Marianne Ihlen, who was known for his relationship with the Norwegian author Axel Jensen and the Canadian writer and artist Leonard Cohen, passed away Thursday at Diakonhjemmet in Oslo after illness.

It says author Petter Mejlænder said.

He knew Ihlen well, after he wrote the biography of Axel Jensen.

In 2006 wrote Mejlænder also a portrait of Ihlen Aftenposten. It is worth reading in its entirety.

- She was an innocent, inexperienced and naive westside girl when she met Axel Jensen when she was around 20 years old. She was with Jensen to Hydra and became known overnight as the girlfriend of Axel. He was the Norwegian author all knew, says Mejlænder.

Ihlen moved to Greece with his high school sweetheart Axel Jensen in 1957. The following year they were married in Athens, and they had a son together.

- The relationship went overboard, and Marianne came into a difficult artist community on Hydra, says Mejlænder.

"So long Marianne"

Later, after Ihlen and Jensen divorced, she met Cohen on the island of Hydra. They lived on the island in the 60's. Cohen's poetry book "Flowers for Hitler" from 1964 is dedicated Marianne Ihlen, and the song "So long Marianne" is written about her.

- Leonard Cohen was a life for her, he was a great guy. It was a relationship that was important for Marianne. The conditions of Axel and Leonard were love affairs that characterized her further, he said.

Ihlen married with Jan Stang in 1979. In recent decades she lived in Oslo, where she worked with paintings, which were exhibited in several places.

Also Cohen website Cohencentric reviewing death. They report that they will come back with a tribute to Marianne Ihlen.

When I read the news, the light seemed less ... I lit a candle.
Such a loss of such grace.
Thoughts for everyone touched by such losss.
"You let me sing, you lifted me up, you gave my soul a beam to travel on. ... You gave the injury a tongue to heal itself."
Leonard Cohen in Book of Mercy (1984) Ch. 19.

it was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Marianne Ihlen - May she Rest In Peace.

We met when we were almost young
deep in the green lilac park.
You held on to me like I was a crucifix,
as we went kneeling through the dark.

I always wanted to be like Marianne, I even named my daughter after her name.
"We are sisters of heart, Maria", she said when we met in Oslo in March 2013.
What can I possible say about a woman that also changed my life?
'If you leave where will I keep you then?
In my heart, as some men say.
And I, who was born to love everyone,
Why should I keep you so far away?'
My love to Jan and his beloved daughters, to little Axel, to you all friends in Cohen
