Leonard Cohen, contender for Nobel Prize for Literature?
There was a piece on the UK Guardian's website, recently, about
Bob Dylan's chances of receiving the Nobel prize for literature:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/se ... literature
Dylan, I'm sure, is a worthy contender but I have often thought that Len
would be a most excellent choice. I wonder what people think?

Agree that Bob Dylan is a worthy contender.
However, my vote goes to the Master of Words ........Leonard Norman Cohen

Both of them are worthy contenders, so Leonard this year as he is older and Dylan next year!

I hadn't realized that Bob Dylan had a book of poetry - I'm going to track that down.
hummm... I wonder if we have any Norwegian Bob Dylan fans here?"[Dylan has] been backed from 33/1 into 10/1 thanks to some decent £100-plus bets … One of the big bets comes from Norway, the others are UK-based,

There used to be a Facebook page promoting Leonard Cohen for Nobel Peace Prize -
It's mentioned by Ruth (somewhat_nifty) here in another thread -
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=18243#p197087
Now - I can't find it on Facebook!
The creator of the page was not keeping it active - and - possibly it didn't survive when Facebook decided "who by group"
But - it would be a good FACEBOOK PAGE for someone to create!

Re: Leonard Cohen, contender for Nobel Prize for Literature?
Hello friends,
we are all fans of Leonard Cohen and of course we would all be happy if he should recieve the Nobel Prize for literature.
It is also true that there are other great rocksingers who write lyrics on highest level.
Bob Dylan has been mentioned. But there is also Patti Smith, Neil Young, John Cale and others.
The western „culture industry“ is still based on the classical dualism between „high“ and „low culture“.
All our heroes fall in the pit of the „low culture“, because they are„pop singers“ (even if they have written books of literature).
I don’t think that the committee in Goteburg can overthrow easily these rules. It would need some kind of revolution.
So don’t cry if another time no „pop singer“ will make it.
Greetings to all
Wolfgang

Of course with one or two notable exceptions (eg the wonderful 'last thoughts on woody guthrie' ) these are technically song lyrics not poems!
Personally i doubt wither Bob or Leonard will receive the nobel prize for literature
Leonard's work resonates

Re: Leonard Cohen, contender for Nobel Prize for Literature?
I think there is a rather involved nominating process.
I remember I read about it when the subject came up here a few years ago.
And I think I am recalling that there was a journalist in Toronto some years ago who had been looking into nominating Leonard.
But the Nobel Prizes are not just bestowed - without someone being nominated.
The person nominating has to go through a detailed process of applications/deadlines.
And I forget the time frame but I believe the deadline for the paperwork to be submitted is the year prior to when nominees are chosen*.

I don’t know if Leonard has ever been nominated, I know that Irving Layton was nominated twice though.
Wolfgange, the thing to remember about Leonard, and I think this is something that separates him from the amazing lyricists that you have mentioned, is that long before he was known as a singer/songwriter he was known (at least here) as a poet who was very well thought of. From my understanding he was a bit of a young superstar in literary circles, publishing his first book at only 22! My introduction to Mr. Cohen was in grade 10 English class. I didn’t know that he sang until sometime after I had discovered several of his books of poetry.

Hi thanks Lightasabreeze and Cohenadmirer,
I actually meant the book of poetry mentioned in the article - 'Tarantula'. I guess it was an underground book of Bob Dylans poems written int the late 60's and then published in 1971. I ordered a copy through Abes Books. A book of lyrics would be excellent for someone a little more familiar with his songs. I agree Cohenadmirer, a song lyric is not a poem. A lyric is married to its music and is meant to be heard with the music.

Cate - I also don't know if Leonard has ever been nominated. And I am wondering if Bob Dylan was actually formally nominated either - or if it is speculation - that seems to occur every year. I found information about the person in Toronto who was spearheading a campaign to nominate Leonard - and he was not a journalist as I said above, but a radio host - Paul Kennedy.
Here is a thread that Jarkko started in 2005 - "A Nobel for Leonard" - and an article in the National Post -
http://leonardcohenforum.com/viewtopic. ... t&start=15
This is information from the article - about the nomination process - and there are restrictions/requirements even about who is qualified to nominate someone. Also - from other articles that I have read more recently - I believe that it tends to be rather political - what nominations are considered.

HOW NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS ARE SELECTED
If Leonard Cohen's fans really want him to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, here's how they'll need to go about it.
NOMINATION
The process of selecting a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature starts in September, about a year before the prize announcement. At this time, the Swedish Academy, sends out letters to individuals and organizations qualified to nominate candidates. The right to submit proposals, based on the principle of competence and universality, is enjoyed by: members of the Swedish Academy and other national academies of similar construction and purpose; university professors of literature and linguistics; previous Literature Laureates; and presidents of national author societies. The nominations reach the Academy between September and February. Around 200 names have been submitted yearly for consideration.
SELECTION
During the spring, the proposals are examined by the Nobel Committee and in April it presents for the Academy's approval a preliminary list of candidates, containing some 20 names. Before the Academy's summer recess the list has usually been further reduced to about five names. In October, the Academy makes its choice. For the election to be valid, a candidate must gain more than half of the votes cast.
ANNOUNCEMENT
After the vote, the prize winner is contacted and a press conference is held. Information about the nominations, investigations and opinions concerning the award is kept secret for 50 years.

The right to submit proposals, based on the principle of competence and universality, is enjoyed by: members of the Swedish Academy and other national academies of similar construction and purpose; university professors of literature and linguistics; previous Literature Laureates; and presidents of national author societies" this are pre-chosen institutions, bodies and professors.
Well, how about to write a qualified letter to the swedish academy, what is not like a "fan-letter", but rather via a previous literature laureate or another national academie. Don t we have such qualified people here in the forum? I could search in my list of friends and aquaintances and I am very sure I find supporters with "qualified names".
Actually, I heard, that once Leonard have been nominated (but this is hearsay)
