2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
Re: 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
They just discussed The 2008 Rock Hall on CNN. Canadian John Roberts reporting the controversy over Madonna. He used to be a VJ for Much Music and a News Anchor for CTV. He also mentioned Leonard Cohen and said First We Take Manhatten and Suzanne were his biggest hits in the U.S. Questioning Leonard Cohen's credentials and comparing his induction with the controversy over Miles Davis' induction a few years ago. I got the whole thing on tape. I will eventually put it on youtube.

VH1.com has updated their Leonard Cohen pages and added more photos, but they still use the Martin Beek painting as the main page photo, with that white thing sticking out of Cohen's mouth. They have not added Cohen's music videos yet!

Re: 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
I'm so pissed off right now!! CNN was supposed to do a report on tonight's Rock Hall induction Ceremony--AND what happens???
BREAKING NEWS! The Governor of New York involved in a prostitution ring.
They have been going at it for the past two damn hours. No report on the Rock Hall!! We will never know what video and photo footage of Leonard Cohen CNN chose to show of him for the report or what they had to say about him!!!!!

I can't seem to get it!!! It won't play... the time ticks off on it, but I look at a blank screen! I have Windows Media Player, but not the latest... and I don't think my system would handle it, anyway... and it seems to say it would take 120 minutes to download it, anyway

Re: 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
THE 2008 ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME
Introduction speech by Jann Wenner
We'll be celebrating the folk based writing and singing of Leonard Cohen.
The order of Inductions:
01. Gamble & Huff
02. Little Walter
03. The Ventures
04. Leonard Cohen
05. Madonna
06. John Mellencamp
07. The Dave Clark Five
Leonard Cohen inducted by Lou Reed
Song that played while Leonard Cohen was walking up onto the stage: I'm Your Man
Leonard Cohen's Speech:
Oh thank you so much friends, and Lou thank you so much for reminding me that I wrote a couple of good lines. I inducted you into my own ghostly hall of fame many many years ago. You flourished there from then until this very day. Thank you so much.
This is a very unlikely occassion for me. It is not a distinction that I coveted or even to dare dream about. I am reminded of the prophetic statement of Jon Landau in the early 70s. He said I have seen the future of Rock & Roll and it's not Leonard Cohen. So very pleased to be here. Such an unlikely event. To stand here among the inductees tonight is a great privilege and a great honor.
(Reciting Tower of Song)
Thank you friends.
Leonard Cohen poked fun at a quote from Rollingstone writer, Jon Landau, who is also on the voting committee, and who was in the audience. Everyone in the audience started laughing. Jon Landau wrote an article back in 1974 about Bruce Springsteen, which is still very well remembered to this day:
I've seen the future of Rock and Roll and its name is Bruce Springsteen -- Jon Landau
Jon Landau once said, I've seen the future of Rock And Roll and it's not Leonard Cohen -- Leonard Cohen, 2008
Obviously Jon Landau never said that.
He started cracking up with Chevy Chase.
Leonard then recited Tower of Song. Audience laughing!
Damien Rice performed Hallelujah
The All-Star Jam: The Dave Clark Five music

Cohen never 'dared dream' about Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Madonna, John Mellencamp also inducted

