Thanks Herbsttag, I have more time now.
Welcome to the forum and this game!

I took a guess because of Tom Waits first album Closing Time.
I don’t know off-hand about a book by that name.

Hopefully this song won’t be too hard to guess.
Some lines include a declaration of guilt and righting a wrong.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to B4real ~ me

Thanks for the welcome. The novel is Joseph Heller's sequel to Catch-22.

To answer your question, is it Bird On A Wire?
Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.

Well done Herbsttag, that’s correct :D and thanks for the info about that book.

I have to say I felt inexplicably compelled to ask for that song title. Possibly because I’ve just listened to or watched precisely 512 versions of Bird On The Wire!!! I think I’ve hypnotised myself  I feel in a slightly catatonic state at the moment! I’m compiling a book of LC’s songs & versions & improvisations with artwork and knew it would be a marathon task but OMG!

Here are some (not all) BOTW variations that I’ve come across:

I have tried my very best to be free ...

Like a fish on a hook ...

I have broken (saved) all my sorrows (upon/to/for) on thee ...

If I, if I have been unkind
And I have sometimes ...

If I have been untrue, if I have been untrue
I know, baby, I know, I never fooled you ...

Now I hope you know by now
It was never, it was never like you ...

Back to you now if you want to post the next question.

Your book project sounds like a lot of fun! I know what you mean about hypnotising onesself. I've been listening to If It Be Your Will on repeat for the past day or two and I can almost hear it in my sleep.

I like the line with the sorrows. :D Now, for the question. I'm looking for a song in which a character pilots an aircraft in an unusual (and quite impossible) way.

Is it Field Commander Cohen, parachuting acid into diplomatic cocktail parties?

On second thought, you're probably looking for the "Master Song" ("And he took you up in his aeroplane / which he flew without any hands").

It's the Master Song, though Field Commander Cohen kinda fits too.

Two songs in which the narrator states that he has been very patient.

The first song mentions a colourful animal.

The second song mentions a famous composer.

Miracle is correct.

Jazz Police however ... Where is the colourful animal? - Oh, you mean the turtle. I'm looking for a song that mentions an animal that is much more colourful than a turtle - and also much faster.

Hey, I've been sitting here since Wednesday morning, waiting patiently for this question!
Also, I guess, turtle meat is even more colourful than a turtle itself.
Heh...
;-)
