Yes I remember that. I googled something to the effect of 'leonard cohen concert password new york' at the time to see how safe the password were, out of interest, and came across this blog. the poster, siobhan, posted the password and when asked why she had done so, seemed to justify it with her resentment of the fact that this forum has a large contingent of european members and that this was a US gig. for the US-ers.

there is nothing stopping people becoming a member of this forum if they are fans (or even if they are not) and it is itself easily google-able so the argument for broadening the scope of those who receive the password seems unjustifiable. If people want it, they can have it. They dont even need to try that hard. mmm it annoyed me.

I apologise in advance if I sound a little "tetchy" in my response.

You have joined the forum and have asked for information in a thread called "Pre-sale information". That should give you a BIG clue. If you go back to the beginning (page 1) and read this thread and any other threads in the pre-sale section of the forum (you have to be logged in to see them but you are already here so that should not be a problem) you will find out what you have to do to get your tickets. If anyone else has more information than you, it is only because we have done the work that you have not.

KC presale went fine aside from the usual ticketmaster extortion.

Ain't that the truth! Typical sTicketbastards !
I got fabulous seats in the cheap section. But only after about 10 attempts. It kept giving me the 2 seats right by the left wall on top! I am sometimes leery of these Fan Club pre-sales as they always put out the disclaimer of "We don't guarantee the BEST seats, we just guarantee a seat." But I do have to say I do like this new way of selling these tix- that is that you have to pick them up at Will Call. I think this discourages the ticket brokers & scalpers..but I'm sure even they will find a way to overcome this.

But for those of us who don't get to go to very many concerts for now this will work fine.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO excited to see Lenny Cohen FINALLY. I have listened to him for years and always thought that this was one performer I would never get to see (because he doesn't play in the USA and I don't travel to Europe.)

Thanks to all who run this site. You did a fabulous job of organizing this for Lenny. I hope you all get compensated in some small (or big) way. Bravo to you all.

And to the people here who make the stupid posts, asking or demanding the mods here to tell them how to buy tix on a pre-sale: Some of your posts really made me laugh. The old saying proves true of "you can't write comedy like this." I loved the mods and some members' responses here. You guys kept your cool better than I would have!

Keep up the good work and God Bless!

Pre-sales - general

Post by Mabeanie1 »

With apologies to the new fans who are genuine Leonard Cohen fans who have only just found their way here, there does seem to be an enormous number of new fans with one post whose first words are "I'm a big fan, how do I get pre-sale tickets?" I am beginning to wonder just how many of them are scalpers, or would be scalpers.

The Will Call restriction makes it difficult for scalpers but not impossible because all they have to do is to arrange to meet their customers at the venue. Should the pre-sales should be restricted to people who were members of the forum on, say, the date the tour was announced (if such a thing is technically possible of course)? The demand for San Jose tickets is going to be absolutely enormous and I fear a lot of established fans may not get the tickets they are hoping for because of the extra volume of pre-sale purchases, especially as a number of the top price seats will presumably be held for the various VIP packages.

In the meantime, I don't feel we should be unduly helpful to the new posters asking for pre-sale information. If they are posting, they will be able to see the pre-sale threads and it's not rocket science to click on the thread and read Jarkko's very clear and helpful instructions. Let them do the work for themselves!

I know we were all new once but hand on heart, I can honestly say that I have diligently read the sections of the forum I am most interested in.

Mean spirited? Maybe, or maybe I'm just having a bad day .... I will freely admit that patience is not my strongest point!

Whoever originally transferred the password from the forum to other sites ought to be ashamed of themselves. Jarkko's request not to post the password anywhere else could not have been clearer.

Wendy,

You are right, of course; but to me it looks like normal behavior for a crowd of this size. Human nature being what it is, there is a certain percentage of the population that will barge in, not bother to read old posts and request (or demand) assistance. Much like the weather, we can talk about it all we want but we cannot change it.
The only way to mitigate the situation is to further restrict access to the password (as you suggested). This will benefit existing members but we will lose the wave to new registrations that the pre-sale brings with it.

Don't stress about scalpers, unless you have to resort to them to get your seats. As a member of this site, I don't think you will have that problem. I'm not planning to sell my tix, but if some schmuck wants to buy my 5th row seats in KC for $2000 each, I might be tempted and turn a $560 investment into a trip to Europe or India. Who does a transaction such as this harm?
LC got his money.
The schmuck gets to see the show.
I don't get to see the show, but get a free vacation.

Tim,

Welcome to the forum!
Scalpers become a problem when they buy many or most of the tickets and leave us with no choice other than to buy from them. Luckily, it looks like it is not happening for the upcoming US concerts quite yet. (and btw, I'm not selling my front row pre-sale tickets, not for $2,000 and not for $20,000. The only time I would sell them is if I was unable to attend and then, it would be for face value).

I feel very much like the original poster, but have stopped myself from posting something similar a couple of times. Unfortunately, Tim doesn't sound too concerned with how his words will be taken...

I think my words are pretty clear.
1) Don't use a scalper unless it's the only way you can see a once in a lifetime show, and you can afford the price.
2) If someone offers you money for your tickets, it's your right to sell them.

I don't condone speculators who buy tickets with the sole intent of re-selling them. It's guys like that who caused gas prices to skyrocket last summer.

There are measures being employed these days that can virtually eliminate scalping. But they can cause problems for people trying to attend shows.

Tom Waits' shows last summer are an example. Transactions were limted to 2/credit card. All tickets were will call - no mailings. At the will call window you had to show a picture ID and the credit card used to buy the tickets. Now here's the sticky part. If you bought 2 tickets, at time of purchase you had to give the name of the other person, whose ID was also checked at will call. If your friend got sick or backed out, you stood a good chance of getting stuck with the extra ticket.
In this system (which goes too far for my taste) , the only way for a scalper to do biz was to actually go to the show with his customer. Not a comfortable situation for a scalper.

I cannot find that post on the FB page anymore, but I forwarded this thread to Leonard Cohen's Office so let's hope something can be done.

Tim - the scalpers found it pretty easy to get round the restrictions for the Tom Waits' shows I'm afraid. It just took more organising. They worked in pairs and sold one ticket in each pair on eBay or wherever before the deadline for notifying Ticketmaster of the second name. The "customer" bought one ticket in each pair and made arrangements with the scalper to meet inside the venue and swap seats so they had a pair of seats together. The scalper & his partner could then leave if they didn't want to see the show themselves having made a tidy profit.

eBay was full of these deals in the 2 week or whatever window between on sale day and the deadline for giving names.
