Dear friends,
I wish you all safe travels:-)
For those of you who travel on Monday 6th June, the metro will not be running between 5:30-16:00 due to a strike, so you can take X96 bus from the airport (that goes straight to Piraeus).
See you on Friday:-)
Sophia
Thanks Sophia,
I hope X96 is not on strike Monday.

Hi Lizzy.....
Thank you for your words....they are always kind....
I still find it hard to believe that I am really going!...Since finding the forum.....I have to admit
to... an almost magical journey....one.. that proves...that dreams can come true...simply
by following the sounds of Leonard......I guess... he is the magic!

Jeanne, (and all first timers to Hydra)
You will have no difficulty meeting forum members if you linger over a drink or snack, day or evening, at the Roloi bar which is on the harbour front at the opposite end from where the boats come in. It has been the traditional meeting place for a number of years.
Safe journey and enjoy your time on Hydra,
Margaret

....i don't wish to alarm folk but here's a tip just in the unlikelihood of any problems down in piraeus next week...last year i was lucky and just missed the national strikes one day and was able to catch my ferry and reach my destination trouble free.....the following day however everybody took to the streets of athens attacking banks and virtually closing down the whole city....although the ferries didn't go on strike the demonstrators blocked the port gates with the intention of preventing folk from catching their ferries...eventually the police and i think the army took control of the dock gates and would only allow through the gates passengers with proof that they had pre-booked their sailing...apparently all the morning ferries still left on time but with no or hardly any passengers on board...i'm sure everything is going to fine but if anything similiar happens again next week then don't forget to have your hydrofoil booking confirmation handy.....ta ken

Looking forward to finally visiting Hydra and getting to meet everyone in attendance. Susan and I will be arriving on the island at about 2:30 PM this Thursday (June 9). See you at Roloi often I am sure! Also looking forward to taking in daily hikes of many different lengths. Travel safely! Todd

Will that bank strike [June 9th] affect people's ability to get money from ATMs? Not sure how they exactly work, except that my attempt to get money from one in Germany wreaked financial havoc with the remainder of my trip.
I hope all goes well for everyone. As Margaret said, the Roloi is at the opposite end of the harbour of where you get off the boats. It's just before the curve begins to close back in to create the 'horseshoe' shape of the harbour, so the Roloi faces the harbour straight on, is a lovely view, and many hours will pass in pleasure there.
How much I wish I could go this year. Will be thinking of all of you. Enjoy every minute because you're sure enough going to miss it when you're gone.

Lizzy -
Thanks for the heads up on the bank strike. I just looked it up on the internet. I will clearly plan on getting some Euros in Atlanta prior to departure but will wait until Friday or so to buy more. Surely the banks will give me a better rate than the cambio on the airport.

You're welcome regarding the impending/planned bank strike, Todd. Actually, it was Wybe who mentioned it in a posting several ahead of mine, and I was just referencing it with my own questions

because it was quite traumatic when I found myself in dire straits. A couple of friends at the time were stellar in helping me out of that shocking dilemma

Hi Oblivion - I forgot if Naxos is a Greek guy or one of those modern drugs ... but you seem to enjoy it.