Leonard Cohen joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, an honour the Canadian poet and song writer said he never imagined possible.
Leonard Cohen poses after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday in New York.
(Evan Agostini/Associated Press)
Cohen, speaking at the induction ceremony at New York City's Waldorf-Astoria hotel, recited the lyrics to his song Tower of Song in a hushed voice.
"This is a very unlikely occasion for me," said Cohen, in a black tuxedo. "It is not a distinction that I coveted or even dared dream about."
The Montreal-born Cohen is one of music's most highly regarded songwriters, through pieces like Suzanne, First We Take Manhattan and the much-covered Hallelujah.
He started out as a poet, but has been writing and recording his own music since the 1960s.
Musician Lou Reed, who was inducting Cohen on Monday night, carried a sheaf of papers to the stage and read several examples of Cohen's lyrics.
"We're so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is," said Reed, best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the Velvet Underground.
Madonna defied her doubters
Madonna, also inducted into the Hall of Fame Monday, recalled a teacher who encouraged her to follow her dreams when she was only 14.
"Thirty-five years later, people are still encouraging me to believe in my dreams," she said. "What more could I ask for?"
She said she even draws inspiration from the people who called her "talentless" and "chubby," and labelled her as a "one-hit wonder" who couldn't sing.
"They inspired me because they made me question myself repeatedly and pushed me to be better."
Pop singer Justin Timberlake, who helped produce Madonna's upcoming album, inducted her with an innuendo-laden speech.
"The world is full of Madonna wannabes. I might have even dated a couple," said Timberlake, whose once dated Britney Spears. "But there is truly only one Madonna."
Madonna didn't perform Monday, but asked punk rockers Iggy Pop and the Stooges to sing her 1983 hit Burning Up and the 1998 single Ray of Light.
'I'm lucky to be standing here'
U.S. heartland hitmaker John Mellencamp joined in the celebration with a rumbling version of Authority Song.
"I wrote this song and I still feel the same way today as I did when I wrote it 25 years ago," he said.
He talked of having surgery for spina bifida when he was six weeks old, saying doctors were worried he would be paralyzed below the neck. The 56-year-old rocker said his grandmother always whispered in his ear: "Buddy, you're the luckiest boy alive."
"I'm lucky to be standing here for any number of reasons," said Mellencamp, a heart patient who snuffed out a cigarette as he took the stage.
Famed Philly soul producer Kenny Gamble was also inducted, along with partner Leon Huff. They were introduced by soul singer Patti LaBelle, who performed their song If You Don't Know Me By Now.
The songwriters and producers are known for their lush, melodic brand of soul, including the hit Me and Mrs. Jones.
The Dave Clark Five, led by drummer and songwriter Clark, entered the hall at a tragic time: singer Mike Smith died at age 64 of pneumonia less than two weeks ago.
The Ventures, who excelled at what is almost a forgotten art in rock music — the instrumental — were also inducted, as was Little Walter, who recorded frequently with Muddy Waters in the 1950s before his death in 1968.

I'm guessing this is a marketing tactic. I'm imagining all the BEST BUY stores in North America showing the 2008 Rock Hall ceremony on all the TV screens they have on display for sale. The stores will all be flooded with people watching the show, and buying products. BEST BUY closes at 10PM. They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom

The reason I had mentioned Leonard Cohen's upcoming Rock Hall 2008 performance in the Tour 2008 thread was because it's a 2008 performance. I thought maybe some people who don't care about the Rock Hall and don't read the Rock Hall thread might still want to be informed about watching his performance online or maybe even attending the ceremony itself. It's sort of like a part of the Tour. The start of it maybe. (Tour 2008 thread: over 37,000 views; Rock Hall thread: over 14,000 views)

The 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame page on BESTBUY.COM is now up!!
http://www.bestbuy.com/
http://www.bestbuy.com/halloffame
You will need to download the latest version of Windows Media Player to your computer if you don't already have it.
They have included the first paragraph of each of the inductees Rock Hall biography. Leonard Cohen's of course, is the one that ends with the part about giving Kurt Cobain a Leonard Cohen afterworld so he can sigh eternally.
Best Buy has also included their little take on the whole thing:
An original diva (Madonna), a Rock legend (Leonard Cohen), a heartland favorite son (John Mellencamp) and more--these legendary artists are set to be enshrined with other rock and roll luminaries.
Once again here's the page

Thanks Yank!
As has been noted elsewhere, I was disturbed to see I'm Your Man and Field Commander Cohen priced at 4.99, but out of stock. Second page shows lots of albums out of stock. What's up with that ?????

Hey, all Leonard Cohen admirers, I only learned of Mr. Cohen, when the film :"I'm Your Man", was released on DVD, and in case you haven't seen it you really should, you will cry, laugh, and be changed for ever. I cannot get him out of my head! I was an instant fan!
Mr. Cohen, has been a nominee since 1993, and this is a well deserved nomination/induction, Mr. Leonard Cohen is an artist who will affect people for the rest of time, from young to old, I wish they would play more of his work on the Radio.
The induction ceremony will be on March 10, 2008. At the Waldorf-Historia Hotel in New York City.
Inductees/Performers are as follows;
*Leonard Cohen
*The Dave Clark Five ( Dave Clark, Lenny Davidson, Rick Huxley, Denis Payton and Mike Smith)
*Madonna
*John Melencamp
*The Ventures (Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards, Gerry McGee, Mel Taylor, Don Wilson).
2008 inductees were chosen by 600 voters of The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Foundation,
Twenty five years after their first released recording, artists are eligible for inclusion in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will air live on VH1 Classic March 10,2008, Make sure that is what you have, or where to watch it, I think that would be a great DVD to own! I am sure that it will become available that will take some research too.
To read the complete article go to; http://www.futurerockhall.com/2008_inductees.php.

