Hello fellow Cohenites,
I am new here and I have a question. As a non-native English speaker I don't understand "... And no one that you hurt could ever heal ..." (You want it darker) well enough. Does it mean: a. "No one whom you hurt could ever heal" or b. "No one by whom you have been hurt could ever heal"? Do you think of this you as a violator or as a victim?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Meaning of: "And no one that you hurt could ever heal"?

Hi Gisa,
I think that this is my favourite line in the song, maybe my favourite on the whole album.
To me, what I feel when I listen, is that I am the violator. How horrible would it be if when we hurt other people, that they would stay hurt forever. What a dark and cold thought.
The line is also a reminder that people do heal, just like the sun will come up again and the stars will stay safely pinned in the night sky.

I also totally agree with Cate. This song is for me one of the most beautiful songs about love and compassion ever written.

Cate, what a beautiful interpretation. Thank you. I think it is one of the most important songs on the album, and your comment helps ty it all together.
