The Canadian Maple tree will soon have a permanent home on the grounds of Lissadell, (near the Concert area).
Looking for suggestions for a suitable inscription on a Granite Plaque to be erected at the site :!: .
Here are two ideas :
"Planted to commemorate the visit to Sligo of Leonard Cohen and his Band"
From The Leonard Cohen Forum, July 2010.
or;
"A corner of Sligo that is forever Leonard Cohen"
Planted by The Leonard Cohen Forum, July 2010.
any suggestions, please :?: ( deadline, Wednesday)

Stonecutter will charge per letter so less can be more.

;-) .
P.S. If Leonard himself reads this  any line from "You" will suffice .

I like the second one best but would prefer something other than "planted by". I'll put my thinking cap on. However would it be too much to have a unified heart on the plaque? I think it would be a nice touch.

It's a lovely idea but i dread to think of the cost of getting a complex design like the unified heart engaved.Sometimes it's easier to get it done on metal and attached on to the plaque but it gives a very municipal sort of feel. Simplicity is always the answer with these things, sublime would be more than enough for me
Mike- How are you funding this and do you require donations? I feel strongly that no individual should be out of pocket and I'm sure a small donation each would suffice. I can sell a photograph from the night if that would help raise funds. I'm ordering a few canvases and A3 prints soon anyway.
Overall, it's a lovely idea and would certainly encourage me to return to Lissadell.

I wasn't thinking a very detailed heart rather a rough engraving which would make it look weathered and as if it belonged there. I've seen images of what I mean but cant find them at minute. This is the closest I could find minus the wording and circle.

Also I too was thinking about cost and agree we should all help out where possible. I like your idea of the word sublime. Maybe something like this,

To Commerorate the sublime performance of Leonard Cohen
July 31st/August 1st 2010
Sincerely, The Leonard Cohen Forum

Re the tree planting. What a great idea. I think Leonard will be tickled pink to know its being planted at Lissadell. My contribution is - "Canadian threads, Yeats read, Thanks for passing by - sincerely The Leonard Cohen Forum, July 2010" Also, please let me know if funds are needed. Would be more than happy to contribute. Catherine.

Thank you for suggestions to date.
Yes, "musicmania", the Unified Heart is great idea.
I am working with "Lissadell people" on plans.
I am willing to cover costs associated with the Plaque, but I appreciate that some Members might like to be involved.
Following "sandraas" suggestion I have been in touch with Dick Straub, seeking his advice, regarding his very successful venture last year with the Plaque erected on the Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan, with excess funds directed to a charity of Leonard's choice.
How to organise such participation on the Forum may present a problem so it may be best to proceed as originally planned, the main thing is that the Canadian Maple will have found a fitting home.
The good news is that the response from Frank McGarry of our local, long established, stonecutters "Hughes Brothers" in Carlow, was very positive, he was delighted that some of his work would be erected at Lissadell and offered a very reasonable estimate of costs complete with stand.
I also hope to have some news in the next day or two on the Visitor's Book page signed by Leonard.
I spoke to one of the people connected with Drumcliff and she reminded me that besides Yeats many dear kindred are buried in the Churchyard and that the Church is in continuous use for Services.
They will consider the matter in their own time.
They were not informed of Leonard's intended visit.
I did get a call to say he was headed in that direction but when I mentioned this to "trish" and "jdhayes" in Sligo we thought it best not to rush out but to allow him his privacy during his visit.
However Malcolm was in the churchyard, he told me later that others who happened to be present also respected his privacy.

Thats sounds good Mick. However I wouldn't abbreviate Leonards name in the signature especially when you already have used it fully before hand. In my mind that wouldn't look right. Also since he played in both July and August maybe just have 2010 with no month.

Nothing to do with me really as I didn't go to the Lissadell concerts. However, if you'll allow me to express a view, I do personally rather like the abbreviation. A sort of "in joke" ...... Who cares whether the rest of the world get it, or not.

Thanks, musicmania,
"sincerely, L. Cohen Forum" was picking up on last line of Famous Blue Raincoat "sincerely, L. Cohen"

thanks Wendy, Leonard would certainly get it ..

The tree-planting ceremony for fans in Sligo was held on 31st July but maybe you're right "2010" might suffice.
I have idea of a garden section in that " Canadian Maple tree corner" of Lissadell with flowers / shrubs planted that are mentioned in Leonard Cohen lyrics,
"rose in your teeth" " green lilac park" " laurel leaves" etc.
If we could get a list of some of the above compiled I will submit the idea to Lissadell,
"thinking cap required once again" ...... ;-) carlowmike.

The Visitor's Book signed by Leonard when he paid a visit to Drumcliffe is now in safe-keeping,
it will be preserved and put on public display at a later stage.

Good - I remember reading in some previous post that one member could not find his signature and hoped it had not been 'removed.'
Also, I love the idea of the the corner of Lissadell with the tree, flowers etc. And the inscription should definitely end with "Sincerely, L.Cohen. " Leonard would certainly approve of that - and smile....
