I'm Your Man Trailer makes teenagers laugh hysterically

My brother, my sister, my cousins and their friends always start cracking up whenever they hear certain lines:

He spent days on every line. He said he spends a year looking at a song.

He's got this profetic, almost biblical significance.

My reputation as a ladies' man was a joke. It caused me to laugh bitterly through the 10,000 nights I spent alone.

You abondon your masterpiece and you sink into the real masterpiece.

He has you at all stages of your life.

And Antony's performance of If It Be Your Will
They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom

That's okay... they'll grow older and maybe not laugh quite so hard ;-) .

Lizzy,

If the above characterization is inaccurate, please say so and I'll apologize. :)

Re. Antony's performance, i.m.o., it was great. If the late Elvis had covered this song during
some better times in his life, I think he could have done the song justice, as well. Yeah,
I'm serious. Elvis did some great gospel covers and the emotionality of "If It Be Your
Will," is similar to some of those.

And on the other end of the spectrum, I found Antony's performance very moving and the most memorable of all those I saw in the film... Leonard's always excepted.

I agree with Steve about Elvis covering If It Be Your Will. I think he would also have made a good job of most of what's on Death Of A Ladies Man. The music there (with the Phil Spector influence) has a few trademarks of gospel. I love the madness, the feelings of religous possession you get from some of Leonard's songs on DOALM. Paulo Conti would also make a great job of much of the LC song book.

Hi Mark,

I've never heard DOALM in its entirety because I remember Leonard Cohen, shortly
after its release, saying something to the effect that he regarded it as an
embarrassment (in an interview). I figured that if he felt that way, I'd
probably not like it. If people here now tell me to go and buy it, I'll probably
listen. And as you agree with me about conjecturing how an Elvis cover of
"If It Be Your Will" would qualitatively have turned out, there's no doubt
that you'd agree that he could have aced "Hallelujah," also. I'm not familiar
with Paulo Conti.

I was wondering who Paulo Conti is, too. I love Elvis's ballads and Christmas songs... and agree on how he'd have done with both songs mentioned here. It's a shame he's not still alive. Yes, Steven... go buy it.

OK guys, my turn to introduce you to someone in my top 10. He is not so far behind Leonard in style and grace and cool! Musically there are similariteies, lyrically I don't know what's going on because it is in Italian, but I feel his joy and his pain in my soul. Check him out on the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxOqE1bEA_Q

I think he has the perfect voice for covering LC. I would love to see a Paolo Conti cover of anything by LC even more than I would like to have seen Elvis tackling Death Of A Ladies Man! Let me know what you think of Paolo.

Steven, I knew a beautiful girl who went by the name of Sara Nemec, she had the face of an angel, the body of an Amazonian and the voice of a Siren. Her version of Hallelujah is the best I've ever heard. Send me your email address and I will upload it to you, the same goes for you Lizzy. And yes, Elvis would have aced it! Please get hold of DOALM and listen to it in its entirety, the album is bitter sweet throughout, full of irony. The poetry is magnificent. As much as I like the production values on DOALM, I would like to hear it paired down to just Leonard and a guitar with Julie and Perla on backing vocals. What a gift that would be to us Cohenites! I know, let's start a campaign! Anyone feel like tackling Jarkko on this subject? Come on blonde madonna, put your shoulder to the wheel!

I agree with the comment about Elvis doing "If It be your Will" Like "Crying In the Chapel" but not. As for Antony I love his cover of this song but is he kind of "Joe Cocker like' And for some of the comments about leonard Cohen in "I'm your man" I don't quite get what Bono is saying. And i agree with lizzy, some things are just generational.

Friends,

I'm going to be buying DOALM, after all of these years. :)

Mark,

Thanks for the offer to pass along the music you spoke of, but for at least the
time being, I'm going to decline primarily because of computer issues.
Re. the paring down (or maybe taring down of the "wall of sound," couldn't resist, sorry), I've wondered why Leonard Cohen didn't do so over the years with the songs of DOALM, if he continued to feel that they had been hijacked by the producer. I'll check out the link to Paolo Conti.

Hi,

I bought and listened to DOALM. I can understand why Leonard Cohen spoke
of it as he had when it was released. Some of the production rises to the level
of desecration of his poetry, i.m.o.

Please do give it more than one listen, though, Steven. The more you listen, the more you adjust and hear past the desecration.
