I am just a little Frankfurt girl
wanting to thank you…

…with my four-leaf clover, wishing it may bring you luck
and health. Happy birthday, Leonard

Give up all the questions except one: “Who am I?”
After all the only part you are sure of is that you are.
The “I am” is certain, the “I am this” is not.
Struggle to find out what you are in reality.

Nisargadatta

thank you for your struggle
and for being your self

with deep gratitude

Dear Maestro,

all the best in your day and many happy, healthy years to come!

I was lucky enough to see you live twice since I live in Europe, but as a born Argentinean I want to remind that you have many, many loyal fans in the southern part of the world –there, where your birthday marks not the beginning of the autumn but the first day of spring.

Happy birthday and shana tova from another thankful fan,

Etoile

Dear Leonard,

Time again to visit this beautiful harbour of cyberspace and give my greetings to you on your birthday.

Thank you so much for the tours. This is a great gift to us. I was able to fulfill a dream long held and see you perform live.
This has satisfied and quieted a part of my soul while awakening other parts. You often do this to me with your words, music and character.

I hope to repeat this annual offering for many years to come.

Peace and happiness to you on your birthday and always.

Richard

ghosts walk the
maple streets of montreal
the writers have shut up shop
and stopped dispensing
the girls with dark lined eyes
are tired now
they no longer undress
for a promise of poetry
but turn on the radio
and drive
we have lit candles for you
at the edge of town
where the lovers
still gather

Josh

Best Wishes and Thanks for so much inspiration

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEONARD

I have measured out my life in Leonard Cohen Songs

When I first saw you Leonard in 1970 at the Isle of Wight Festival I was just 16 and have seen you many times since.......I've got you like a habit and I'll never get enough........so just one more time, please!

I was also at the Belle Vue Manchester Concert in March 1972 where I remember them filming the concert and you Leonard making comments to the effect that they were filming for posterity. I also recall you holding a bottle of wine and then pouring some of it's contents onto the stage and saying this was for us, the audience. I was quite near the front and could see the cameramen filming. I know quite a few songs from this concert made it on to the final Tony Palmer 1974 Documentary Film Bird On The Wire.

So to paraphrase a famous poet, "I have measured out my life in Leonard Cohen Songs" and you have been the background hum in my universe from fifteen to fifty-five, from adolescence to old age, One of the last songs you sang at the Manchester Belle Vue concert 36 years ago was that old chestnut "As Time Goes By", well I suppose Leonard Cohen fans appreciate such 'fundamental things' as a good song when they hear one.

I posted thion this forum after seeing Leonard last year,

I was privileged to be at the Thursday June 19th concert at The Opera House Manchester with my wife, my son and my daughter truly a transcendental moment that echoed in Eternity. Leonard Cohen has maybe achieved that remote human possibility of which he spoke of in his novel Beautiful Losers; "A saint is someone who has achieved a remote human:possibility. It is impossible to say what that possibility is. I think it has something to do with the energy of love." The energy of love was transmitted and received by the open hearted.

Happy birthday Leonard, and many more of them. X
One of my 'die happy' wishes for years was to see you live. Never really thought it would happen, but it has, 3 times. I'm so lucky! Thanks for all the poetry and wonderful songs and music and for your immense courage in being ............ just you.

Dear Leonard,

You graciously share your love and blessings and we are all better for it. This lovely poem by Rainer Maria Rilke expresses the spiritual and orgasmic feelings you stir. Happy Birthday!

Love,
Jackie

++++++++++++

What fields are fragrant as your hands?
You feel how external fragrance stands
upon your stronger resistance.
Stars stand in images above.
Give me your mouth to soften, love;
ah, your hair is all in idleness.

See, I want to surround you with yourself
and the faded expectation lift
from the edges of your eyebrows;
I want, as with inner eyelids sheer,
to close for you all places which appear
by my tender caresses now.
