldwide celebration....Leonard Cohen being a World citizen.... We could think of 80 great places where mémorable concerts were held and have something spécial in each of those places ,on that very day (21 september) music- poems- short videos bursting outside , and passers- by comments....a kind of wonderful bouquet of Happy Birthdays from the world.
I am from Paris and I am sure we could do that in the city.....

Whilst I'd be happy to donate to a single idea, I also like the tree planting suggestion or we could each do something in our own communities to commemorate Leonard's birthday.
It could be tidying an area, helping a neighbour, hosting an event or just inviting some friends round to celebrate Leonard's birthday.
If we each report what we've done then Leonard will know that we were all thinking of him and wishing him well.

LizzieM -
Love your idea.
How about everyone does 80 thoughtful acts of kindness?
Of course, this could encompass tree planting.... Even planting 80 trees!

A letter to the editor in the Montreal Gazette today -
This seems like a good place to put it.
http://www.montrealgazette.com/Letter+T ... story.html
Letter: There should be a monument to Leonard Cohen

The Gazette April 18, 2014 11:42 A.M.

Some people think that we should honour Mordecai Richler with a monument; why not?

Personally if people want to put up money to have a monument honouring Leonard Cohen, I’m your man; I’m all for it!

Now there’s a poet.

Written in stone:
"Walk of Leonard Cohen", e.g. on Hydra, marked with fragments of his lyrics engraved in stone(s)/rock(s).

What about a Bronze Bust of Leonard.
This could be placed in an Art Gallery in Montreal.
There is a Gentlemen in Australia that makes them and they looks absolutely beautiful.
I just found his website http://www.sculpturerobertchitchcock.co ... lptor.html
The bust he made for Leonard looks really good. Something to think about.

There's a lot of really great idea's here and I'd I'll be happy with whatever is chosen.

I liked Lizzie M's idea.

with the tag line that A.Sukitu said in response "80 thoughtful acts of kindness".

Each person could send in a scanned image (photo, painting, inked stick figure) that could be added into a collage. There could be a card to write your gift; For your birthday I ...

I really like the idea of Anne Porter: A bench on Hydra with something nice written on it; on the way from Hydra town to Kamini facing the ocean, watching the sunset......sitting there and knowing Leonard has spent a lot of time looking the same direction .... i love this idea

Completely agree with the idea of a bench on Hydra where Leonard lived and found the inspiration to write his lyrics and songs. And nice for all the Cohenites to sit on when they visit Hydra :-)

Yes, a bench on Hydra on the way from Hydra town to Kamini facing the ocean, is the best idea I think.

With a view like this.
