The door to LC's room is for sale :)

Sweet street salvation: Hotel Chelsea doors to be auctioned

April 2, 2018 | Filed under: News, Community | Posted by: The Villager

Walking along W. 23rd St. between Seventh and Eighth Aves., one is confronted by the scaffolding and construction work that has gone on continually at the Hotel Chelsea since 2011. As dumpster loads fill up outside the hotel, architectural details from the place, along with relics of the building’s rich historic past, are carted off to distant dumping places.
Jim Georgiou, a former tenant of the hotel from 2002 to 2011, was resourceful enough to preserve a portion of this debris, 55 doors that formerly graced the Hotel Chelsea’s rooms. Many iconic figures from America’s literary, film, music and art worlds dwelled behind these doors.

It was in Room 424, where Janis Joplin and Leonard Cohen had their rendez-vous.

Maarten,
I remember about seven years ago that you visited this room, and there is still visual evidence of that event ;-)

Hi Bev

Thanks for the info! Of course, at $5000, this is a real bargain! 🙄

I remember the last time I visited the Chelsea in December 2010 there was a new doormat on top of the old one and just for a second I wondered how and if I would have been able to get my hands on the old Chelsea Hotel doormat as a souvenir... 🙂. Luckily, the mat was too big to even consider taking it home to Belgium.

hehe! On reflection, a doormat would have been easier to acquire and store than a door .... and very much less expensive ;-)

The most is from the concert in Amsterdam 1988, but I did some editing in the first 20 seconds.
They used it during the Plaque Dedication Ceremony at the Chelsea Hotel, and the text in the Amsterdam performance was not suitable for the Ceremony :D .
You can listen to the original version now, below the picture of Janis here https://www.icantforget.nl/CHotel.html

Wybe, Thanks for that explanation about the audio.
I knew it was from the 1988 concerts with the first sentence from London and then most of Amsterdam (of course ;-) ) but I couldn't remember the reason I heard it from you those years ago. As you reminded me, it was the plaque dedication :) I'm guessing it is still out front of the building. The renovations completion date has been put back until early 2019: http://chelseanow.com/2018/02/construct ... 9-opening/

A couple more links about theses doors -

Chelsea Hotel's storied doors go on auction thanks to homeless man
“When you’re homeless, a door takes a great meaning, a great significance.
It’s a portal to a home that a homeless person doesn’t have,” Ettinger told AFP.

Georgiou no longer lives on the street as friends have provided him accommodation.
But even though he has little money, he will donate half of the proceeds from the auction to City Harvest, which distributes uneaten food from New York restaurants and markets to people in need.

It's a bit surreal looking at doors to nowhere .... and somewhere .... the innermost door.

I know christineanne has just started a new thread about this in the News Section -https://www.leonardcohenforum.com/viewt ... =3&t=37969
but I thought it would be a good idea to keep all the info together here to complete this thread -
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43750766
The door to US singer Bob Dylan's room at the iconic Chelsea Hotel in New York has sold at auction for $100,000 (£70,000).
It was one of 50 doors from the hotel, where a host of stars stayed over the years, to be sold.

The door to a room used by singers Janis Joplin and Leonard Cohen during an affair, as well as the singer Joni Mitchell, fetched $85,000.
