I take your point For YourSmile but thereare a number of differences.
Mozart is definitely (correct me if I'm wrong) dead. His music was written for interpretation and performance and in a totally different genre.
And, yes, of course, Leonard's songs may be interpreted by others and have been,often ctunningly.
I suppose my problem is with the plethora of TRIBUTE concerts that are often not that at all but rather a hasty attempt to jump on a passing bandwagon.
I may be judging people harshly - if so I'm sorry. It was just a thought!
And obviously not one that has been met with much agreement yet
I hope you enjoy your evening.

I agree with you, Red Poppy. There's no single cover which can come close to the Leonard's originals. I have not seen the film (Lunson's) yet, but I can understand why so many critics are giving bad comments: it's interesting how they're all (all who're giving bad reviews) greeting Leonard's parts (interviews), and commenting against tribute covers' parts. I guess people wanna see Leonard Cohen in the film which is presented and advertised as the film about Leonard Cohen. But it's film about the tribute to Leonard Cohen. Tiny but important difference.

Catalunya Radio's news; the tickets of concert already are exhausted. :lol:

If the point is to compare I agree with you in preferring Leonard's original music. Let's wait for the tour of 2007, I am a believer, too.

But for the present, I am very exited, today.. but ... this is not comparable, this concert is not a substitute, in itself is an important event.

And here we don't have anybody trying to jump to on a passing bandwagon. They are magnificent musicians with an own work in their suitcase. Maybe the problem is the ignorance, or distrust, of the artists who exist in spite of being far from the Anglo-Saxon navel.

Joe Cocker's "First we take Manhattan" is a pretty good cover.
And it's actually the only one (so far) that I like much.

Oh, and Madeleine Peyroux's jazzist "Dance me to the end of love " is not bad.

Oh! What interpretation! She was Suzanne, her mystery, her magic, her half crazy, she was in front of me, dressed in white, barefoot. I remained absolutely captivated. Friends, I assure you that it seemed a spectre. Great!!

It would be long to describe as this concert continued, very interesting, different debatable or surprising covers. In the international area sensational "A Thousand Kisses Deep" of Browne and Cale's "Alexandra Leaving" (I moved again) and his already known "Hallelujah" cover and the Anjani Thomas's elegance.

It was an unforgettable night.

At the end of the concert, my dared friends and wife dragged me to the backstage. There was Perla Batalla who received us with a great fondness. We speak about Hydra, about her stays in Spain, always in tour with Cohen. She was wonderful.

I'm sure it was a concert to remember!! Did you notice if it was filmed (for TV or DVD release??)

Yes, Jarkko, the concert was filmed, there is a project to release a CD or DVD.

About covers. In opinion I don't understand why we have to compare, they are different works. Personally I like the Cohen's covers. I collect them. Now I delight with the CD "Bird On the Wire" of Perla Batalla. I hope that we could enjoy this "Acordes con LC" in DVD or CD and enjoy new covers that I remember wonderful.

I am thinking about remembering that Tom wrote, time ago, he was thinking that Jeft Buckley dispossessed to Cohen his Hallelujah. Correct me if I am wrong. I believe that Tom is a magnificent defender of Leonard's work :wink: :lol: . For me Hallelujah is a Cohen's song, forever, and Jeft Buckley did a great cover. I do not see the problem.

Thanks FYS for the report -- I agree that there is plenty of room in the world to enjoy both good covers and original takes of songs we love !

Perla is definitely a charmer and your pics are wonderful.

What was crowd reaction to Anjani? Hope they recognized her beauty and grace.

Do you get to see any of the other concerts in Spain?

Ahhhh.... beautiful as ever 8) ~ barefoot Perla :D . Thank you from me, too, FYS, for your great report and splendid photos!!! I understand what you mean about how captivating Perla is... I felt the same about both her and Julie, when I saw them in New York. Your seat couldn't have been any better! I, too, want to know about your and others' feelings about Anjani and her performances. Was that "Thanks for the Dance" that she sang? Ohhhh.... I so look forward to seeing her in person 8) !

Beautiful memories for you... with or without the photos, yet especially with them :D ! Did anyone in your group become believers :wink: ?

