Judy Collins on Leonard at Governor's Island

Post by lightning » Tue Jul 28, 2009 6:47 pm

Judy Collins called Dylan a schlubby looking guy and the crowd gave a round of applause for Leonard at Judy's recent outdoors concert at Governor's Island, 7/26/ 09. Judy, 70, has grown old with amazing grace.

lightning, sorry but I think you forgot to say that she also called his Bobiness brilliant and that she was a passionate, passionate fan of his. ;-)
I guess it all started for me sometime around Christmas 1967 and now, goodness me, it's.........2018 and over fifty years later.
No one ever listens to me. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen record.

Hearing Dylan praised to the sky is no surprise but hearing him called a schlubby guy is a rare event. Yes, I was also surprised to hear that applause for Leonard.

Why?

They were probably also applauding Judy Collins for her large part in bringing Leonard into the public domain.

AvidCohenfan, they sang instead, for Dylan  ;-)

Ah Vicomte, but they sang at Judy's urging....it wasn't spontaneous. The clapping was :D

Thanks SO much lightning for sharing with us...and yes, Judy looks great!

All the best,

She looked better than great-- she looked fabulous. I only wondered why she was wearing a lined coat when it was 85 degrees Farenheit in the middle of July, designer-ish tho' it be. Combine that with carrying a heavy guitar and not sitting down for almost and hour and half (except at the piano)-- the physical feat for a small woman of 70 years is in itself astounding.

I think we mere mortals have much to aspire to.....Judy at 70....Leonard at 74....

Beginning to think that for those who take care of themselves...rest, nutrition, meditation, mind active...plus having a passion...makes 70 the "new" 50....

All the best,
Diana

Lightening, thanks for posting this video, it's delightful! She is so charming. I actually came to know of leonard through Judy's recordings of his songs. In those days Joan Baez was doing Dylan's songs and I was wondering who songs Judy was singing I was mesmerized by them I think Sisters of Mercy is what really did it for me. So I looked into who this Cohen guy was. And the rest is history!

How super of Judy to sing to us for free at the Folks on the Island series sponsored by Trinity Church of Wall Street. Wouldn't be great if Leonard Cohen would also come to Governor's Island?

You might also enjoy the other clips from the concert I posted in the account of clairedelune49:

Barbara Allen( child ballad, folk favorite):

Hi lightning,

Thanks for the video links...it's great to see these. I saw Judy at the Jazz Cafe in London earlier this year, and she was wonderful. She looked even better with her hair piled-up! By the way you've repeated the video for "Barbara Allen" (a childhood favourite of mine, too) instead of giving the link for "Anathea".

All the best, John E

Hi all,
I fixed the link for Anathea-- check her other YouTube performances of this song if you like it. The Newport is only partial but it soars.
