Thank you for giving us a taste of the new song. I could not catch the words too well, so it would be nice if anyone got them, Are they words from a poem already written or a new poem?

The lyrics have a few good twists... this is what I can gather from the video:

I love the prisoner simile, and I like it, but it is missing the B section from his typical writing style. Cohen (as most songwriters) tends to write in an "AABA" style, where the melody repeats twice, then changes, and resolves back to the original. In this case, he's just holding on to that one idea.

I really loved the song: thanks again, Albert, filming it so expertly and posting it so speedily.
And thanks, Raindog1980, for the lyrics: I think you're correct about the second line of the last verse. That's what I heard on my second listen.
The song feels to me as though it's still taking shape. The arrangement seemed much more spare and stripped down than the other song arrangements on this tour. There also seemed to be more straight repetition of the lines than is usual: that may be because of the bluesy nature of the song...

LisaLCfan, you made me laugh, thank you; I guess you are right, "Him" would seem most apropos. There were basically two thoughts behind my array of pronouns. I didn't want to offend any lingering feminists who might feel that assuming that God would be a "Him" would be sexist. Also, Mr. Cohen seems so all-encompassing in his brilliance that I believe we could see him (or Him!) as a kind of embodiment of all of humanity, including all genders or pronouns.

In fact, I was just recently thinking about this: while Leonard's persona is very masculine, he is clearly totally in touch with his female side, which is probably (at least partially) why he is able to create such exquisite art. And, kind of ironically, the great communication that he has so skillfully developed with his female side, makes him even more masculine. I think this is probably true of any great artist, whether the artist is male or female, that the greatest art comes out of this interaction between the anima & animus (as Jung would call it).

Anyway, your wit is appreciated!

Just wanted to add, I did not mean anything derogatory with the phrase "lingering feminist" - I'm sure I would be one of them, in my way. Just meant to say that, in my perspective, if there is something that one would call God, I don't think it would have any gender, or it would include all genders.

Somewhere - someplace - I mentioned that Diana. Could this world premiere of a brand new Leonard Cohen song - a live performance - constitute one of those dots? Nothing important - of course ...

Or - maybe Jarkko was just as pleasantly surprised as the rest of us. But it definitely is dot-worthy I think. IMHO. Haha!
