'Thank you' is 'efharisto' which is one of the only 4 or 5 words you need to know on Hydra.

The most common phrase you will use on Hydra will be 'poso kani !!!!!! '
Don't forget to say it loud and in a very incredulous manner.

Believe me you will have no problems understanding the locals or making yourself understood to them.
Your only language problems will arise when you try to understand the jabbering conversations between the Liverpudlian and the Irish contingents.
Even Henning can't understand us and he speaks better English than any of us.

Ken,
I live within the English/Irish diaspora, for goodness sake, AND I can understand every word on Coronation Street so that's got to count for something!
Newfoundlanders in England usually get mistaken for Irish, and mainland Canadians can't understand us in what is nominally our own country so I think I'll be fine among the Brits and the Irish.

We'll soon see...

Ken: I'm sorry to tell you, but you made sense even to me... most of the time. The only person in the cohenite crowds that I simply couldn't understand was Joe; I'm still wondering what language he was speaking!

anneporter:

Don't worry, there will be Greeks
around to help you with the language.

Henning:

I am afraid you missed the punchline on that trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9d3tfYvG3g

After the guy with the megaphone takes the fine
he asks the policeman to give a push to his truck
that has broken down!

And you didn't mention that the protagonist
is one of the finest specimens of Greek beauty

Coronation Street is set in Manchester...and although only 30 miles down the road the Liverpudlian accent is a million miles away from the Manchester whine.
Also Liverpudlians have a completely different culture and way of life than Mancunians.
Someone once explained the difference between us as ...the only reason Mancs get out of bed in the morning is to count their money whereas the reason Liverpudlians get out of bed is so that they can go along and steal it :-)

I've been taking lessons from Jarkko on how to go about teasing everybody..so here is a little tease that you won't be able to solve until the meet up on Hydra............

Maybe that's because Joe is from Galway on the west coast of Ireland.
Galway folk are very special people with an accent all of their own.
As Joe is our very own (young) Leonard look-alike we have to take special care of him.

Sure! How should we do that? :-) (I never noticed the resemblance, but I guess I must have a few Mythos first)

I like your photo, Ken, but your lessons... from Jarkko... are not quite done. He's not that subtle. I have no idea what you want to say!

In case you want for some reasons to use the metro or you have planned to visit the centre of Athens first, you can also take the bus X94 from the airport to Ethniki Amyna metro train station and switch to the metro (blue line) there to continue to Athens or Piraeus. Also, you can take the bus X95 from the airport to Syntagma square and then continue with metro to Piraeus.

See you soon! :)
