CONCERT REPORT: Oberhausen, Germany, June 25, 2013

Post by Per Slucht »

Concert started 10 or 15 minutes late. Even at the front the sound wasn't too good at the start. Missing a bit of high in the first 3 songs or so, then sounding a bit too sharp in the next. Also echo. Then it was allright, but the speakers on the left where we were (8th row) kept slightly sounding like there was something wrong, especially with the girls' voices.

Apart from that the atmosphere was great. With our Mönchengladbach experience last year still in mind (Bockwurst people carrying beer around all night) we were pleasantly surprised. The audience were very enthousiastic, starting with a standing ovation, but disciplined through-out. The other thing we liked was the applauding exactly as learned from DVD, which gave the concert a familiar as well as an absurdic touch. Some of it seemed for no reason.

LC in great form. Good voice, joking on the keyboard in tower, some witty remarks. All in all a very enjoyable night. Especially with Lover Lover Lover, which is one of my faves.

Leonard and all the Band Members seems to have a lot of fun right from the start.
As usually, Leonard find the right Words to "get in touch" with his crowd. It really seems to me, that he enjoy the Touring much more as in 2008.
Surely he is more "relaxed"; maybe "the pressure" is gone. Back then, it must have been a successs, it has to be.
And today he knows for sure, that the crowd will love to see and hear him and his perfectly chosen Bandmembers again and again... It is really like a "re-union" from Concert to Concert...
The Audience was in "a good mood" too; they sing the Songs with enthusiasm; after "Lover Lover Lover", they gave Leonard and the UHTC a very intense and warm Applause...
It was my Feeling too, that the Sound wasn't so good in the first part. But after the break, it was much better.
When "Waiting for a Miracle" was started, a dear Friend of mine would like to give Leonard some beautiful Flowers.
The officials want, that the People give the Flowers to a security Man; and then they will bring them all to Leonard.
I am sure, that they will do this, no doubt about it. Partially, I can understand this Procedere (because of the security matters).
But I think, that the "other Way" is the much nicer one: to Hand out the Flowers right at the Stage individually.
But because of the great distance between the Stage and the Audience, she have "to cast" the Flowers up un the stage.
Fortunately, the bouquet "landed" right up next to Leonard: he take the Flowers up and hold them for the most part of the Song...
This was like a "little signal" to a lot of other People.... a view Flowers and some other things find the Way up to the Stage.
It was so nice to meet some other Fans between the first and the second Part. Especially a very nice Lady from Utrecht (I hope, that she will read this!!)!

Yes, it was another really wonderful Concert last Night in Oberhausen... Can't hardly wait to the other Concerts
I hope, that I will have the opp., to hear "La Manic" and "Anyhow" once... I was hoping, that we will hear them yesterday...
But: I didn't want to complain here. I was pleased. And I think, 99.9% of all the other audiences was Feeling the same way yesterday Night.
It was simply another great Leonard Cohen-Concert. He's a truely Performer, in the best Way of meaning!
See you maybe in Montreux, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna or Zürich!

PS: It was (for me) one of the best LC-Concert on German Ground (it has a lot to do with the crowd, with the Audience....
I don't want to blame anybody with this; but everybody feels a little diffenrence in the crowd, from Country to Country, and in the Country from North to the South, from East to the West.
That's why we go on hollydays to learn about other cultures: to see and learn about other way of lifes. But last Night, you can feel, that something is different as it was at the other Concert on German ground, that I have ever seen (in Switzerland, every Performer have really a much more difficult Job, because "my own People", the Swiss People, don't spend "a big Hand", they are very "reserved", very "cold" in a Way... they don't want to "spotting out" from the crowd: everybody wants to be "cool". A Performer has to work very, very hard, before he gets a Standing Ovation; I was in a lot of Concerts in Switzerland for many, many different Artists. And believe me: it is really a hard Place for every Artist. But as I say before; even in a very small Country like mine, the French- or Italian-speaking-Part of Switzerland is absolutely and totaly different.... but, there is nothing bad at this at all. This are just the differences in the Cultures, in the "way of Life"; that's simply the Way it is... nothing to do against this, and it is ok).

Uwe, Switzerland (please forgive my bad english, but I am soooo tired....... Leonard is definitely fiter!!)

Thank you very much, Mr. Leonard Cohen, Sharon, Hattie, Charley, Mitch, Javier, Roscoe, Rafael, Alexandru, Neil and all the UHTC-Members in the background!
It was a genuine pleasure, as always, when your "Working for a Smile".... (sorry, want to attach some Fotos, but it didn't work...)

A really great concert, again.
And it was a so much better atmosphere than in Mönchengladbach last year(not that Leonard was bad then, but the venue was awful).
What made me a bit sad were Leonard´s hints, that this might be the last time he plays in Germany. I just refuse to believe it. He´s so incredibly vibrant and fit as a fiddle, he just can´t retire.
He played til half past eleven and did "Closing time" again, as well as "I tried to leave you", which are my favourite songs to end a L.C. concert (and he didn´t play them in Mönchengladbach :( ).
So I fell asleep humming "Come healing" and woke up still humming "Come healing" and still grinning like mad :D :D :D :D :D

I can't help thinking that this is getting to be a bit of a bad habit on the part of UHTC - they seem to delay now even where most people are in their seats on time. As word gets out that the concerts always start 10-15 minutes late, so some audience members will adjust their arrival (or drinking) times accordingly so there will always be people who are not in their seats whatever time Leonard & co come on stage. And a delay can be counter production: in London, there were people LEAVING their seats to go and get another drink when they announced that the concert would start in 10 minutes. Result: fewer rather than more people in their seats.

Unless there is a specific reason for a delay such as the exceptionally large crowds still waiting outside to collect their new tickets following the change of venue at Wembley last September, I do think they should go ahead and start the concert on time.

One of the stewards at the front in London told me that Leonard and his band wait until the arena is 80% full before they come on stage. I thought he was joking at the time, but it looks as if he was possibly correct. He said it was supposed to start at 7.30 - but it started about 20 minutes later. The end result of this was - due to the O2 curfew - Leonard missed off a couple of the usual songs at the end - Closing Time and I Tried to Leave You. So we need to get to our seats promptly! Bums on seats = more songs!!

i would guess forum members are always in their seats well before the advertised showtime- unfortunately your wise message won't reach the the other 10 - 15000 people in these huge venues !

Well, most things have already been said, so what can I say?

I just enjoyed this evening so much - Leonard and the band members really gave us the impression, that they also enjoyed it, again and again we could see them smile, which I haven't seen this often on the other concerts.
Lover lover lover was just great - standing ovations and a never-want-to-end-applause was one of the highlights of the show.
Sitting in the fourth row on Javiers side, I also could hear some problems with the sound, but not often and I also think that they fixed it after several songs.

It just was another genius evening, my colleague who had her first Leonard Cohen concert yesterday, couldn't stop the tears, because she was touched so much by the music.
I also enjoyed to talk to other fans.

So, I can't wait to see Leonard in Brussels this Sunday, but at the same time, I'm so afraid, that maybe it could be my last Leonard Cohen concert...

I am developing an unhealthy fascination with Google Translate, yes I am.
Concert Critic: Leonard Cohen - Preacher and Seducer

Oberhausen. Leonard Cohen is enjoying his tour - perhaps the last - to the fullest. And he promises to give everything. The 78-year-old Canadian was on stage in Oberhausen for three hours. In a retrospective that was sometimes wistful, sometimes defiant, Cohen highlighted the fixed points of his career.
