Simple, Paula. What evidence do you have that a tree falling down makes any sound, when there is no one there to hear it? Quantum mechanics poses similar problems of observing something without affecting what is being observed, and the other way round too (e.g. Schrodinger's Cat).

Hydriot surely the evidence is that if you are there to hear it it does make a sound. It should be Irrelevant to the outcome whether anyone is there or not.

I don't understand the question or why that sort of question even exists. To my simple mind if something makes a noise it will still make that noise regardless of who is listening or am I being really stupid.

It is like saying if we are unaware of somebody's suffering, does it exist or if a person is deaf because they can't hear is there still noise.

i am now confusing myself

You're not deaf with tinnitus. You can still hear, only with a constant, whistling or ringing in the ear.

"Are you couging alone?" Minna it definitely loses something in the transalation.

As far as I am aware tinnitus is not deafness it is damage to the auditory system but you are not deaf. Still a horrible condition to have to live with. Snap Kwills

Hm... I didn't quite get Kwills' message... Or I don't know if he (she?) got mine... I meant that I have a friend who's actually, really, truly deaf. However, she's got this problem of tinnitus. Which is quite strange... I mean you wouldn't think a deaf person could suffer from it, but live and learn...

And I do know (if someone didn't understand me earlier?) that tinnitus is not the same as deafness. I guess these short messages don't always capture the full intentions and meanings one tries to convey. ; )
Hi Minna,
Just to say that I agree with you things do get a bit confused with these short messages!I hadn't realized that she was truly deaf when you wrote earlier. My father had tinnitus and it used to drive him mad at times.I wonder if your friend was deaf from birth or from later in life?
By the way,my name is Karen,I'm a she!

Hi Minna I think sometimes the side effects of some cancer treatments can affect the hair in the ears which could possibly be a reason for the tinnitus. Chemo can make hair fall out all over the body and it can also affect the hair in the ear (I think). It seems very unfair to be deaf but still get tinnitus.

Karen it would drive me totally potty. I think they try and mask the ringing sound with something else to try and ease it. A lot of musicans suffer with it because of the damage caused by loud speakers etc
