Well you have excellent taste in music!
Welcome to the Forum.
I like playing guitar, singing (poorly), writing (poorly too haha),
oh wouldn't life be such a bore if you were good at everything?

btw - I just listened to your cover of Dress Rehearsal Rag and thought it was very good.

Thank you for the kind welcome, Cate! Hah, I suppose you're right as there'd be nothing to spend time improving.

Thanks, that is very nice of you. I still need to improve singing (Progress is very slow :( ) but I hope someday I will be of some skill level to perform to a small group of people or something :P

Welcome and hi from me, too, Cihan. Laughed at your parenthetical comments about lurking here  ~ seems there oughta be a better word for it, eh? I'll listen to your song later. It's one that's not covered nearly enough, so thanks right out of the box for taking it on 8) .

I'll say that I merely basked in the warm glow of your conversations :P That's a little less of a "Guy in the shadows under the light of the moon" kind of vibe haha. Thanks, I love DRR, it's a very powerful song, and I was initially pretty nervous about the idea of playing/singing it, but once I began all the fears and anxieties of the situation just disappeatred

More or less new here as well (but old everywhere else).
Have followed for years but only today signed up.
Been an admirer of Leonard since I first met him at my sister's birthday party in Montreal back in the early 60's.
Yeah, I was only a kid at the time but you know how it is...SOME people make an impression.
So here I am at last.

Cheers!

AJOHMS, thanks for your interesting anecdote. Do you still live in Montreal? We visited it for the first time last fall and loved it, also managed to see some "Leonard landmarks" with the help of a gracious woman from this forum. Glad you signed in, there is a lot of of information and material here if you browse around.

Not in Montreal anymore. Left for good in 1978.
Leonard is a good friend of one of my sister's former husbands who still lives on de Bullion in Montreal just around the corner from Leonard's old house.
It was not uncommon to run into him when I was still living there in the mid-70's.
Frequently encountered him at the Rainbow Bar and Grill or Darwin's (two of my favourite haunts which, alas, are no more).
Interesting story...last time I saw him at Darwin's (1977) he was with his wife and they had a bit of a tiff on the back patio. Nothing major but you could tell they were discussing something serious so no one was bothering them. He escorted her out then came back ten minutes later to sit by himself and finish his drink.
We chatted for a few minutes before he left and that was that.
I really miss living in Montreal in those days.

Hi, there:
Just joined this evening. Only recently started discovering and becoming a fan of Leonard and his work. I like alot of his earlier stuff (Suzanne, Avalanche, etc)..can listen to it for hours. :) His more recent music may take more time for me to warm up to, but I'll get there! :) I guess I like the music of the younger Leonard Cohen. *shrugs* Just hard to explain why, at the moment, as to why his earlier work resonates with me more.
His poems are very beautiful, and I'm trying to track down copies of Beautiful Losers and The Favorite Game.

Hi Christine, welcome.

You will find a lot of information here if you explore around a bit. Like you I was attracted more to LC's early work than his later music, in my case because I became familiar with his music when LC first emerged circa 1970. To this day my favorite albums are the first three, and if I had to pick a top favorite it would be Songs of Love and Hate. However, a wonderful thing happens when you begin to spend time listening to his subsequent music, you find that it is just as captivating even though often quite different musically. I hope you too will find this to be the case, happy listening.

Aww, thanks 4inthemorning! Yeah, I' was listening to some of his more recent stuff (via Cohencentric.com) last night and you're right: his voice, now, is very captivating, even hypnotic! :D
I also listened to Death of a Ladies Man last night, and even though I seem to remember reading that Leonard mentioning in an interview that this was not his favorite, I thought the album was very beautiful. Very sad at times, but beautiful. :)

Then we take Berlin: A formal introduction

Post by Sandra Tenanten »

Hello all,

I am a proud Canadian currently living in Berlin. I'm teaching English literature here, and of course as a good Canadian girl, I love throwing a little Cohen into my course outline whenever I can.

I admire LC's music, literature, and poetry. So talented and so diverse.

So, I am here to engage in wonderfully stimulating discussions with like-minded LC admirers. Glad to be here and look forward to talking to you all soon!
