Re: CONCERT REPORTS: Dublin Sept 11, 12, 14 & 15, 2012
A very subdued crowd at last night's concert. They did not even respond to his synthesiser playing in Tower of Song. Were there more "purists" there or was it sadness at being the last concert. There were also less dancers during Take this Waltz. The first set on Tuesday and the second set on Thursday were for me the best.

Overview
Artist: Leonard Cohen
Venue: Royal Hospital Kilmainham
Year: 2012
Location: Dublin
Date: September 11th
Pros:
Seeing an absolute legend in action
Cons:
So cold. So very cold.
Our Dee braved the cold and damp to witness Leonard Cohen in action, and found it a remarkable and magical experience.

Having been sitting on Leonard Cohen tickets for months, it was a delight when the day of the concert finally arrived.
With gates open at 4pm (though the show didn’t start until after 7), a lot of people swarmed in and had a munch from one of the many delicious stalls, while others felt more like being a nuisance and arriving later on after the concert had started. At a seated event, it’s pretty irritating when people in front of you are fussing over finding their place and you can’t see past their raincoats. If there’s any advice to give to someone attending an outdoor concert, it’s this: WEAR EVERYTHING YOU OWN. The cold was more distracting than anything else, even when you are wearing boots, jeans, two t-shirts, a cardigan, a raincoat, a scarf and a hat.
Otherwise the craic was mighty. Leonard is a wonder to behold. He is, in every sense of the word, a gentleman. He took off his hat to introduce his band, referred to the audience as ‘friends’ and genuinely seemed to appreciate that everyone was there to see him. He sang all the old favourites, ‘Dance Me To The End of Love’, ‘Bird On A Wire’, ‘Everybody Knows’, ‘Sisters of Mercy’, ‘Tower of Song’, ‘Suzanne’, ‘I’m Your Man’, ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’, ‘So Long Marianne’, ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Closing Time’ to name but a few. A man that holds a dignified, zen-like air; his speaking voice is as soothing and emotional as his singing voice and several people in the crowd were quite literally weeping. When you take the man’s age in to account (he’s 77 years young) it makes him somewhat more awe-inspiring, especially when he danced off the stage before the interval. It could be said that he is a living legend. In fact; it has to be said.
The venue suited the music perfectly. There is something magical about being at an outdoor event, and Kilmainham was a stunning choice.
As for value for money (although we would say that it was a priceless experience), it is not cheap. Almost 180 beans for two tickets, the train from Cork, a place to lay your head for the night, and of course a browse around some shops and feeding yourself; it all adds up. However, if you ever get a chance to see Leonard Cohen live, jump at it. We are fortunate that he graces our fine island quite a bit. You’ll leave the concert and just want to go back in again. You’ll go home and listen to his music. You’ll want to go for a pint with the man who seems to be the most dead-on guy ever.

I was there on Tuesday too. Leonard was fantastic, and so was his band, and the venue. I struggled to part with nearly 90+euro for a tickets. But he played for 3 hours, 30+ songs, which makes it 3euro a song....well worth hearing him live for that price. His voice is extraordinary. The atmosphere is friendly and something close to a "happening".

Last night was my favourite concert of the four nights and for me 2nd only to Lissadell. The crowd were more respectful, not subdued IMO. Of course as usual a few crazies for the encores but I loved it even with someone was literally digging her nails into my shoulders in the hope I'd let her into my position at the barrier. I loved when Leonard asked the crew on stage at the end. Home now and the process of checking photos of the magical week begins and writing reviews and posts for my blog. Will link everything as soon as I can.

