Leonard Cohen at The Trust in 1970

Post by jarkko »

Hi Jarkko
You and visitors to the site will be interested in an article in this newsletter: http://www.swlstg-tr.nhs.uk/publication ... g_2009.asp.
It is about a gig that LC did in 1970 just before the Isle of Wight. It was in a mental hospital. He says some things that haven't been published before about his songs.

"Henderson Asylum Blues" has a certain ring to it, don't you think? ;-)

Interesting tale. I'm glad the recordist has kept his word.

So much of an artist's public life is readily downloadable on demand these days it's good to know there are a few inaccessible nooks and crannies out there.

I wonder how long Mr Milne will be able to hold out now that his cache is public knowledge though?

Makes you wonder how many more of these priceless gems are out there.

Thank you Jarkko for posting this!

What a great article. I wonder if he will ever give permission for the concert to be published.

Hi

Alas, I didn't save a PDF of it either...
But some research brought me here:

http://www.pettrust.org.uk/index.php?op ... Itemid=140
6. Ian Milne
Just before Christmas we learned of the death of Ian Milne.

Ian was the music-loving psychiatric nurse who happened to have a reel to reel tape recorder to hand in 1970 when Leonard Cohen visited the Henderson Hospital to play a concert for the residents. Ian wrote later:
I remember Stuart Whiteley coming into the Community Meeting at the Henderson saying "some guy called Leonard Cohen wanted to come and sing for the community". Stuart obviously did not realise the significance of this, and neither did I because I recorded it and stored it under the stairs for years.
Archivist Craig Fees writes:
"The tape came up casually in a telephone conversation about Dennie Briggs and the Henderson Hospital, and after Ian heard my jaw hit the floor he agreed to let the Archive have it professionally digitised. That was in 2005.
http://www.pettrust.org.uk/index.php?op ... Itemid=358
PETT Archivist Craig Fees writes: "Today I celebrate Ian Milne and all the Ian Milnes of the world who love in their time and create doors of love to be opened when needed and when the future is ready to open them."

The explanatory note below is from the Therapeutic Community Open Forum website
Ian Milne, 14th February 2006 Henderson Hospital 1970
I remember Stuart Whiteley coming into the Community Meeting at the Henderson saying "some guy called Leonard Cohen wanted to come and sing for the community".
Stuart obviously did not realise the significance of this, and neither did I because I recorded it and stored it under the stairs for years. Only last year did I rescue it and gave a copy to the PETT archives. It is not for public release but if you visit the archives Craig might just play it to review its quality.
Leonard Cohen was very excited the day before the Isle of Wight Concert and sang songs which were not recorded until a few years after. He was happy and sang happily "Songs to live to". He also told us the story of each song. Ian Milne

"I really want to say that this is the audience that we have been looking for, and I never felt so good playing for people"
(Leonard Cohen after "Famous Blue Raincoat", the closing song of the event).

Please note: For standard copyright reasons these recordings can't be released or published, although they can be made available onsite for individual study. It is also worth noting that Ian Milne, a nurse at the Henderson Hospital, asked Mr. Cohen's permission before making his recording, and that Mr. Milne owns coyright in the recording as such.

Brilliant! Thank you so much Hartmut. I had the same thought and tried to find it on web.archive.org but failed miserably. Wayback machine to the rescue indeed!

Thanks a million, Hartmut.

I remember Sylvie Simmons said on her twitter that she did enjoy the recording of this mental hospital gig. Hope one day the bootleg will be released to us.
