Happy Birthday Mister C.
(I am not normally in the habit of wishing popstar-philosophers on their birthday but I'll make an exception this time

Leonard,
May the road rise up to meet you and may the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine softly on your face and the rain lightly in your field.
Breithla shona duit.
Kieron
Ps: Any chance of you visiting the boxing ring again?

It feels like you have been a constant companion over the last 35 years, in good times and not so good. Thank you for being there.

This seems like the ideal moment to thank you for all the great songs and poetry you gave to the world.
And of course:
Happy birthday to you, Leonard!
I hope you keep giving us lots of joy for many years to come.
Take good care of yourself,
Maarten

Dear Leonard Cohen,
Luckily, it is out of character for you to have a happy birthday; that is, to stand there before icky birthday cake simulating childish glee, opening unwanted presents for which you must thank unwanted guests, after which you are doomed to reading the clichés of fandom on an Internet sceen, to which you are obligated to reply with the equally tedious clichés of stardom. Then may you not have a happy birthday. May you have a serious birthday.
May the blackbird of seriousness poop all over your birthday cake.

It almost feels like I'm trying to pick an "individual" greeting for my answering machine. First few years it's the snippet of a song, or bit of a poem, or a celebrity voice. Then the kids get to put their two cents in and no one can really tell when to speak up and actually leave the message. Well, now, many years down the road, I'm not quite satisfied, but have settled for the plain old anonymous voice..."At the tone....beep...
"Happy Birthday Leonard."
Wishing you many more "beeps" in the future. I've finally figured out it's not the caller's greeting the matters, it's that little bitty beep and it's the same beep for us all. Well, beep beep baby and much love.
