Canadian Tenors just did a nice version of "Hallelujah"...

Post by John in LA »

on the Emmy Awards show here in Los Angeles, CA.

It was during the "in memoriam" part of the show which honors the lives of people in the industry who died in the last year.

I did.
and what did you want?
to call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth."

At its worst...yet another hijacking of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," this time for the in memoriam section.
I agree with John in LA. For me, it was the highlight of the show. :D

And I am happy that in this morning's edition of the Los Angeles Times on the front page of the Calendar section, the wonderful television critic, Mary McNamara, acknowledged Leonard Cohen and the persistent hijacking of his Hallelujah.

And here's an interesting quote from the Calgary Herald -
Worst cliche song choice

Note to producers, singers, contestants, bathroom crooners, Casanovas, elder emos and k.d lang: from now on only one person can sing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and that's Leonard Cohen.

Forgot to add in my post above:

sonleonard teases me a lot about my Leonard Cohen passion.

So when this came on, I texted him, while he was sitting in the Nokia Theater watching them sing it live,
hope your are enjoying the canadian tenors singing LEONARD COHEN's hallelujah

Here, here!! We should start an official petition, and try to make this a law (an international law, of course).

From Twitter (has been "retweeted" 100 times) -
Joshua Malina - Don't judge a Leonard Cohen song by its cover. #Emmys
And - a few more - they were really having fun with this out in Twitterland -
PopeShakey - You know who sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah the best? Leonard Cohen.
jondekel - Note to everyone: From now on only ONE person can sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”...and that’s Leonard Cohen.
JeremyKKirk - That Emmy "In Memoriam" isn't offensive to those who died. It's offensive to Leonard Cohen. Stop now please.
warrenleightTV - Note to Leonard Cohen: we don't blame you.
jpodhoretz - Leonard Cohen just joined the Taliban to protest this.

....and it keeps coming....
The criminal overuse of "Hallelujah"
A performance at the Emmys makes it official -- it's time for a moratorium on Leonard Cohen's overplayed song

Ah well, I thought it was nice...;^) of course I also liked KD Lang's version so what do I know...?

I have to laugh at anyone involved in the television industry complaining about anything being overused, they live on retelling the same story over and over and over and over....

P.S. I can say that cause I make my living in the entertainment industry, I just don't take it as seriously as Warren Leight apparently does.

Those tweets are too funny and so spot on. I agree with John in LA - ONLY LC should sing H and also kd lang, because LC likes it.

Thank you, John in LA , I can now cross off Canadian Tenors from my listening list, as I have long since done with Irish Tenors and Celtic Tenors, etc. I prefer one tenor on his own, preferably singing opera for which his voice is trained, rather than groups of them bellowing away together ! The list of THE DEAD was interesting, though - so many of them....Tempus fugit... . :(

Very poignant stuff, but I agree, ONLY Leonard can perform Hallelujah. It's HIS song.
I heard it crucified so many times now it's not a joke. :)

I just saw a complete hijacking of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah (which someone posted on my fb page) by Jotta in a duet with Michely Manuely. It is on Godtube.com and the only things recognizable from the original are the tune and the chorus!!! I've been a Leonard Cohen fan for 40 years and am also a Christian. I find this version offensive and it must be in violation of copyright laws.
