Hydra Meetup 2019?

Post by Cairn1902 »

As a husband of a Leonard Cohen fanatic, I wondered if there are “plans” for a Hydra Meetup in 2019? Could I also ask if any other Scottish fans have travelled to Hydra independently? Very grateful for any information/advice you could offer on the “best” way to approach such an adventure for two “mature” Scottish travellers?

Many thanks in advance.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Our 2019 meetup will be on the 2nd weekend of June, as usual.

We don't have any program details yet - and the schedule will be up to the number of participants.
In 2017 we had more than 200, almost twice as much as previously.

We will have some program from Friday June 7 to Sunday evening June 9, but there might be something already on June 6. However, this gathering is more holiday than an Event with full program. Many participants stay a bit longer, like a week, and just take it easy. The weather is perfect at that time, and the tourist season has not yet begun.

We will post more details & open registration this Fall at www.leonardcohenfiles.com/backtohydra.html
You will also find some travel hints on that page. Take a flight to Athens, then a direct bus to Piraeus and then boat to Hydra. Looking forward to seeing you!

.... or spend a night or two in Athens then take the metro to Piraeus. This pair of 60-somethings made the trip to Hydra from the UK for the first time in over 20 years in 2017 and we were pleasantly surprised just how easy it was. Feel free to message me nearer the time if I can help.

I would love to (doubt I can, because of classes, and I'm broke too)

I went there once, in a cruise from Athens to a couple of Greek islands, including Hydra. It is a lovely place, small, but charming, and I didn't have time to go to the place Leonard stayed!

Heard on the news today that Hydra is suffering from a powerfailure since last sunday and that consequently the whole Island is without power.
Lot of damage to (frozen) food etc and also worrying that most of the tourist are now leaving the Island.

Let's hope that the power problem can be solved quickly now!

Nicolas, is sending mail again, so it looks that power is back on Hydra.

Happy new year to every body!
It will be my first time at the meetup, but I have already visited Hydra and I fell in love with it. Last summer I dedicated myself to the cleaning of some beaches and I decided that I will do it constantly, if someone wants to join you're welcome.

Wybe, may I check please. The long list of places at the bottom of your post

2008 -- Brugge, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, Helsinki, Oberhausen, Rotterdam -- 2008
2009 -- Antwerpen, Venice, Barcelona .-- 2009
2010 -- 2 x Gent, Lille, 2x Las Vegas, -- 2010
2012 -- Gent, 2 x Amsterdam, Dublin, Verona -- 2012
2013 -- Pula, Rotterdam -- 2013

Are these all the places from which you were expelled or deported by the police? In the later years of Cohen's wonderful career and Life, I noticed there was a growing number of controversial followers, generally known as Leonigans, headed by the infamous "Jarkko".

There is very little known about so-called "Jarkko"although he and his partner, the dangerous "Eija", are widely considered the Bonny and Clyde de nos jours. "Jarkko" first came to public attention when he won Simon Cowell's hit TV show, "Finland's Got Talent" for preparing 150 tax accounts while simultaneously dancing on the head of a Finn. .

Mr Wybe, please inform us of any further imprisonment you suffer, and do reflect on your chosen life-style. It is surely still possible that you change your ways.

Mister solongleonard or notsolong,

Thank you for your interest and concerns, but I have to admit I had some problems with the Jazzpolice during that time. During the long list of concerts visits, I always could escape from the police except last year in Budapest. The last night of the LC event at the Jazzclub, the police came to remove us from the area. I suspect they where informed by the “Justice round the corner”.
I’m happy to say that at the moment I’m free as a Bird on the Wire.

Hope to see you in Hydra,

How kind you speak to me, Mr Wybe, even though in person we have never met.

I will be putting in my application for the open position of Mayor of Hydra. I will also strongly support any of you old Cohen faces seeking election as donkeys.

I am currently in discussion with the Mayor of London to confirm if my Senior Citizen railway pass includes a free flight to Athens. Once I reach that Grek capital I understand that the rest of the trip is a short swim, followed by a short stroll.

Always be careful if you are followed by a short troll. And
I tell you that for nothing! That will cost you 500,000 Drachma, the common currency of Greece and your country the Never Lands, famous home of Peter Pan.

Good Evening

Solong

Here you find a copy of a post from Hydradirect on Facebook with a video made last Sunday including The Bench !
Hydradirect:

I opted out of walking the entire carnival route this year. Instead, after videoing the start, I went the other way along the coast to the Kondylenia Taverna to wait for the parade. A good excuse for a V&T while soaking up the atmosphere. Which reminds me, Dimitris I owe you, I didn’t mean to do a runner! Along the way, I stopped at Leonard's bench to say hello and hum a few bars of Bird On A Wire.
