This looks very interesting! Does anybody know anything about this DVD, who produced it, etc? I see that it "is not authorised by Leonard Cohen." Even if it is just a bunch of compiled clips from other sources (which it probably is), it might be a nice collection. Does anybody have it?

Have no way of knowing for sure, but I am suspicious this may be a repackaging of the the second of the Chrome Dreams dvds -- "Under Review"

The first was Under Review 1978-2006, coming it at 64 minutes in length. The second was Under Review 1934-1977. That one is 87 minutes long. That could now be "Early Years".

I found both of interest, but not huge additions to my Cohen collection. Both loudly proclaim they are not authorized by LC, his management, or his record label.

Thanks, Dick. Interesting possibility (and therefore, the DVD would not be so interesting after all). I almost ordered it, but now I will wait to hear more.

This one has been sold at amazon.de and other German sites for quite a while now. It does not seem to be a copy of "Under Review" but buyers have written disappointed reviews only.

Dick is absolutely right. "The Early Years" is a repackaging of "Under Review: 1934-77". The two DVDs are identical in every respect. I bought a copy of "The Early Years" via Amazon when it first came out in the US in February but I hadn't got round to watching it. However, when the subject came up here and in the interests of furthering collective knowledge, I popped the DVD in to the machine this morning. The title "Under Review 1934-77" pops up a couple of minutes in, as it does on the original.

My own thoughts on the "Under Review" products is that they are worth watching once and they are cheap enough to satisfy curiosity but probably not much more than that.'

Thanks, Wendy, for investigating this!

I must say, I am deeply unimpressed when companies try to cash in on Leonard's wonderful new wave of popularity by trying to deceive buyers like this. Aren't there laws about false advertising? There should be.

There are, Wendy but these would not appear to be broken here. The last line under 'Description of product' informs the potential that the product is not endorsed by Leonard Cohen.

But they are still trying to sell this DVD as a "new" product, with a 2011 release date, when it is, in fact, an older video that's been on the market for ages, under a different name. That's the false advertising.

I agree with you Lisa. Anyone who has received this "not new" product should notify Amazon of the defect.

Posible return and refund. Ideally, they will also remove that listing.

From that point of view I agree, LisaLCFan - but I don't know if they've broken any laws

Hi Bird off the Wire,

I don't know if any actual laws have been broken, either (there might be loopholes they can use, since they don't actually say it is "brand new", etc). But, it is definitely not ethical, since they are clearly trying to deceive people, because otherwise why repackage the video with a different title, different cover art, and a different release date? I think there probably are legal precedents that may support a case against them (whoever "they" are), due to their rather blatant deception. However, I don't imagine many people would want to take legal action over a $20 DVD. It still really bugs me that this sort of thing goes on, and that a company would try to deliberately dupe consumers so that they can make an extra buck at our expense. I wonder how many unsuspecting Leonard Cohen fans now own two identical DVDs because of this? Wendy is one of them, I was almost another.

Oh well, enough of my rant against capitalist scum! ;-)

Why did you include my name in your comment? All I did was report the facts to confirm that the DVD is a re-hashing of Under Review.

As to the rest of it well - caveat emptor. If we buy an unofficial product then we have to accept that we are taking a risk. In the case of the Early Years DVD I was prepared to take that risk for a few £s to satisfy my curiosity but it didn't work out.

Talking of new DVDs, I see Amazon is listing another new one, this time a re-hashing of the 1988 San Sebastian concert under the title "Dance Me To The End Of Love". A lot of these "unofficial" DVDs have been distributed through Amazon over the years.

Wendy, my apologies for using your name which was not intended. I intended to reply to LisaL's post just above mine. I've no idea how I made the error, but it was inadvertent and I apologise if you were offended or affronted in any way.

No, no ... definitely not offended Bird off the Wire but you know how these things go, the next thing is someone is having a pop because of something you never said in the first place!

Thanks for the correction.