VH1 NEWS just played a 2 minute segment of a recent interviews with John Mellencamp and Madonna, then they ran down the list of this year's inductees. The clip they chose for Leonard Cohen was of him in the Closing Time music video. I Can't wait to see the video bio-intro they do for Leonard Cohen at the Rock Hall induction ceremony just before Lou Reed walks out on stage to give his speech and present Leonard Cohen. Plus, which Leonard Cohen song the Rock Hall chooses to play while Leonard is walking up to the stage. I wonder which video and interview footage of Cohen they will use. There will probably be new and exclusive rock hall interview footage as well.

Wow. I didn't expect to be so moved. It seems I spend most of my life trying to not cry and consider myself an expert at the task, not tonight. It was so moving, all of it. Lou Reed's obvious real respect really set the tone, then reading poetry, what a bonus; and of course Leonard knew exactly what to say. Damien Rice's singing of Hallelujah was perfect.
Yankovich, I feel like I should thank you personally for making this happen. You have been a tireless champion in promoting his getting inducted to the Hall of Fame. So thanks for all your enthusiam over the years...

Seeing two of my biggest musical icons on the same stage (Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen) was AWESOME!!! Granted, Lou's induction speech was a bit strange, Leonard's was absolutely perfect. Thanks for all your enthusiasm and effort and for keeping us so well informed.

Dave
Leonard Cohen poked fun at a quote from Rollingstone writer, Jon Landau, who is also on the voting committee, and who was in the audience. Everyone in the audience started laughing. Jon Landau wrote an article back in 1974 about Bruce Springsteen, which is still very well remembered to this day:
I've seen the future of Rock and Roll and its name is Bruce Springsteen -- Jon Landau, 1974
Jon Landau once said, I've seen the future of Rock And Roll and it's not Leonard Cohen -- Leonard Cohen, 2008
Obviously Jon Landau never said that. Everyone in the audience was cracking up.
The 2008 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame

The 2008 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was 5 hours long on VH1 Classic.
VH1 will air a 2-hour highlight edition of the 2008 Rock Hall at 11:00 PM on Saturday, March 22. I don't know what they will be leaving out. Probably the performances. They might also show backstage interviews with the inductees. VH1 NEWS just showed a 2-minute recap of the 2008 ceremony, which included video of Leonard Cohen in the pressroom holding up his trophy and a VH1 interview with The Ventures. So, there is obviously a Leonard Cohen interview as well that we will have to watch for on March 22. The reporter in the little news segment called Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, "touching". They will be playing this little NEWS segment all throughout the day. I will tape it.They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom

Re: 2008 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
Lou's induction speech was a couple of anecdotes and reading most of his poems and lyrics, and it came across that "Beautiful Losers" had a big influence on him, but it was Cohen telling Reed that he liked "I'll Be Your Mirror" that confirmed his faith in himself as a songwriter. I think Bono would've given a better speech, but not as heartfelt as Reed gave.
He did mention the governor scandal during the speech and the audience kind of booed him a little, but he mentioned something about it being New York and having freedom of speech.
Cohen had to have felt weird being at a rock hall induction, and prob. would've preferred being nominated in the same area that Gamble and Huff were nominated in.
My feeling is that John Cale should've been singing "Hallelujah", as it is his version of it that Jeff Buckley covered, plus with Reed being there, but Damien did a great job with it.
Iggy Pop singing Madonna, Billy Joel being the funniest, Justin Timberlake getting a B-12 shot from Madonna, Dave Clark's eyebrows, and an off key harmonica during the finale.
They were bleeping a lot of curse words out, which I thought they should've just left in.
Cohen looks great.
