I've been listening to Lenny since the 60s, I even had that poetry Lp with some other poets on. Not that I was much of a fan then, I just liked the unusual. Way back then I listened to what they called underground. Pink Floyd, Spooky Tooth, Zappa and Beefheart Hawkwind, King Crimson, Van der Graaf (who I happened to see yesterday in London. The list goes on. (not forgetting Roy Harper and Richie Havens) Moving onto the 80s I was well into The Enid in turn opened me up to Classical Music. Now I'm into The Kronos Quartet, John Adams, Philip Glass (long before 'Book of Longing' I might add) Steve Reich, I'm also into Dylan Thomas and Alan Bennett. But you know over the years those classic recordings that remain in the front of your collection, well Lenny still does it for me. He's right there. Peter

Hi Peter,

Of Richie Havens, of the songs I've heard him sing, I don't think that any have
been good enough to match the quality of his voice and soul. I've enjoyed
many, though. :D

Hi Minna,

I totally agree that Dylan's "Mississippi" is the greAtest track on one of his greatest (and most varied) albums. Meanwhile, "That Lucky Old Sun" is a new work that Brian Wilson created for the re-opening of The Royal Festival Hall, last September. He performed it there for six nights and at other venues in the U.K. The only song that was not original was the song "That Lucky Old Sun" which appears in part at the beginning and near the end (this is the song recorded by Cash, Ray Charles etc.), though Brian added some "spiritual chords" to it. The work contains some adapted but previously un-releAsed songs from Brian, and some new ones - notably the stunning "Midnight's Another Day" which many think is his greatest song since "Surf's Up". There are five short "narrative" pieces in the work written by Van Dyke Parks, and Brian's main lyricist on the album is band-member Scott Bennett. The work is largely a positive and nostalgic piece about LA and is comparable to "Smile". It was performed with the Stockholm Strings 'n Horns, who also played with Brian and his band on the "Smile" tour.

All the best, John E

I just came across this thread, and I was surprised by this! I love EJs Empty Sky album (when I can tear myself away from Leonard, which hasn't happened for quite a while!). Great songwriting, and a unique, raw sound. Elton's early work is exceptional.

Well, back to Leonard. ;-) Cheers!

Lisa - I'd forgotten this thread, until I saw it here the other day ...it seems I got very involved in it! Anyway, I'm glad that you share my appreciation of Elton's greatest album. "Valhalla" and "Skyline Pigeon" are my favourites (I love the harpsichord). Another favourite is the single "It's Me That You Need" which is included as an extra. I finally picked-up a copy of "Rare Masters" for £3.00 at Fopp, last year. That collection contains some good stuff, too.

All good things, John E

Hi John,

Ah, yes, I remember listening to Skyline Pigeon over and over, it's beauty and simplicity are astounding (kind of reminds me of some of Leonard's songs!). Elton also recorded a piano version of it (a b-side to a single I have somewhere, from long ago!), but I, too, prefer the harpsichord. I just noticed that Empty Sky was re-released with bonus tracks (It's Me That You Need was also a b-side to a single, as I recall. I know I've heard it somewhere!). Another favourite album of mine was Elton's "11-17-70" live album, with a very rocking version of Burn Down the Mission, plus a fun cover of the Stone's Honky Tonk Woman (if my memory serves me correctly!). I don't even know if that one is available anymore. Quite a different "live" Elton than the one that appeared a few years later!

I'll have to check out "Rare Masters," since this thread is the first I'd heard of it (I'm totally out of touch on things Elton, although when I was a teen I was his biggest fan! I still have most of his stuff on vinyl, and some on CDs, but not the re-released ones with bonus tracks!).

Cheers,
Lisa