Algunos de los riesgos de usar los nuevos medios de comunicación en periodismo son difíciles de esquivar, y en este caso quedan en flagrante evidencia. Leonard Cohen se prestó a contestar una serie de preguntas que le enviamos por correo electrónico, cosa bastante común en nuestros días, pero en lugar de responder de manera convencional decidió hacerlo, en la mayoría de los casos, citando sus propios poemas. Puede que los cinco años que pasó en el monasterio budista de Mount Baldy, en Los Ángeles (Estados Unidos) la década pasada lo hayan llevado a esta decisión casi ascética, de anulación del yo presente. O quizá la desgana lo ha vencido, y no quiere ya pensar demasiado sobre el pasado, la poesía y la música.

A sus 71 años, este cantautor y poeta canadiense, enigmático y fascinante, mujeriego y solitario, que ha sabido mantener su popularidad desde los años sesenta y que podría ser el segundo más influyente en el género, después de Bob Dylan, vuelve a la actualidad por varias razones. Se cumple medio siglo de la publicación de su primer poemario, Let us compare mythologies (Comparemos mitologías, Visor), y con ese motivo se le van a hacer varios conciertos de homenaje en España, con la participación de músicos tan dispares como Enrique Morente, Nacho Vegas, Luis Eduardo Aute y Luz Casal, a los que se sumarán John Cale y Jackson Browne. Por otra parte, en octubre se publicará en España Libro del anhelos (Lumen), escrito en el monasterio budista californiano.

PREGUNTA. Hace cincuenta años publicó el poemario Comparemos mitologías. ¿Cómo se siente ahora respecto a aquellos poemas? ¿Se reconoce todavía en ellos?

P. Su nuevo libro de poemas, El libro de los anhelos, incluirá buena parte de los que escribió en el monasterio budista de Mount Baldy. ¿Están influidos de alguna manera por la poesía oriental? ¿Qué podría decirnos de ellos?

R. Cuando era joven mis amigos y yo leíamos y admirábamos a los antiguos poetas chinos. Nuestras ideas sobre el amor y la amistad, sobre el vino y la distancia, sobre la poesía misma, estuvieron muy influidos por esos antiguos cantos. Mucho más adelante, durante los años en los que practiqué el budismo zen como un monje, bajo la guía de mi maestro Kyozan Joshu Roshi, estudié a diario los emocionantes sermones de Lin Chi (Rinzai). Supongo que resulta comprensible, querido lector, cuán privilegiado me sentí de ser capaz de atisbar, aunque sea por un momento, y con tan magras credenciales, en las cercanías de su tradición.

P. ¿Sentía más deseos de escribir que de hacer música durante el periodo que pasó en el monasterio?

R. Había poco tiempo para ninguna de las dos cosas. Yo era el cocinero. Me levantaba a las 2.30 de la madrugada. Lo que más me apetecía era dormir.

P. Díganos en qué consiste ser Leonard Cohen, cantante de música popular.

R. Miles

It is a special interview for e-mail. Cohen answers with verses of songs and poems. For who don't understand Spanish, the title is: "I hear present music with great pleasure, without recognizing anybody" It corresponds at the end of the interview:

Q: Do you listen to contemporary music? What do you prefer?

About some questions; we cannot follow anymore concerts, it's a pity. Anjani was presented as sentimental couple of Cohen, received with a hot applause, her songs were listened with a great silence and, finally, he was cheered. We liked listen more, but in this type of concerts it is not any more time. Of course it was recognized her beauty, grace and her music.

In the backstage we did not try to see Anjani, we did not want to bother anybody. The welcome of Perla Batalla was sufficient for us we left fully happy :lol: . (Was Perla protecting the others of the troublesome fans? :shock: :oops: ) Jackson Browne seemed to be accessible and we could interchange a greeting and did some photos.

With Perla we speak about LC Files, she asked us if we would go to Berlin, we remind the DVD New York 2004 Event (sincerely she surprised me, she did not ask for Lizzy :lol: :lol: ).

We are sorry that Julie Cristensen was not with us. I also feel a great admiration for Julie, her voice in Joan of Arc it's sublime.

No! I cannot speak about the religion of my friends. My wife likes the music and poetry the Cohen's and she saw him in concert, she has lived for 25 years closely with his work. Others already knew him, we met us thanks to this forum, from the Concert Tribute that Jorcx organized in Barcelona on September 21, 2004. It's a great luck share with them the Cohen's world.
