Does anyone know why Sony is seeking to prevent Cohen fans from seeing this DVD? How does it interfere with their profits? Have they been paid for the songs used in the film whose rights they own or license ?

Correct me if I'm wrong - but hasn't the price on these gone up since yesterday?

I had an e-mail yesterday from HMV (www.hmv.com) to say that my pre-ordered DVD is already in the post. Price was £13.99, incl UK P&P.

That's good news, Wendy.
Play.com also have it at £14.99, as do Amazon.co.uk

No bother getting "Bird on a Wire" in Ireland; An Post just delivered mine in 2 days from Classical.ie , who provide the excellent Music Box at the National Concert Hall. No postage charge in Ireland, so at €19.99 it's a little cheaper than Amazon or LC Cafe.

No problem for me either. Bought mine in Tower Records for €19.99. On another topic, as to the reason why Sony may be trying to discourage the sale of this DVD, it is possible that with their own DVD (Songs from the Road) being released next week they may be trying to remove the competition. Remember that in advance of Live in London Cohen's Glastonbury concert was one of the few, if not the only one, for which permission was refused for broadcast by the BBC. (They obviously have no faith in Cohen's hard core fan base which will devour everything he issues)

The Leonardcohencafe DVDs are autographed by Tony Palmer, thus the premium. This LCcafe guy is a wonderful person, very friendly and helpful!

For any other Canadians who might be curious, I received an email from the Canadian distributor of this film, and he assured me that it will be available in Canada on September 14, at all the usual places (if you want to wait!).

the price of the dvd on LCcafe has never changed. I charge a higher price on Ebay because of the 10% charge by Ebay. My dvds are signed by Tony Palmer and incur additional costs. Tony is a very busy man and it is not easy to tie him down for a couple of hours to sign the dvds. Remember, we had to break the protective cover of each dvd, sign the cover of the dvd, and then put a new sealed cover on each dvd to protect it. This all takes a lot of time when you remember that he signed 100 copies for me. A large number of my other items are also signed and they are aimed at fans who collect this kind of memorabilia. Other fans who are not interested in signatures will obviously go to Amazon, or one of the other retailers who are aimed at the mass market.

Sony are not after Tony because of the rights to the music. Tony and Steve Machat have full rights to everything on the dvd. Sony are also not concerned because they are bringing out a Songs from the Road dvd at the same time. For what it's worth, Tony's product is far superior and will easily outsell Songs from the Road. I can't really say why Sony are acting this way because I don't want to cause problems in case this ends up as a legal action.

I just ordered the DVD from Leonardcohencafe. It is nice to get a signed copy and I appreciate the extra work and care provided by LCcafe.

My guess was that Sony did not want any competition for Songs from the Road, but if this isn't the case I'm clueless for what the reason might be...

Neo, many thanks for the kind order. It will be despatched immediately. Sorry, but you understand that i would get in lots of trouble if i disclosed the reason for Sony trying to stop this dvd being sold

If anyone doesn't want a signed copy, then i suggest you try the following link. You will definitely get your copy at a reduced price to mine, but it will be unsigned and you will have to wait a few extra days:

bene449, of course I understand that you can't talk about this in public. It is tough for Tony Palmer having his product dropped from Amazon.com and I hope that many people will find out about the alternate ways to order the DVD. But Sony's and Amazon's tactics surely mean a drop in sales for the DVD.
And I doubt Sony would have gone all the extra miles to painstakenly restore the original film... :(

I don't understand what right Sony has to suppress Voiceprint/Tony's product if it is 100% legal. This is very mysterious. Well, waiting for the Christmas market with the dove of peace on the cover should do it some good.
