Dear Wijbe ~

I don't know what you did, but thank you for doing it. I was able to view your marvelous, your fantastic photo montage this time.

Thank you so much for using Leonard's earlier songs for its background. They brought the nostalgia that seeing him on this closing tour of 2008-2010 brought. You have found the most beautiful of what was in Vegas, the scenes, the people, Leonard and his group... and you have put it together in such professional and interesting ways. I can't believe some of the views of buildings and the city you got. Everything merges so beautifully. I love the two opening shots of Leonard's women and him onstage. Everything, Wijbe, was such a delight to watch. It made me wish I'd had more time to actually meet and talk with people. That's always such an integral part of every gathering for any reason. Yet, it was not to be this time around. Next time.

The way you brought yourself home, back to Amsterdam gave us such great contrast of where you'd been and to where you've now returned. I really cannot express how thoroughly I enjoyed watching your montage. Splendid is a word that's only for starters.

Thank you for taking so much time and such great care in selecting from your hundreds of photos and then timing them so well with Leonard's songs. Might this be your best video yet? Quite possibly. I know I went into a dreamy state watching it.

Love,
Lizzy

Since I got back almost two weeks ago I've been trying to gather my thoughts about the concert, the tour, my holiday...here goes...

It was Christmas Holidays two years ago that I began to discover Leonard Cohens music. I did know who he was previous to that, I just didn't like his music very much. When I was complaining to my brother that summer 2008 was not a good year for concerts he had suggested why don't I go and see Leonard Cohen in Kilmainham? My response was to say, "no way, he's ancient and it's outdoors, ugh"! Needless to say, I thoroughly regretted that decision, and vowed that I had to see him live!!

And here I am, two years later, I've been to see 9 concerts in 6 countries!! It's been a lovely journey and it's been so nice to meet so many from the forum along the way and especially to travel with Somewhat-Nifty. She's a wonderful traveling companion and someone I would consider a good friend...to think we met through the internet!

The auditorium was really really comfortable, more should be guild like it. The view of the stage was perfect even from 9 rows back! :D it was nice being in the middle too as I could see all the band in my field of vision. My definite highlight was 'Everybody Knows' LC looked to be really enjoying himself and putting his definite all into it. It seemed to me that all the musicians played out of their skins that night.

The atmosphere at half time was strange to say the least, different to any concert I've been to before. A real mix of excitement, dread, sadness, pride. Seeing the huge queue for the ladies in the Collosseum Nifty and I escaped to the ladies in the casino and on the way back we met Leonard's son Adam in the foyer. He was taking pictures of people posing infront of the big picture of Leonard. I had bumped into him in Heathrow the day I was traveling to Las Vegas (how very random!) and he was very kind and said a few words and when I met him in the lobby he recognized me from the airport. Again he was very kind and introduced us to his friends and Jessica.

I expected the second half to build to a steady crescendo like it usually does but that night I think the first half had more vitality than the second. All the same it was wonderful music and I really enjoyed the audience reactions too. Two examples: A man came back late from the break just as LC was starting Suzanne and he bumped against the lady in the row in front. She turned around and basically slapped him on the hip saying, 'half time is over! get in your seat! go!' I thought she had a point but there was probably no need for assult!! :) The second example (unfortunately I can't remember what song it happened after) but everyone got up to give an immediate standing ovation except the people in my row. I looked left and right, the lady on my right (who had been munching on some sweets or pop corn most of the night (though quietly!) had tears in her eyes, so did her partner, the man on my left and his partner were looking awe struck and I must've looked something the same. They all basically couldn't move! I've never seen people so truely blown away it was really amazing!

It was lovely to meet everyone afterwards in the Sea Horse, for the lucky few who got backstage to meet with Leonard, WOW! As most of my friends have managed to meet with Leonard at this stage (I'm probably not a fan for long enough! ) the opportunity would have been nice but I do think regardless of whether he tours again (hopefully he will want to) I'm so glad to be able to say that I've been witness to Leonard Cohen performing live. (and in some beautiful surroundings, especially Sligo) It's a cliche I know but he is a living legend. He has the words AND the music!! It's wonderful for fans who have been 'in it' since 1960's to be able to see him live now, but it's equally as wonderful for a 'newbie' like myself to discover him and then get to see him live too!

I had hoped the last concert would be in New York as it's half the flying time and a great city but Las Vegas brought about the opportunity for me to visit with family whom I'd never met before. That is probably one of the biggest benefits of being a Leonard Cohen fan for this concert!! I discovered that I have a cousin living and working in Las Vegas who kindly collected us from the airport and took us to our hotel. We didn't make it to the Friday concert because we spent the day with him seeing the sights and it was a lovely day. From LV I made it to Sacramento for more cousins and then onto San Francisco for even more cousins!! (A wonderful wonderful trip and it cushioned the blow of post concert blues somewhat!) Since my great-grandmothers sister emigrated to the US in the 1900's I am the first of the 'Irish' side of the family to every visit them in California. My grandmother and her first cousin in San Francisco wrote letters to each other through out their whole lives but they never met each other, both are gone now and we lost contact in the 1990's when they passed on. So, it was great to bridge that gap again. So, not only does LC indirectly create friendships he brings family closer together too!!

This was an unforgettable trip with so many laughs along the way, thanks to Jarkko and the moderators for their continued hard work and of course for LC for getting out there and going back on the road!

Wijbe,
Your slide show managed to make 'the most unmagical of places' seem almost magical! I didn't want it to end.

Albert and Marie,
I loved all the photos, and as always, the videos are so well done and so very much appreciated!

Gallina, Lisa, Ruth, and to all others who have posted their thoughts and reviews here,
Every word you have put down was read with so much gratitude.

Thank you all for each and every input (I even loved all the contentious ones ;-) )!

Wishing everyone all the best of everything in this coming New Year!

With the warmest regards,
Mary
