Charles, Prince of Wales, who also was at the Westminster Abbey event, is a big fan of Leonard Cohen. :D

I prefer times when Prince Ch. had to explain to his sons (obviously with no idea who he was talking about) that "there is a chap called Leonrad Cohen".

Thanks Arlene for posting this. What an honour for Rufus to perform this for the Queen.
Prince Charles must have been pleased.

Another nice quote in Marie Claire UK
I always enjoy seeing ...royal...beautiful version...Leonard Cohen
As part of the service the royal guests were treated to a beautiful version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah by Canadian singer Rufus Wainwright.

Amber, 11 What a day! It was so much fun. The Queen looked so nice and friendly.

The singer Rufus Wainwright was amazing and he sung Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'. I really liked the song and it made me tearful and emotional.

rufus reveals all - leonard's sister esther recommended baby

Post by sebmelmoth2003 »

from today's independent on sunday :

Rufus Wainwright: 'I am somewhat imprisoned by my fabulous career'

Hailing from folk royalty, Rufus Wainwright has happily toured the world almost all his life. But how is he managing to combine stardom with the commitments of fatherhood?..

...Wainwright and Cohen had talked about having a baby together for years, but they were waiting for the right time. "And this was definitely it. I was about to experience the most devastating loss I'd ever known, and on Lorca's end, the family had just rehabilitated themselves after Leonard had lost everything. [Cohen claimed his former business manager had stolen £9.5m of his earnings.] Happily, I was able to ask my mother what she thought of the whole concept and she was extremely positive. In fact, she ordered me to do it"

Wainwright also sought the opinion of Lorca's aunt Esther, Leonard's older sister. "She told me: 'Rufus, there are plenty of women in this world who would cut off their right arm to have a child with you. Don't you forget that'"...

I saw Rufus sing "Hallelujah" live when he was supporting Brian Wilson in Cork, and he put on a great show. However, it bugs me that in this kind of setting the song is being treated merely as a modern day hymn, when the irony, dark humour and life-experience that Leonard adds to the song are missing. On the other hand it's probably best that the wider public don't know Leonard's version, because if they did they would probably turn up at concerts just to hear it, and then talk through the rest of the concert!

rufus wainwright - loose ends - bbc radio 4.

Post by sebmelmoth2003 »

i'm amazed he has any time to think/compose - he spends a lot of time promoting himself.

tonight he'll be on loose ends.

Rufus Wainwright...talking about his glittering career, sumptuous, theatrical stage shows, Prima Donna's and becoming a dad. He'll be treating us to a performance of 'Out Of The Game' from his album of the same name.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01gd4m0

here's how he sang that song on the graham norton show.

Rufus - loose ends

Post by sebmelmoth2003 »

about 30 minutes into the show : leonard namechecked by clive in regard to a daunting bio-history which may predispose rufus's daughter to follow the family trade.

...safe lets slip that one track is by rufus wainwright who visited her while she recorded at abbey road studios in st john's wood with an 84-piece orchestra.

"he loved it. he said, `oh you've changed the key there. i like that. oh you've got this massive horn section. i like that. put it on your album, make sure it goes on your album`"

google her name for further details, if interested.

there's a long feature on her in the hampstead and highgate express, thursday june 28, 2012.

it's on page 2 of the etcetera supplement.

graham norton - leonard cohen fan?

Post by sebmelmoth2003 »

i heard graham norton on bbc radio 5 saying how much he liked "dance me to the end of love".

i got the impression that leonard might have been positively mentioned in graham's latest novel although i haven't read it yet.
