absentmindedness is possibly the best state of mind for creating doodles. they offer a revealing glimpse into one's subconsciousness.

interesting, thanks! "is this how it is," she asks, "to exist in the face of suffering and death and somehow still keep singing?"
dedicated to ukraine. pain, suffering, not only in that war, but all over. people being exploited, scarred for life, trafficked, abused, treated as if they have no value.

thank you, that was good to read!

i am not surprised. she is a creative person, with a long entry in wikipedia.

>As for her song, I thought you didn't like melancholic dirges, Geoffrey? Whatever the case, I didn't like her song, but I know a few people who provoke similar sentiments! ;-)

it's true music with energy is preferred (second half of the song), but there are exceptions. we all know there exists people who can open a universe not everyone is capable of appreciating.

>Incidentally, why do people post links without saying what the link is for . . . some of Geoffrey's links leave me scratching my head as to the point.

this made me smile. good question . . . because not everyone likes a surprise, maybe? i have no idea, apart from accepting that we are individuals :)

You're not surprised? Why? I like a variety of pop artists -- you might be surprised, I think -- but she's not one of them. I did know who she was, but since I've never cared for any of her songs, I haven't paid enough attention to her to recognise her picture. I did have a look at the Wikipedia page you mentioned: she's very popular -- and I tend to hate what's popular! ;-) I see that she also sang the theme song to arguably the worst James Bond movie ever made (I like Bond movies, but not that one! I didn't like the theme song, either). Of course, no offence to Billie Eilish, or to anyone who likes her music -- it's just not my thing!

I've actually been listening to a lot of these guys lately -- I'm really into their stuff at the moment (and this song sounds fabulous with the volume cranked up!). I won't tell you in advance who it is. :)

Now you're just being picky! Does the Rolling Stones' last album count? ;-) But seriously, I do like random songs by random newer artists when I hear them -- I liked that Florence + The Machine song that Abby posted, and when I'm out somewhere (at a cafe or a shop) and newer stuff is playing, I sometimes enjoy some of the songs. From time to time, I will even listen to indie/university radio or streaming that plays an assortment of newer stuff, generally preferring indie/alternative/eclectic, but it varies. However, there is no particular "newer" pop/rock artist that I'm really into, because I honestly don't pay that much attention to any of them beyond fleetingly enjoying any given song that happens to be playing or that somebody brings to my attention at any given time -- none of them have thus far opened any new universes for me in which I wish to linger for more than just a few minutes! :)

the rolling stones' last album most certainly counts. it is played constantly while pictures are being made, along with billie eilish, harry styles, ariana grande, hawkwind, rihanna, justin bieber, pink floyd, lady gaga, bob marley, adele, eminem, taylor swift - just about anything that doesn't have a trumpet in it.

anyway, thanks for replying so thoroughly! you are an unbelievably interesting person, and a good sport - if you don't mind my saying so.

cheers.

His hair, especially that bit above the right eye, reminds me of cave paintings of swimmers. I feel a lot of joy in this one :)

that's an interesting response, abby - thank you! one cannot get any closer to real art than a cave painting, or maybe the ones children in kindergarten make. they come straight from the heart, original - with little or no influence from others.

LisaLCFan wrote: Tue Apr 01, 2025 7:37 pm How about a musical interlude? Not by me, but by a phenomenal acoustic guitarist from Australia, Tommy Emmanuel. I saw Mr. Emmanuel perform live in concert recently, and he was amazing -- his talent and energy is thrilling and inspiring! His music defies genres, being a mixture of blues, rock, classical, world music, jazz, pop... Here he is playing his own version of "Classical Gas" (originally an instrumental pop-classical hit written and performed in 1968 by Mason Williams, which was a staple of classic rock/pop radio for many years), with a bit of a medley thrown in for fun. While it may not be Gangnam Style, it's far from a melancholic dirge! Enjoy!

Hi Lisa,
I was recently watching TV and I saw Tommy Emmanuel (a definite Aussie legend) interviewed on a programme here in Australia called The Project and thought you would be interested in seeing what he had to say and play. Here's a snippet about and from the interview:
Widely regarded as one of the best acoustic guitarists in the world, Tommy Emmanuel’s high-level playing skills are there for all to see. But, like many virtuosos, he can’t read music.
Discussing this gap in his knowledge while appearing on The Project in his home country of Australia, Emmanuel acknowledged the irony of the fact that he can be teaching in a room full of students yet not know what they’re talking about.
“I can’t read notes,” he says. “I can read a chord chart and follow the chords, but I can’t read notes. It’s really weird, being a teacher in a place like Berklee College of Music: 400 students asking questions, and I’m the only person there - and I’m the instructor - I’m the only one there who can’t read. It’s bizarre.”
The interview and his guitar playing were excellent and it proves that you don't have to be able to read musical notes to be able to play so superbly nevermind teaching music!

Here's the link quoting the words above with a small video of the show - https://www.musicradar.com/artists/its- ... -knowledge

and here's the "The Project" YouTube link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbMls6pIwyY

Thank you, Bev! That's so kind of you to have thought of me and to post this! I enjoyed that little interview with Tommy Emmanuel -- he seems like such a nice guy, and he is definitely an excellent guitarist -- absolutely extraordinary!

It is very interesting that he can't read music -- I did not know that -- but his immense talent certainly makes up for it! Indeed, there are many ways that one can make music and share their music with others, and standard notation is only one of them.

If you and the other Aussies around here get a chance to see Tommy Emmanuel in concert while he's down your way, I highy recommend it! Cheers!

Lisa, I’m glad you liked that!

Just thinking about when I first saw him play on TV here. I can’t remember the exact year but it was back in the 1980’s. He absolutely mesmerised the audience with his unique style of playing. I tried to find a video of the show but couldn’t. I think it was Countdown.

Now I know you are interested in different styles etc of guitars. Tommy started playing about age 6 with a Maton MS500 Guitar made in Melbourne, Australia. He still plays a Maton acoustic guitar but different models.
See link for further info - https://www.guitarlobby.com/tommy-emman ... -and-gear/

Enjoy!

Cool, thanks! Tommy's guitars always sound wonderful -- but of course, some of that is down to his playing. ;-) However, now I know exactly what to buy if I ever decide to try to emulate his sound! I don't yet have a steel-string acoustic guitar in my collection. Hmmm... 8)
