Fljots,

And we are that grasshopper, too! We have a mouth and eyes, a sense of smell, we wash ourselves. And there is something inherent in the grasshopper and us. We are related both spiritually and biologically. We 'know' Life, we sense danger and safety. We also, somewhere along the line, are related to the grasshopper. We have a common ancestor way back.

I don't pay too much credence to our past gods invented to instill fear and for particular ritual; hunting for instance. But I do heed the reality of 'something'. It is implied in Creation, it is implied in the ecstacy of Life. When I dance, 'it' is in me, when I sing, I feel 'it' too. And, I think, when I make love I feel 'it' most. The vigour of Life and Love - and we have a responsibility to 'it'. We owe 'it' care and compassion. We must try our darndest to do our best, but not get lost in repentance.

The choice is ours; not the grasshopper's

In peace

HI Fljots...dale :)

Don't meet to many people who have read all the 5 of the hitchhikers guide books but in the Complete Guide there is an added short story making the whole series actually 5 1/4 books. The longest running trilogy ever. This is where Marvin the manically depressed robot is picked up by the white robots of the planet Kricket and found Marvin to be useful as he has the brain the size of a planet. Yet ofcoarse Marvin is so bored of his simple duties that he plugs himself into the main frame of the Mother ships computer and depresses it so bad that it commits suicide thus saving the entire universe from total destruction. So Douglas Adams point is this: The most powerful and destructive force in the universe is Depression.

Note my emphasis in your post! In that, we are fully and totally in agreement. If the 'it' is life itself.

All living things have as much right to life and the enjoyment of their life as we do. More, in fact, because they are so short-lived, most of them. WE are ephemeral; how much more ephemeral the life of a grasshopper :) or a May-fly; how much more we should care for it and protect it, so far as lies within our power? Of course we can't protect the May-fly from becoming a fish dinner or a grasshopper from becoming a bird's dinner...
And, for me, without any need whatever for a creator! :P

And yes - I DO understand and appreciate your analogy!

Just following along on this spiritual thread, a book fell into my hands some time ago entitled The Translucent Revolution by Arjuna Ardagh. I liked his ideas although I thought many would object to his interpretation of the word translucent to describe so many different things--eg. ecologically aware businesses, education systems that respect the rights of children, etc etc. However when I came to the chapter that described Leonard Cohen as the #1 translucent musician of our times--I had to sit up and take notice. An american spiritual writer who liked leonard cohen!!! As much as me!!

I like that! "Leonard Cohen as the #1 translucent musician of our times"

Heh! I bet Leonard would laugh, though!

I always feel like a bear with mittens on when I try to talk or argue about the some 248 practicing faiths active today. I have observed that the flocks are jealously guarded by their elders. They want the flocks to feel like only they have and control the light to shine into the dark corners. It amuses me to think that Leonard Cohen is like a kitchen light that comes on that disturbs and scatters.

On a softer note: Leonard Cohen's light shines warmly into all these worlds. 8)

I guess Leonard Cohen would be one of the translucent spiritual musicians going around today! I wonder if he's willing to take part in a "Hand Holding" experiment of mine. Suppose everyone who knows of this scheme holds hands with someone else (or with themselves) for 10 minutes at 3pm on Sunday the 10th of September, 2006. What would this prove? Much. People power, as it would be in the name of world peace. It would break down the walls between the 248 practicing faiths today, especially their elders' positions. Humanity would be closer to One. It can be performed in silence, song, with poetry or just general talk. A prayer could be read.

The energy built would go some way in 'bridging the gap' between G-d and us. Yes Fljots, I believe in G-d, He's ('its') in the energy in my screen, the glint in a dove's eye, in my car.

If anyone really knew me, you wouldn't wonder of the "Hand Holding" idea. I believe mass movement gets the wealth and power at the top thinking. C'mon let's do it. Sunday, September the 10th, 3pm!

In hope

I think you and I may have a similar outlook on life!

AND we both like HitchHikers and Moody Blues! (As well as LC, of course. :) )

Bingo! :D

Heh! You know I'm not a believer, Boss!

But - leaving out the prayer bit - your idea is not a bad one. Many people acting in unity is a powerful force.

But it needs to be a public thing, not private, to get the "wealth and power at the top thinking". They will be totally unaware of anything done in private. (Yes, I sortof have a vague suspicion that the 'universe' might possibly be on our side if we give it a chance  I've been infected by a somewhat flaky daughter, lol!)

But authority only pays attention to huge, noisy mass demos - and even then not much! It has to go on for a long time with a good proportion of the population backing it up with letters, petitions, e-mails, and such. Mabe even a bit of chaining to fences and throwing of self under horses (cars today).

And even then it stands a good chance of not working. Witness the huge unrest about the invasion of Iraq, and how much notice Blair took of it.

Boss I do not know what time zone you're in. This Sunday I'll make a pot of extra thick brown nappy tea and TOAST (pun) peace.. also you're right where attention goes energy flows.

Fljots...dale :D Bingo..!!! (Wodehouse reference ?)

I do have a thing for British literature :D I've always felt that all roads lead back to Spike Milligan.

p.s. Just had to add that around here somewhere I have a picture of Spike modeling one of his new lines of thistle lined underwear. And now that Spike has passed away I'm sure that he got that court jester job that God had posted.

Switz,

Not this Sunday, Sunday the 10th at 3pm. You know one could be daring and maybe fast and not buy any consumer goods on that day... One could really screw in the screws of the multi-nationals. Why? To let 'em know who's boss 8). And secondly, as a precursor of things to come. "Power to the People, right on" sang John Lennon. He was right...

The 10th I'll be on Mount Rainer. Been walking and riding my bike for the last few weeks trying to get some lungs. The days of doing a couple of situps and pushups are long over  Just don't want to hear "Get out of the way old man" as teenagers hike by me....

Probably the best I can do that day is be a teacher or be someone that listens. The one thing I like to instill in young people is how powerful poetry is before they find out that I'm crazier than an outhouse rat........

Switzy, Switzy,

Just think. On Mount Rainer, 3pm you stop your riding and walking and clasp your hands together. 10 minutes is all it will take. You will be partaking in something bigger than yourself. Wholism. At that time you will be at One with others. Not by watching satellite television, but simply by clasping your hands together. Talk to yourself, to the mountain. Sunday, the 10th of September at 3pm.

Cool bananas
