I think the articles that Tom refers to are usually found in our daily papers in the 'Entertainment' section. Not quite up to par with the "Enquirer", but of a similar ilk. Kate & Johnny, Brad & Angeline, etc. Also, our computers are just loaded with this kind of stuff. Under the guise of 'entertainment', sometimes even 'news'. It's hard to avoid, try as one might.

Unfortunately, here we have total spreading of sensational journalism thru all the TV stations and press, and also total big-brotherisation of TVs. I think we're in very bad transition period. It's common in all Central-European, former Communist countries these years.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Tom!

now, on reading newspapers. recently most of the big news agencies fell for a stupid joke that a few kids pulled how American actor, Christopher Walken, is running for president! they made a little web page, http://www.walken2008.com/, and most of the newspapers didn't even check it. i mean - is that how nespapers are supposed to get their news? from the internet where anyone can write whatever they want?

Chomsky once said that Z-institute was started to teach people to pile the layers of lies from the newspapers and reach the truth. this sort of 'news' makes you wander - is there ANY truth beneath all those lies?

what i wanted to say was:
bad journalism is not a Croatian monopoly, and YES, Tom, you should realy stop reading newspapers. i also used to read them, but i first cut it down to 'only for free in coffee bars', and now i'm almost 100% clean.

sounds a lot like giving up the cigarettes, right?

 Jurica ~ Way to break the habit  !

Yes, I also meant to comment that the shift on Britney from "Most Hated" to "Most Unpopular" makes for a major shift in perspective. [The power of words  .]

What do you think, how everyone get the news that Leonard was sued for exortion in June? No one checked anything, they just copied the news from unreliable Colorado-based gossip online magazine. - Btw, I can't believe about Walken: I read the news in newspapers, it sounded serious! And nobody demanted it!

And thanks. See you on Thursday.

Tom Sakic wrote:Lizzytsyh, I don't read such magazines  But every daily newspaer here has the page called "Life" or "Spectacles" or "Stars" (the same page where all of them published "Leonard Cohen's Financial Breakdown" news :? ) - and on those pages are such things re-taken from other UK or US magazines. Like, the most unpopular celebrities (Britney, Paris Hilton, Victoria Beckham, Madonna, etc), or most sexies (Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt), plus you have the best tits, the best legs, the best asses, pardon me, you know, the most sexiest woman in the world (Eva Longoria, whoever she might be) - don't tell me that your TVs or magazines aren't full of that? Or is it just here? :? :(
I NEVER read newspapers, tv, fashion or pop mags of any sort. Only read computer mags, actually. I prefer books.

I get my news from radio (preference), tv, or news on-line. NONE of 'em make a big feature of anyone's buttocks, legs or chests - or if they do, I switch off. Boring.

So why am I posting in this thread? Dunno. Maybe I just wanna brag or something...

I have been and still am a fan of Madonna since the 80s.

I've always considered Madonna to have more substance and true savvy than Britney. Don't really consider them in the same 'category.'

Did I see a 'Happy Birthday, Tom' way up there? If the news is true, ditto from me. If not, well, what's another misrepresentation among many? One more 'untruth' can't kill us now.

Looking forward to seeing Gina Davis play the first female president of the US. The role models in pop culture have been for the most part crap since Madonna. Madonna set women back  don't get me started on her. Briteny, Jessica Simpson   their fans are junior high students who are developing a a sense of self and these are the popular ones  I like Pam Anderson she is gorgeous and has a sense of humour and humility about herself. She seems down to earth even thought she is a sex goddess.
Intelligence and bravery should pull more weight than looking like a Barbie doll.

Tom ~ Happy Birthday!!!

I'm sorry I'm so distracted, Tom, but I'm very consumed by the progression of the aftermath of the storm, and severe deterioration of conditions in New Orleans.

Happy Birthday, Tom ~ Dear and valued contributor and friend!!!

I'll give you a Happy Birthday Hug in Berlin :D .

Love,
Elizabeth

I wanted to add one note: not reading of newspapers and not watching the TV isn't because of gossip-entertainment columns and people like Paris Hilton, but there's much bigger problem... Masha & I were watching daily news few days ago, and she said Is wolrd really going mad? I mean, there were only flood, fires, wars, terrorism, bin laden, attacks, bombs, and how US government put those awful amandmans against UN declaration about world goals... You know, people always thought the world is in crisis (and in 1951 Allan Watts wrote Wisdom of Insecurity: A Message for an Age of Anxiety, claiming that crisis reach its top in his time; what would he say today?) - but looking at news every day it seems that we're really going toward very, very insecure future. There's post-2001 state system, and there's oil which is in its very last years before it totally dissapears. I am looking and wondering: are there really people who can like such situation because of their own purposes (from religious beliefs or fanaticism on one side to making more money on the other side). Why would someone blow the bus full of people? Why would someone crash the plane into the building? Why would someone keep permanent state of "war" against the terrorism to get his investments going on? I have a friend who firmly beliefs 9-11 was made by government to make the system going on, and believning that the oil is fundamental reason. Only darwinists will survive in 21th century. The other says it's time to consider we all have refugee in country or Bosnian mountains when the oil reaches 200 $ and the electricity and cell phones and internet cease to exist. Is it late to go to space for human kind? We are living in very bad times. Or it just appears so? What's happening to us all?
