Cohen Sets Date For Sligo Concert

Canadian troubadour Leonard Cohen is to perform at Lissadell House in Co Sligo this summer.

The legendary songwriter's website says he will play at the venue, the ancestral home of Countess Constance Markievicz, on July 31st at 7pm.

It is the only Irish date listed as part of Cohen's European tour, which commences in Croatian capital Zagreb on July 25th and is scheduled to end in Bratislava, Slovakia, on October 13th.

Event promoter POD has yet to comment on the concert, but earlier this month the company gave notice that it intended to apply for an event licence to stage four concerts at Lissadell House between July 30th and August 2nd.

Cohen (75) played a series of concerts at the O2 in Dublin last summer and performed three times in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, in 2008.

A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cohen has become renowned for his poetic songwriting and ability to explore themes such as love, sex, death and religion. Many of his best-known songs, including Suzanne and Hallelujah , have been widely covered by other artists.

Lissadell House is currently closed to the public while a rights-of-way legal argument prevails in the High Court in Dublin between millionaire lawyer owners Edward Walsh and wife Constance Cassidy, and Sligo County Council.

Legendary Canadian songwriter Leonard Cohen has been confirmed for a one-off concert at Lissadell House in Co Sligo this summer.

Cohen (75) will play the venue, which is closely associated with WB Yeats, on July 31st.

The outdoor concert was first announced prematurely on Cohen’s website yesterday, but it was taken down.

It was finally confirmed this afternoon by Pod concerts, owned by promoter John Reynolds, and by Cohen’s agents AEG.

Reynolds was responsible for Cohen’s first concerts in Ireland for 22 years when he played three sell-out shows at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham in 2008. These were followed by five shows in Dublin and Belfast last year.

A poet and novelist himself, Cohen has long been a fan of WB Yeats, who often visited Lissadell from his nearby home in Drumcliffe.

The house, which is the former home of Countess Markievicz, is now owned by barrister Edward Walsh and his wife Constance Cassidy.

They spent €12 million restoring it, but closed it to the public last year because of a dispute with Sligo County Council over a public right of way.

The venue is likely to seat 10,000 fans. Tickets go on sale on Monday priced from €80.

A seated event, and now we have a price to go by, unless this info is not exact :?

Singer Cohen's Concert Confirmed (Belfast Telegraph 4/20/10)

Singer Cohen's Concert Confirmed

Concert promoters have confirmed what Leonard Cohen fans have been saying for days - Everybody Knows the singer-songwriter will perform in Ireland this summer.

The 75-year-old's official website, which had posted a date for Sligo this summer, was forced to hastily change the tour schedule yesterday amid concerns plans for the gig had not been signed off.

POD and AEG, the promoters keen to keep the show under wraps until today, insisted there was nothing sinister behind the badly-kept secret, "just the dotting of Is and crossing of Ts".

The Canadian, regarded by devoted fans as a poet as much as a singer, will play historic Lissadell House - the ancestral home of rebel Countess Markievicz and where WB Yeats spent time in 1893 and 1894.

The venue was chosen after Cohen, a fan and student of the poet, was given a limited-edition book of his poetry following last year's performance in Dublin.

Promoters said Cohen's management suggested they come up with a new venue after playing in the capital two years running.

"The promoters then had a chat with the owners of Lissadell, Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy, who loved the idea and agreed to make it happen," a spokeswoman said.

The couple, who have spent millions restoring the stately home, have been embroiled in a long-running rights-of-way dispute with Sligo County Council, whose officials will have to sign off on a licence for the performance.

The 10,000 all-seater concert, the first of its kind at the coastal home, takes place on Saturday July 31.

Cohen is returning to Ireland for the third time in three years after playing acclaimed shows in Kilmainham in 2008 and four shows at the O2 last year. Tickets from 80 euro go on sale on April 26.

MaryB,
POD.ie site ( Promoters ) gives ticket prices as 80 , 105 and 115 Euro, so the information in the "Irish Times" is correct. It usually is !

I booked Clarion Hotel yesterday at £80 a night, refundable with Irish brekkie!; if you go to Tripadvisor and search for Sligo hotels you can see which hotels have availability, then search for the best price. I found otel.com by far the cheapest yesterday. Good luck!

One thing I noticed about Sligo is that although it doesn't appear to be that large of a centre, they seem to have at least 20 bars or pubs...plus the hotels! Lots of spots for meetups :D and looks like some of us may be staying there up to 4 nights. If the weather is good I plan on doing a little hiking through the countryside, along with delving into Yeats!

ps..thanks carlowmike for keeping us up to date on your "bird"!
