Dear Leonard Cohen, belated greetings for your 82nd.

I just heard the title track of your new album. Speechless.

How come it's your birthday, and we get all the gifts?

Been a while since I posted here, hello all.

I have a bi-monthly podcast I do, just an excuse to play records. Anyway, this week's episode is in tribute to Leonard on his birthday if anyone wants a listen ;)

Here's one for you, boss...

Happy birthday Dear Leonard
And thanks for all the tunes
Though thanks surely is not enough
To express my gratitude

Please forgive this tribute
Second rate as it may be
Like most I'm too poor to repay even
A shard you've given me

Throughout the years you've brought us
Much more than words can say
Yet also taught us how words can
Move Worlds in their own way

I hope you'll also forgive me
For stealing a line or two
But some say you're a living sage
And that's what Jesus would do!

Many hear you sing even when
You're busy with other things
Press play, enter undying lands
Once envisaged in your dreams

You rumble like an aftershock
Cross earthquake ravaged streets
Your voice like an old grizzly bears
A million ciggies deep

There's a song playing in the Heavens
To which you tune your mind
Like an old explorer you return
With the great treasures you find

But as all adventurers can
Get lost along the way
In places dark, in visions stark
Who'd guess how much you pay

You face the darkness head on
While others turn their backs
You know just where they're coming from
And kindly cut them slack

Through women, disappointment, loss
You've kept your dignity
Not speaking just for myself here but
You're a better man than me

Just hearing your songs make me think
That I know a thing or two
Just cos with you I agree
Funny what mind can do!

You've spent your whole life as it seems
Pouring mercy into hell
Deciphering our little human dreams
A landscape you've learned well

Speaking of silent massacres
That they wont show on the news
Equating the great sufferings
Not once to your own blues

As long as there are humans treading
Upon this old sick Earth
Your songs will stream notes to the part
That really does have such worth

Working on hearts in such a way
No doctor has or ever would
You've understood things about Man
Even most women never could

It may not mean a lot to you,
A life of immortality
But it does to those who'll hear your songs
The hordes of futures mes

Aside from nightly dreams and sleep
And this recurring daily dream
Music maybe the forth realm or
At least to me it seems

In placing speakers to my ears
I enter another World
That you somehow made in your mind
And have in mine unfurl

There's a song playing in the underworld
You can't help but descend
You dive deep for a pearl or two
And come back with the bends

Let no one say that they're easy
These waters that you swim
Let he who loves to criticize
Himself headfirst dive in

For death is up there keeping guard
On us all from Heaven's door
All trying to climb the elevator
That's heading for the lower floor

It's humbling and heartbreaking
What Time does to the old
I guess it's just what happens after
Many years in this World

And It never seems to move an inch
When we join our hands to pray
Perhaps It all ended long ago
And we're just watching the reply

Perhaps you're right this isn't real
Or not as real as it seems
I hope such thoughts sweeten somehow
Your present waking dreams

They say all through the wintertime
This cold Earth flirts with death
And spring she arrives to nourish
Whatever she finds left

And though I'm no big believer
Sometimes I can't help but pray
And now pray an unexpected spring
To you Leonard finds her way

There's a song playing in the Heavens
In aurora some see and hear
The angels dance and sing in a voice
That's too sweet for most human ear...

"Do not
Worry too much
When time comes
And takes its toll
The body
Is a cage now
Just a cage now
For the Soul

And pain is
Just a warning
Not to hurt your
Self so much today
The Whole's by
Your side always
Even death comes just
To take your pain away

We are
Watching above
For when it all
Gets too much
That day the
Heavens open
You come fly up
Here with us

And we have
All the music
Though like you we're
Not prone to gloat
In the elation
Of Creation
You will become
A secret note"

"Too weak to boogie, too healthy to die."

HB living legend.

Forever the last day of a summer.

May you, however, live long and yes prosper.

Great projects, yours.

Love!

P.s. its not a"poem". (Ey)

Since I first heard you on a well worn LP at boarding school at the end of the 60s I have loved your music, poetry and stage presence. Thank you for being a rock that I could always fall back upon when I perceived times were difficult. Loneliness never seemed to be such a problem when listening to your wonderful soul tearing songs. Thank you many times over and I regret that I never had the opportunity to see you live, on stage. May you live long and be happy.

Inexcusably late, still I want to extend these birthday greetings to Leonard, hoping your day was wonderful and that each one since has been and will be at least as good, if not better; for any rough days in between, I hope you are graced with a strong steady vessel.

I'm ever grateful for your words and music. Each revisit always feels welcome and leaves me less weary somehow. Thank you for creating and sharing such a space, and for your hospitality in it.

Also, as it is the time, I'd like to wish Leonard, and all those honouring it, a Blessed Yom Kippur - may you be sealed in the Book of Life.