Hi Gwen, it was great meeting you last night. We were sitting beside you and didn't let the celebs behind us put us off Leonard!! At last I have managed to put a face on someone else from this forum!! I was beginning to believe it was all the work of ONE very fertile imagination! I agree that last night was absolutely fantastic. Leonard was in rare form as were the whole band. I also thank others who commented on my "Lament for Dino". I gave Alex more eartime last night and now accept that he is a great addition to the whole setup (I DO still miss Dino though!) Oh I really hope we'll "walk this floor" again next year and welcome Leonard back again........here's hoping!musicmania wrote:Last night was my favourite concert of the four nights and for me 2nd only to Lissadell. Great meeting you to! It took all my self control during Hallelujah to not turn around and tell them to STFU! But hey, they can't take away from the wonderful night though maybe Charlie Bird and Niall Stokes behind us would have been better Thanks for letting me escape out for the encores BTWAido wrote: Hi Gwen, it was great meeting you last night. Re: CONCERT REPORTS: Dublin Sept 11, 12, 14 & 15, 2012
LC concert - Saturday 15th
Like Tuesday's concert, last night's was superb. If possible, I enjoyed Leonard and the musicians even more last night - not because I thought Tuesday's performance was any less but because I was less overwhelmed by the overall experience of being there. I was able to focus on and immerse myself even more fully in the music. It might have appeared that, en masse, the audience was subdued but my experience of it was that so many around me were savouring and relishing every moment of it, it gave the atmosphere an air of quiet reverence.
I do become a bit of a nazi purist at LC's concerts. I understand people have different ways of enjoying the experience but having to endure a couple of women nattering on about hairdos during some of the earlier tracks made me wonder why they hadn't just bought a cd instead and chatted somewhere else over lattes and muffins. Anyway, apart from throwing them some choice looks and motioning them to shush, I got over myself and basked in the genius of sound coming from that stage.
I did begin to grieve towards the end, always do, knowing Leonard and these great artists are moving on to gift another country with their sublime talent.
One heart warming aside - I was sitting beside a couple who had never been to hear LC live before; they weren't even that familiar with his songs apart from a number of his more well known tracks. From the get go they were blown away.
Till next time, thank you Leonard Cohen, the band and all those involved who worked to make this year's concerts in RHK so wonderful.

Re: CONCERT REPORTS: Dublin Sept 11, 12, 14 & 15, 2012
I was there on Wed night and was overwhelmed once again by the experience. I also thought about going again , but in the end it did not work out for me. I would have to point out though that this was the wettest summer in living memory and Lenny got 4 dry evenings in Dublin. A miracle in itself. I do love this forum and the videos posted. I thought Sharons performance of Alexandra Leaving was for me the best thing about the night . Meeting Michael D , our beloved president was also good. However I think that Democracy was my highlight. I also love that Heart with No Companion is now a regular almost in the set. RHK is the best outdoor venue I believe. Lissadell was dreadful in my opinion. I hated the amount of drinking that went on and the constant movement to and from the bar. I also think I would be happy to see the next gigs, if there are any, back in the Point. Its too much for the performers to perform outdoors here in Ireland. Farewell Lenny and co. Until we meet again.

I quite agree cohenadmirer. As I said in my original post, YouTube has its place. HOWEVER, my point was that people should not JUDGE performances - whether Leonard or anyone else - of the strength of the YouTube clips. Even the best quality video can only give you a few minutes of a show at a time, and then not the whole breadth of the performance during that one song.cohenadmirer wrote:Absolutely not a substitute , but it's all some people have as well of course as the reports on here.

Sure nothing can compare to the actual concert experience . My next one is in barcelona .What's more if i can believe my ticket invoice i seem to be close to the centre of the first row so no distractions , i hope, from people who would prefer to wander about rather than pay full attention to leonard and the bandMabeanie1 wrote:I quite agree cohenadmirer. Yes indeed Wendy, another great show in Dublin lastnight. Leonard also thanked the people who came from far away I am already home in The Netherlands savouring the memory and loving the reports.Mabeanie1 wrote:Another great show in Dublin tonight - the best of the four IMHO (or maybe it was just the show where I was least bothered by drunks, talkers and screaming banshees ....)
Going Home snuck back in to the setlist and we enjoyed the tour debut of Anyhow, complete with new lyrics (but not the new words Leonard has been singing all week in soundcheck!!) Anyhow followed I'm Your Man and Leonard's delivery of the two songs was very similar. Very tongue in cheek ....
Wendy
I found the tour debut of Anyhow really exceptional; his voice so very very deep and this wonderful expression on his face and a glint in his eyes so every now and then. I really hope that someone has captured it with the new lyrics on Video!!!
Even from row CCC with people moving in and out in front of me blocking my view, talking loudly, shouting and me being stoppen from going up front for the encores, it was a wonderful, wonderful evening. The sound is just exquisite wherever you sit. The overview over the whole venue from back there was just beautiful with wonderful wide skies over the podium with this music was just magical.
There is indeed the wonder for the weather just holding out for Leonard Cohen concerts, cold but dry in Dublin for all 4 concerts. This wonder also happened in Gent and in Amsterdam.
