Which is your favorite Leonard Cohen period?

Post by YankovicGretzky »

I don't remember whether or not I ever asked this question.

Does this question concern the music only or is it also about Leonard as a person. Because that would influence my vote towards the 1990s as I really love Leonard more in his old age.

So you know him, Catherine? Lucky you. It's self-evident, surely, that polls such as these are about the artist, not the man. And anyway, even if you did know him, the idea of rating someone according to periods of their life is an unbelievably insulting notion. I mean, how would you like it if there was a similar poll about yourself? The mind boggles.

Sorry, Catherine - I was pissed when I wrote that. I stand by the content of what I said, but the tone just 'sounds' plain aggressive. Apologies.

2000's... a reminder that I can one day find more peace.

Gotta say the 90s, simply because that's when The Future came out.

I can´t understand, why there is just one period man can vote.
I like Leonard Cohen- artist as a complex. It is so great, that he is still in progress. Some songs are better for me, some a little worse, but every period is amazing. I can´t just select only one period and say: this is the one I like.

The problem I have with the 90's onwards is the degredation of His voice.
Makes you wonder if He did go on tour how the classics would sound...

I'm not sure how the shifting timbre of Cohen's voice amounts to 'degradation', but even where, technically speaking, there has been degradation in the voice of 'non-singer' vocalists it doesn't necessarily imply a nosedive in the quality of the artist's work. See, for example, Tom Waits, Neil Young and Bob Dylan. Indeed, when it comes to Cohen and Waits I think they sound better then ever.

I was actually just thinking the other day about how his voice would sound on tour these days. Especially after reading all the comments about his voice "disappearing" on Dear Heather.
But, I went for the 90s and The Future because I think his voice is just perfect on that one. He's never had a classically" beautiful voice, so they say, but by the 90s it was a lot deeper and harsher than the 60s and 70s, obviously, and it fit the music pefectly, imo.

The 70:s! What else?!

I mean SoLaH, NSftOC, and DoaLM! Sure the latter two are none of Leonard's greatest two but SoLaH contains 6 of his greatest songs.

Aggressive? Really? Gosh. I should think everything I say is aggressive, then! ROFL!!

Or did you edit something out?

And I don't have a favourite period, so I can't vote. I love the lot.
Only just found this video of LC:

I like everything he has done since 1934. This is impossible because one of the things that I really admire is that he has remained true to his art and has evolved without going commercial. Plus in the 80's he did not fo a soppy duo, which seemed to be the trend in those days.
Please note, I did not vote
