Thank you so much for your message, Leonard.
I was deeply touched. And yes, I too had tears in my eyes.
Thank you Jarkko for posting the message.

Dear Jarkko,
It is so very kind of our friends to remember my birthday.
Please thank them for their warm good wishes and their encouragement.
I cannot put into words how much it means to me.
Love and Blessings,
Leo
What a beautiful gesture. Thank you Leonard and Jarkko for sharing. Not sure if the tears in my eyes are from reading this or from Hallelujah from Songs From The Road which I am currently listening to and it is seldom that Hallelujah doesn't bring tears to my eyes. What perfect timing for me to read this.

This message is typical of Leonard's gratitude. Back in the 90s when he was on Mount Baldy (before the internet and when he had more time on his hands) I wrote to him with a specific question. He responded promptly to this, with a brief typed letter and his signature in ink. I decided to thank him for this, but waited at least six months till nearer his birthday, and sent my message of thanks on a birthday card. To my complete astonishment, he then wrote back to me saying "Dear John, Thank you for your kind words. Thank you for remembering my birthday".

When I sat down to write my birthday greeting to Leonard, I had the same exact thought (as I'm sure many of us did!) - "how can I possibly put my feelings for Leonard Cohen into words - it's just too huge!!" But then I thought, "Leonard has put his whole heart & soul, & has worked so incredibly hard, & with such care, to put his feelings, & thereby, all of our feelings - the feelings of all humankind - into words - so I have to try. . ."
And once again, Leonard Cohen has given us his heart, and thereby, given voice to all of our feelings, in that beautiful message which he so lovingly took the time to write.
Thank you, Leonard, for the great kindness of your unfathomable heart.
And thank you, Jarkko, for making sure that we all saw this.

Thanks, Jarkko, for re-posting this.
And it is so endearing that Leonard is ever mindful
even of such little gestures as e-birthday greetings. Thank you.
