Thanks, Maarten, this account also corresponds to the photo of Cohen's old passport (also in Nadel's book).
Of course, this leaves me wondering about his eye-colour, because a few people I know who have met Mr. Cohen swear that his eyes are green (despite the "hazel" on the old passport and in this account you have mentioned). Perhaps that's a subject for another thread...

Full circle back to my first reply back in December (see page 1)!
Wendy
PS I'd agree with hazel.

With all due repect to the accuracy of Nadel's description, I must affirm my earlier post....... at age 38, I was also 5'8 ......and now several decades later, the aging process puts me closer to 5'6, and, as you can see from the picture with Leonard after the LV concert in 2010 ( thank you Maarten !) , Leonard is slightly shorter!
Time marchs on!

When Leonard and I met at the Green Note Café in October 2007, eye-contact was exactly level, so that makes him 5ft 6 ins ... or less if age has shrunk me!

epilepsyblues:
Leonard Cohen’s first passport
height: 5 feet 8 inches
eyes: hazel
hair: brown
According to Ira Nadel’s biography of Leonard, Various Positions:
Cohen’s first passport, issued on October 29, 1959, initiating decades of international travel
I guess we now have the definitive answer

although the hair color is now incorrect

Mary - I used to be 5'8"" as well, but that was 30 years ago!
Unfortunately gravity has a sneaky way of creeping down !

Oh dear, so the question remains unanswered.

In support of Leonard from Montreal, my quick check on height loss material suggests that we lose about a centimetre/half-inch every ten years from 40 years of age onwards, due to inter-vertebral disc flattening, joint space narrowing (both with help of gravity plus wear and tear) and muscle mass loss.
Here is a link to a more scientific study on the subject, which reports an average cumulative loss (from 30 years of age) of 3 - 5 cm for men at 70 and 80 years of age respectively, with a corresponding loss of 5 - 8 cm for women:

Cheers,
Andrew
P.S. The moral of the story is this: we all grow up, only to grow down again!

So, according to this, I should have shrunk 1 inch and 1/4, yet I am still the same height

I guess with anything like this, it's just an expected "average range" and there will always be the outlying examples (as in the Bell curve) - anyway, lucky you!
Cheers,
Andrew

Mary, seriously, have you never noticed this tendency for older folks to shrink in height? My mom used to be almost my height, and now I practically tower over her (she is 82, and has probably shrunk more than average). It is a perfectly normal part of aging (for most people -- there are always exceptions!).

I have said before and from my experience of being next to him and Vicomtesse, Leonard is certainly not a lot taller than 5'6".

well........ it's a fact, we do shrink !!!!

thks Andrew for your search
my height always was 162 cm
1999 160 cm
2013 158 cm
since 5 months I'm going to a chiropractor (my pelvis was not in balance, 2 1/5cm at the left - 1 1/2cm at the right)
so I thought that caused my shrinking.......... NOT............
about 5 weeks ago he was stretching out my legs and asked him if he was going to make me taller, so I told him that I
shrunk 4 cm, then he showed me on a skelet that it were the disks in the spine that are getting thinner !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
next time I will ask him what will happen when the disks are gone
still, Leonard stays 10 cm taller than me and that makes me
