"Community of the mind,
a Leonard valentine...
black ink with paper
parchment or lace...
we know where to find him,
we come to this place."
Ah, well. I never expected to be the winner, anyway
.
A very inclusive move, Michael
. Good on you
.
Love and best wishes to all the contestants,
Lizzy

oh, it's a dreadful idea. I knew that. I am not in the mood to be in charge here but I did tell Henning I would sort it and I would never wish to let down Big H.LaurieAK wrote:Michael~
Are you serious about multiple choice topics?
I think from a judging stand point this is not a good idea.
ok, I'll start a new post which will be a quick vote on the 2 subjects.

My thoughts on "Community of the Mind" include:
(1) Endorsement of Byron's and Michael's comments on it.
(2) The hub of how we have all accessed 'all-things-Leonard' [that are publicly available] since the inception of these communities of the mind... the Internet, the Newsgroup, the Chatroom, the Forum, this site, and the other sites devoted to Leonard.
(3) The Events and other meetings [group and personal ~ from commonly-shared interests to expanding one's personal life experience to friendship and marriage] are the "Community/ies of the Mind" made flesh ~ a 'formalization' of these "Community of the Mind" connections. Connections are originally made within the mind, however, as we each sit at our keyboards and screens.
(4) Leonard's own mind is integral to this Community... he's touched our perfect body with his mind.
(5) "Community of the Mind" is inclusive for all, no matter from which country, or particular set of celebrated holidays or traditions.
(6) There is no date stamp regarding "Use by" or shelf life for this topic.
(7) Through joining in on these communities, we have found ways to honour, be privy to, communicate with, Leonard's thoughts, ideas, songs, poetry, music, and life.
For me, I perceive this as a more flexible topic. With a valentine to Leonard, some men may find this expressing of love [albeit unconditional and agape vs. eros] a bit awkward... to a Leonardesque valentine, there may be a certain pressure felt to somehow imitate Leonard [i.e. what kind of Valentine message would he write?].
A few of my thoughts...

Perhaps, but then I don't recall "Winter" or "Seedy Hotel" being anything other than a name/a concept... the interpretation of what those 'mean' being individual. Alzheimer's Disease could be considered "Winter of the Mind;" a sense of alienation within oneself, or with the outside world could be considered "Winter of the Soul;" snow on the ground and coldness of the air could be considered "Winter's Weather." For me, neither of the above were self-explanatory. It's all in what one makes of the topic.
From my perspective [for me], a poem honouring the existence of a "Community of the Mind," such that people would, through it, become motivated enough to travel from all over the world, to gather at an Event to honour Leonard, seems very appropriate and fitting for inclusion in the booklet commemorating the Event itself. Attendance at the Event isn't prerequisite, but there still have to be reasons, for those who don't attend, yet are participants in the contest, to keep returning to this, particular "Community of the Mind," dedicated to Leonard.
The "Community" is separate from the Internet. The Internet is merely the vehicle.

In light of the "have fun" departure, "a Leonard Valentine" may still win the vote ~ since polls don't close 'till 5 PM, GMT ~ even if not, this "Community of the Mind" could have inspired some/one/two to write a "Valentine [for/to/about/regarding/including/inspired by/ignoring] Leonard" in Leonard's style, or in one's own.
I guess one just never knows.

I'm not wedded to my idea so anything is o.k. by me. Except for Community of the Mind. Sorry Byron. It makes me think of a mix of Scientology and Oprah.
Lizzytysh, once again I didn't explain myself very well. My original idea was a poem about love and/or religion. Two of Leonard's great themes. It doesn't have to be a valentine to Leonard. Nobody has to propose marriage to him.
The Valentine's Day connection I made was just an aside.
Whatever the theme I am going to enter. You keep saying you are not. Why not? You can do it. Surely former winners are not barred from entering?

Hi Charles ~My original idea was a poem about love and/or religion.
I still like Byron's original idea, though, like you, I'm not wedded to it, either~ particularly, since you've removed the "Valentine" aspect of your own, original idea; however, yours, rephrased by you, has greater merit to me now. I'm back into the not-caring-so-much zone now, with your latest suggestions... if you could narrow the field a little more than just "love and/or religion"

. . . a mix of Scientology and Oprah.
