Do pardon me for being an ignorant ruffian, but to what extent do they speak English there? My Greek is meek and my French will be of little help, I fear.

If any of you Hydra 2011 attendees want to befriend me on Facebook to maybe get to know each other a little better prior to the event please feel free to do so. Simply search for lcohenfan on Facebook and I should be at the top of the list. Not being creepy but merely trying to maybe get to know a few before I get there and know noone.

Be well!
Todd

KjeXXXer,
The economy of Hydra is nowadays more os less based on tourism. This means that most of the local people that you''ll need to talk to speak English. This has never been a problem.

Hydra travelers

I am asking for info and help...My time is flexible ( the only perk in retirement ) and I would like to be in Hydra when most of
the group will be there......before and after the meet.
Also would like to stay in hotel or wherever with other Cohenites ( Cohenistas, dubbed by a friend ).
Traveling from US alone and would be great to find someone to travel with ( my son, who travels, suggests my leaving from Florida to Athens by way of N.Y.? )
Don't know yet, if there will be many, from US.
I welcome help from any Continent.....
I know, it is early times, but please people, if you have plans or thoughts....let me know...I am open to all suggestions...and If I can be of any help ( big joke ) to
anyone. let me know....
When I went to Florence, there was this wonderful person, you know, as Gallina ( forgive me, do not be embarassed my friend ). who welcomed a total stranger with
open arms...and was my friend, my angel ( if I believed ), my guide..She began a wonderful experience for me...This is a true Leonard Cohen thing! and she is
forever my friend!

Jarkko made a sugestion, regarding a group......renting a house....any thoughts?.........jeanne

I am not good at navigating facebook, but I will try.... getting to know new people, to me, is always treat.. jeanne

There are many small pensions/guest houses that offer nice simple ensuite rooms with or without breakfast. It is probably more convenient to stay at one that is close to the harbour where everyone meets. Houses for rent are often further up the steep hills and tend to be more expensive. It can be quite a hike up and down those glassy polished steps!
Hydra town is a very small place. It's impossible to walk around the harbour and not see other Cohenites when they are there. Much easier than trying to meet people in Ceasars Palace

Happy New Year to all!

I was on Hydra on June 2010 (the crisis on Greece had started already)
but there wasn't any difference in the prices from the previous year.

Maybe this year as the crisis will deepen they will offer better prices
for accommodation or food but as Sophia said the VAT has risen so
all goods (in the supermarket for example) will be more expensive.
Probably the Flying Dolphin tickets will also be a bit more expensive
(last year it was 50€ the return ticket to Piraeus).

Keep also in mind that Hydra in general is an expensive place to be
but you will never regret it!

If you need any other information, just ask.

I believe that many of the 2009 participants
will agree that the cinema night where we played
a Leonard's concert was one of the highlights
of the meetup.

It would be nice if we could use the cinema again this year
(I can contact the cinema club people on Hydra) but what to
show this time?

Maybe a Leonard Cohen documentary?
Something like Armelle Brusq's 1996 Film at Mt Baldy Zen Center
or "Leonard Cohen's Lonesome Heroes"?

As anneporter said the old Bill's Bar is not the Pirate Bar
but indeed the Pirate has a connection with Leonard Cohen
as this is the bar where he likes to go when he is on the island.

And it was at the Pirate Bar where I once spent some time with
Bill Cunliffe the owner of the good old "Bill's Bar" :-)

Margaret.....

The steps would probably do me in!.....extremely helpful information for me.

Of the other options....any particular place that
you would recommend ? for one who feels young, but body and age seem to tell another story.
I don't need fancy....just a clean comfortable place to sleep...and breakfast sounds good.

Thanks, so much.....I really welcome, and appreciate your help...................jeanne
