Instrumentation on unreleased tracks

Post by RainDog1980 »

I recently read a quote where Leonard said many of his friends were disappointed with the amount of instrumentation that was used on his debut, so he wanted to make a very stark record with Songs From a Room.

I've been listening to some of the older albums lately, and noticed the stark contrast between songs like "Store Room" and "Blessed is the Memory" from the rest of Songs, as well as the alternate take of "Dress Rehearsal Rag" from the final cut and the rest of Songs of Love and Hate.

Does anybody have any insight to the recording of these songs? I also recall Leonard being unsatisfied with John Hammond's production of "Songs", so I'm wondering if "Store Room" and "Blessed" were intended to sound different.

Just some thoughts. Hope to hear some insight!
