Two notebooks were written, lines scribbled and crossed out, until in the end Leonard had 15 sheets with 80 verses on them. Of these, he had to choose a few to write down. The choice turned out to be very difficult, and subsequently Cohen himself performed his own song repeatedly in different variations during the 1988 and 1993 tours. Only the last verse has never changed - it is in it, according to the author, that sums up all the reflections about life and love.
About the true meaning of the song one can argue and speculate for a long time, but it is better to refer to the words of the author himself. On this subject, Leonard Cohen himself said in an interview: "Hallelujah is the Hebrew word for "praise to God" or "to praise the Lord. The song tells us that there are many different kinds of Hallelujahs. It's a praise not only of the Almighty, but also just an appreciation of life, not in a religious way, but in words and emotion." Cohen admitted that he wanted to show in his song - Hallelujah can manifest itself in things completely unrelated to religion. Some may find it difficult to understand and perceive - that's normal, because everyone has his own view of "Hallelujah".

My wife & I watched a Lenard Cohen “documentary” last night, and Mr. Cohen explained to “Ratso” that he’d written 150 verses for Hallelujah. There was never a real “order” to them short of going by the dates on his notebooks. Or to use what Mr. Cale performed. And he did say 150 verses.

It was quite a stun to find out that the US didn’t get the first recording because of some Columbia exec.

All in all the Doc was very informative, and we were quite surprised to learn Mr. Cohen worked on Hallelujah for about 7-years before recording it (didn’t a biblical figure have to work 7-years for his wife? Who ended not being his wife?).

Mr. Cohen was a spiritual man, he spent 6-years on a Mt. Baldy Zen retreat before he decided he needed to “get back down the hill”.

I’m a huge Mr. Cohen fan, and Hallelujah is probably my favorite song ever. I just wanted to thank all who’s posted over the years. It was lovely finding all you folks that are as inspired and blown away by, not only the astounding vocal talents, but also by the most phenomenal lyrical skill of The Late Great Mr. Leonard Cohen.
I really appreciated and throughly enjoyed the YouTube video posted of the school choir signing verses I had also never heard. Thank you so very much for sharing it.
Now I’ve read that his own personal files are available to be viewed in The University of Canada Library in Toronto!! Now it is official, my next vacation will be to Toronto Canada to view them. I’ve always been fascinated and drawn to Toronto. I have wanted to visit there for many years anyway. So I think now is definitely the time. I will start planning the trip tomorrow. I am not sure when it will be but should be within the year.
If I am allowed to take photos, I will make them available to you all here, as I might not even know about this if it was not for your kind efforts to share this great news. Hopefully I will have a follow up to this message soon. Best Regards to you all, and I am so happy to have met such a great group of likeminded, kindred souls.
Did you ever get to go see those files?

Lost verse from love letter he wrote according to a uTube reply I found:

We had only just barely met,
The table wasn't even set,
When I saw that look of love and fear
run through ya,
I'd seen our children in your eyes,
I heard their laughter and I heard their cries,
And in the sound I still hear Hallelujah...

Leonard Cohen's live version at Glastonbury.

Hallelujah (Live at Glastonbury) Lyrics:

I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, now the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah…

Now maybe, maybe there’s a God above
As for me, all I ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
But it’s not a cry that you hear tonight
No it’s not some pilgrim who claims
to have seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a very broken Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah…

Baby, I’ve been here before
I know this room, and I’ve walked this floor
You see, I used to live alone before I knew you
And I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch,
But listen, love is not some kind of victory march
No it’s a cold and it’s a very lonely Hallelujah
Hallelujah…

There was a time you let me know
What’s really going on below
Ah, but now you never show it to me, do you?
I remember, when I moved in you
And the holy dove, she was moving too,
Yes, and every single breath that we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah…
I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I learned to touch
I’ve told the truth, I did not come all the way
to Glastonbury to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand right here before the Lord of Song
With nothing, nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah…
