I heard Cesaria Evora a few years ago in an intimate cafe setting. She had a terrific stage presence and an incredible voice. Unfortunately I couldnt understand a word of what she was singing but it didnt really matter.
This year we had the pleasure of hearing Vusi Mahlasela of south africa in the new orleans festival. He's a class act - he writes and sings in English, Zulu and Sotho and all his songs have a quiet dignity about them.

Another artiste who made a big impression on me at the festival is Marce Lacouture whose only album La Joie Cadienne (Cajun Joy) sung completely in Lousiana French is an outstanding debut album. Her voice is arguably the purest female voice I've ever heard - qualitatively similar to Jennifer Warnes' but with some of the depth of Joan Baez.

Another "foreign sound" I was recently introduced to is algerian singer-songwriter Souad Massi who just finished up a tour of USA. Possessing a sensuous voice and beautiful face she makes every one of those 1001 arabian nights come alive in the mind's eye.

No doubt about that, Kush.....she certainly is beautiful. The style of her sweater and something about the look of her face makes that photo appear to be an older one, but with it being her "latest CD," I guess not, eh?
Simon ~ I love Jacques Brel. Lightning [here on the Forum] knows a lot about him, and loves him even more.
