"Had To Go Crazy To Love You"

Post by Steven »

Bought "Blue Alert" last night. I'm particularly smitten with
"Had To Go Crazy To Love You." It's a sweet and beautiful
song. Anjani is a master level vocalist.

I'm so happy to hear that you really like their album and Anjani's voice, Steven. Over time, the same as when Leonard is singing his own, you'll find different songs 'moving in on you.' :)

Lizzy,

Have you heard the CD and, if so, any favorites yet?

I don't doubt what you said about these songs
having the capacity "of moving in on you," ("over time")
but I'd be surprised if they'll do so in nearly the same
way as Leonard Cohen's recordings have.

Hi Steven ~

Oh yes, I have their cd and love it. My favourites... tough call on that. The album moves seamlessly from one song to the next. I haven't been listening to it [or any other] for awhile now, due to electronic breakdowns... however, when I do, my mind continues to sing them long after I stop hearing them. "Thanks for the Dance" is just so evocative and bittersweet, and even simply writing the title, I'm off 'singing' again 8) ... one two three, one two three, one... :) . I really love this album 8) .

Not much help was I  ?

Lizzy,

Your feelings for "Thanks For The Dance," are shared here.
Additionally, this song, like most of the others, are very
atmospheric, without overdone sentimentalism.

Was it Pico Iyer whose comments I recently read who referred to Anjani's presentation and how well it worked in keeping oversentimentalism from traipsing all over Leonard's lyrics? When I come here and read briefly like I've been doing, I can't seem to get back to [find] what I want to refer to, to get my reference exactly right. Just don't have the time to search for it.

Lizzy,

I don't know if it was this person's comments that you read; sorry.
On some of the songs, Anjani's absolute control over breath and
voice and the emotionalism conveyed is remarkable, though,
and, yes, it keeps "oversentimentalism from traipsing all over
Leonard's lyrics." There is concert film footage of Springsteen
doing his "Fire" song, so constrained that it is almost unbearable,
as the emotions are s-l-o-w-l-y dispensed and allowed to really
penetrate. Thought of this when listening to Anjani singing
"Had To Go Crazy To Love You," as she does the same
kind of thing.

Hi Steven ~

I'd love to have that footage 8) ~ and I so so SO agree with you on Anjani's voice and breath. Leonard commented on [G~d help me, as I'm about to massacre what he actually said by paraphrasing it  ] how people want to be generous and, so doing, overdo it in their attempts... yet, Anjani goes to and stops at exactly the right point... no more, no less... and, in that, her singing of his songs is perfect. His comment was, of course, succinct and eloquent :D . Mine, well  ... I need sleep  .

You're directly on target with both Pico's and Leonard's [and my :) ] perspectives.

Goodnite :D !

I also love the album. I find it very soothing. 'The Mist' is
the song I relate to most on an emotional level (more like
wishful thinking really), but I remember one day when 'Thanks
for the Dance' ran through my head all day long. Apart from
Anjani's beautiful voice, I like the many layers of meaning
that I perceive each time I listen to the songs. I do hope that
they collaborate on another album, although I would also like to
have another new LC album, or perhaps more duets.

Greedy aren't I ! :P

Sherry,

"The Mist" is very "visual" poetry. Whatever "wishful thinking" it has
brought up in you, may your wishes and their potential realization
both be towards your highest and best interests.
