Anjani and Leonard in Europe, USA and Canada

~ "Anjani's not daft" ~ This so much has the feel of a "gold digger's" judgement about someone... except the "gold" isn't money, in the typical sense of that term, which generally has a connotation of cars, jewelry, furs, and spending money, rather than a career. It has the feel of "She's no fool... she knows a good thing when she sees it... she . . . [whatever else one might say when they're being assessed as taking advantage of someone]."

It kind of makes her sound like she is in a Leonard Cohen poem.

You can't win against Lizzytysh. She's so enamoured of LC that she will brook no "criticism" of her idol. She will grind you into dust.

My problem with Anjani is that all her songs are on the same musical plane. There's rarely a surprise. She does have a beautiful voice. So does Perla, Julie, Sharon, and Jenny. None of whom ever managed to attain top billing on their own. Well, mabe Jennifer. Even then her album was known as "Jenny sings Lenny". I just think that Anjani is in the same category. Without Leonard, she's "nothing".

I've weighed in on this issue before. But I will reiterate for Gingermop. Anjani has a gorgeous voice and great technical ability. But Blue Alert turned out to be a monumental bore. Her voice is so perfectly honeyed on this album that I can't listen to it all the way through without an insulin spike. I think she needs someone else other than Leonard handling her career.

I think a great way to resolve some of the issues that have arisen in this thread would be for someone to present me with two tickets to see Anjani and Leonard in New York. I could then show that I would actually be prepared to fly to New York for the concert, and I could give the other ticket to Gina who would no doubt discover that Ajani is a great live artist.

John - splendid idea! Then we could hang around to try see Leonard, because that would be the real reason for going, right?

But seriously. If Anjani was doing a "normal", non-promotional concert in the UK, and I had the time and money, I would go, whether Leonard was there or not. If Leonard was doing a concert anywhere in the world, and I didn't have time or money, I'd still go. That probably articulates my different feelings between the two (though influenced by the fact I've never seen Leonard live).

I haven't met Anjani, yet. I met Leonard in the mid-70s when I took a train to see him perform on two consecutive nights at a small venue in downtown Chicago called The Quiet Knight. It was on the second floor, a black-walled room up narrow stairs, a small stage in the corner and small tables. Smoke and bits of beauty were everywhere. It seemed the ideal for his songs.

I met him afterward, as he greeted and spoke with fans in the small anteway off his dressing room. With my love of B&W photography and pictures I'd seen of him in my songbooks, I wanted a photo of us together in B&W. The stranger who agreed to take the picture, however, forgot to remove the lens cover. So, that photo was not to be. I don't need the photo, however, to remember the way he was so welcoming and gracious. Would I like the opportunity to get another one, though? Yes... even though I no longer remotely resemble that woman so many years ago .

When I speak about their thoughts and feelings, it's because I've read and listened to them speak about them themselves, as well as to others, who have been around either or both of them. Since verbal and non-verbal cues can speak volumes, I make my own observations from observation. I don't have a fast-track path to what they think and feel. I try to make my comments in a context that makes it clear that these are my own observations, rather than first-hand knowledge.

It would be wonderful if you and John could attend at Joe's Pub. I've just finished playing two songs from "Blue Alert" over the phone to my friend who will be attending the Glass performance in Toronto... and she responded, "OH... I love her voice!" I agreed, of course, as I do, too.

(I wasn't around for Rebecca, but do remember her writing about who was in and out of Leonard's will. Not a particularly good/rational thing to be speculating about on a public forum. But that is just my opinion.)

Actually, it wasn't my camera, Laurie. It was a borrowed 35 mm... and I wasn't really familiar with 35 mm's at the time. I have no problem owning things of this nature. Don't think I haven't kicked myself as much as anyone could for my own part in it... however, since he so enthusiastically volunteered with such an attitude of familiarity with this type camera [when I rather naturally asked, "Do you know how to work one of these?"], I've always considered it as his having forgotten to do that, no doubt in the excitement of the moment. When it comes to actually assigning 'blame' and the feelings associated with that, I still direct that and those to myself. There have been no grudges held against this guy... I've only wished for another opportunity.

I'm guessing I've been forgiven for that speculation [whatever it was... I know that some things get quite hyperbolically dramatized at times]. Forgiveness is such a lovely quality... one which seems to be an inherent and integral part of Leonard's nature and one which we all would do well to emulate.
