When I was a teenager, here in Montreal, not speaking much english yet, I tought that «So long Marianne» referred to Marianne street, a street that actually borders Portugal Park where LC’s house is located, and that the «canadien errant» was in fact saying goodby to his hometown in the song. Even after having gained understanding of english and seing pictures of Marianne and reading about her, the song still prompted Portugal Park to my mind, somewhere at the back of my head.

This very touching interview clears for good that misunderstanding of mine by deffinitly putting a human voice as well as emotions on the name. So she does really exists.

So long to Marianne street...

Thank you Jarkko.

Marianne and Leonard

Dear all of you.
Kare just wants to tell you: I am not not Kari Hesthamar. I am the sound engineer who is responsible for the sound design in the two Norwegian radioprograms about Marianne and Leonard, - as well as the SURROUND 5.1-version of "So long, Marianne".
I have worked together with Kari for many years.
You can be sure: Kari is reading your nice words to her.
Warm regards
Kare :D

Thank you for your clarification, Kare. The very best to both of you for your excellence. You can rest assured knowing that not everyone who has read, listened to, and appreciated what you both have done, so well, is commenting here. Your names seem very well suited for how you do, what you do.

My own, warm regards,
to you both,
Lizzy

To get any pleasure out of the SURROUND 5.1 production, you’ve got to have a home cinema theatre equipment in connection with your DVD-player. If you have that, this is all you’ve got to do:
Download the DTS-file from the homepages of Norwegian Broadcasting Corp.: http://www.nrk.no/magasin/ulyd/5418814.html

De-zip the file.
Burn the de-ziped file to a CD
Put the CD into your DVD-player, and get the feeling you are in Marianne’s living room.
Good luck.

Where is the file?

Post by Philwilli » Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:04 pm

I'm not able to find the DTS file for download.I can only download
i file called dynasx.asx.When i do that i'm able to listen to the streaming
version. But i want to download the program so that i can burn it to a cd
and listen to it on my home cinema.

Ah, found it out.The DTS file has not been uploaded to the NRK site.
It's only possible to listen to the streaming version.

Oh, wow... I guess asking if this would work with listening to it, via headphones on my computer, would be moot. To be set up with all that 8) !

Usually the interviews are online only for two weeks. Kari told me that NRK promised to keep them for a whole year so that all Cohenites will be able to hear them!

Transcription of the interview with Leonard will be posted on The Files during the weekend!

Is there any way that you can 'record' for the Files the audio interview with Marianne, Jarkko ~ or does that get into copyright issues :? ?

It's great that NRK extended them that significantly 8) !!!

The streaming audio is for listening only, but capable computer oriented members know how to save it, too (it's up to the media players you're using)

.
(not from the 5.1 version)

It came out to 41meg in mp3 (- 456meg in wav).
So I'm splitting it up at what I hope are good places.
The first one is here. The rest, later.

MARIANNE AND LEONARD
Interview with Marianne Ihlen
by Kari Hesthamar, Norway, 2005
SO LONG, MARIANNE

-------------------------------------
Marianne-Kari_1.mp3
(time: 2.26 min; size: 2.3 meg
dynamics processing: classic SoftKnee; normalized to 97%)

audio source: http://www.nrk.no/programmer/radio/radi ... 15921.html
-------------------------------------

translated transcription from: http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/marianne2006.html

MARIANNE: It's very quiet on the ocean today,
or the sea… is probably what we call it.
(Movement)
Now let' see ...
Hah, imagine having the stereo deck on so low.
Opa, let's go!

Leonard Cohen: So Long, Marianne
(Marianne sings along)

MARIANNE: You know, last night…
I had a very strange dream last night.
During the past 40 years of my life I still
dream about Leonard. Irrespective of whether
he is with someone else or what the scene is around it,
it is a positive dream for me.
But last night he showed up again in my dream.
And then he says: ”Marianne, you must not talk so much.”
And here I am sitting looking at you,
and you make me talk, talk, talk, talk.
Yes, yes!

Leonard Cohen: Now so long, Marianne,
it’s time that we began
to laugh and cry and cry and laugh
about it all again

NARRATOR: ”So Long, Marianne.”
Leonard Cohen's old Norwegian sweetheart.
At last I was to hear the story behind the song.
